De sa création par les Romains en tant qu'avant-poste commercial à son statut de mètre carré le plus cher du monde au XXIe siècle, le quartier d'affaires de Londres sobrement appelé « la City » est l'un des quartiers les plus anciens et les plus fascinants de la capitale britannique. Les gratte-ciels, tels que le Gherkin de Norman Foster, jouent des coudes avec les ruines romaines et des trésors d'architecture datant de toutes les périodes historiques, dont la cathédrale Saint-Paul et la Bank of England dessinée par John Soane. One of the lesser known Wren churches, rebuilt after the 1666 Great Fire of London, St Mary Abchurch has a dome which the great architect used as a trial for his plans for St Paul's Cathedral. The dome is not visible from the street - indeed, the exterior looks underwhlming - but inside it is unique. Grinling Gibbons carved fruit and flowers and a gilded pelican in piety on the reredos behind the altar. Other carvings, many by William Emmett, on the pulpit, the doorcases, the font cover and the Royal Arms on the organ gallery add to the richness of the interior.

I had the chance to take a photo of the back of the church. The photo of the rear facade impressed me a lot. Unfortunately, I couldn't see inside. You can smell many historical locations even just by walking around the streets of London.

Grilling Gibbons was a very gifted artist in carving Linden Lime tree wood.
You can see his work in St Paul’s cathedral and in other churches, in the V&A Museum, on street doorcases and in country houses.
But in this Wren church you feel you are back in the 17 th century. I hope the funds will be raised to restore the pale wood colour of his carvings on a Rederos panel behind the altar.
Covered now in varnish, this was originally a pale honey coloured contrast to the darker backdrop wooden screen behind the altar. A gilded pelican feeds her young as the centrepiece surrounded by bouquets and garlands of fruit and flowers carved exquisitely so as to be seen best from the perspective when you sit in front of it

A n interesting church tucked away off Cannon Street, the lovely Friends of City Churches have a fiiendly, helpful person on duty to help you get the most out of you visit. One useful tip, let your eyes get used to the fairly dark interior so you can enjoy the detail of the painting in the dome. Do read theor little booklet baout the chuech.

A church has existed on this site since the twelfth century, the present one replacing an earlier version destroyed in the Great Fire of London designed by ‘the office of Sir Christopher Wren’ and built beteeen 1681-6 rather than exclusively attributable to the great man himself. It was intended to be much larger and was severely damaged in the Blitz in 1940 although subsequently painstaking restored since. It has a spacious courtyard outside with a prominently sited coffee vendor.

We were on our way to St Pauls when we noticed this Church quite by accident and thought Let`s take a look, Re-built by Wren after the great fire it has an amazing painted domed ceiling, when we were there volunteers were on duty and very willing to tell us about the Church. If you are nearby it is well worth a visit

This church has a dome by Wren and is almost square. The dome was painted in 1708 and has the Hebrew work for God at its centre. There is no stained glass but there is carving by Grinling Gibbons which is apparently the only confirmed work by this carver in a City of London church.

Surrounded by office buildings, little natural light comes through the windows, couple that with the mainly dark wooden décor of the church means that St Mary’s is a church that underwhelms at first. I was lucky enough to visit when an organ recital was taking place, only four and a half people listening, the ‘half-person’ was reading the magazine This Week. Everyone sat by themselves, one of the attendees was a little old lady, I wonder how far she had come to listen to the organ music. Still I digress although the scene did hint at the small number of people who would attend religious services in the church.
The main reason for visiting St Mary’s is admire the ceiling, very impressive. If one is in the Cannon Street area it is well worth making the effort to visit this church when it is open.
