An interesting little oddity

It's small and compact and a little bit of hidden London. We had to make a special arrangement for the Bath to be opened up (it's a National Trust property). We felt special to have our own viewing. The Bath itself is rather in ruins but this is part of the charm, to see it as it was - just shut up and left.It was billed as a Roman baths to Victorians as an attraction but the truth is that is is far from Roman. In facts it's origins are not really known. When there you learn about the previous use of the baths and how it ended in the state it is in now. You can also read about it on the internet, but it's always good to see something historical in real life.

An odd curiosity

We visited as part of Open House weekend. I used to study at King's College, whose buildings surround the "Roman Bath" and often wondered what it looked like inside, but it was never open. So OH weekend was a perfect opportunity to find out more. What I discovered was that it is not Roman... It is said to date from 1776, or possibly the 1830s and was given its name as an advertising gimmick. It is featured in David Copperfield, which has added to its mystique and reputation. There were originally two cold plunge pools, although only one remains visible to the public. What was not clear to me is why anyone would want to visit such a place, let alone sit in cold water. But it is an interesting curiosity to spend 15 minutes visiting if in the area and if it is open!

Nothing much to see

Not easy to find, as the stairs by the sign to the bath are now gated and padlocked shut. You can still get on to Strand Place via the embankment though, and then you can walk up to the building that houses the bath. There's a small sign to indicate where it is and you can look in through a misty window. I couldn't really see anything of interest. Maybe there's more to be seen inside but this is only accessible by appointment. The best thing is probably the old sign telling you where it is.

Mi visita a Bath fue todo un sueño, a excepción de la lluvia y de que tomé demasiado tiempo, y una vez visto las termas romanas, la abadía y un jardín, poco más tenía que hacer sola allí (otra cosa será si vas con amigos).
Pero sin duda mereció la pena viajar hasta allí, y tocar ese agua que mana imparable y caliente y que después de tanto sigue llamando a bañarse. Llama la atención el estado de conservación de las piscinas, y pese a haber visto muchas termas, de momento nada igual. Maravilloso.

Not Roman and not a bath!!!

Great little find in London amongst the hustle and bustle of London life. Along Strand Lane and behind a window is a sunken brick tank that 19th century Londoners wanted to believe was a Roman bath. It is now thought that this was a cistern that fed water into an amazing fountain at Somerset house. There is a light switch which lets you peer inside. This "Roman batg" was mentioned by Charles Dickens in David Copperfield

It is as previous reviewers have attested to - slightly underwhelming. But take the time to pick up a history (or read the interpretation panels) and learn from Michael Trapp of King's College London. He's done a marvellous job of covering the facts and theories.

What is amazing is that this still exists. Revel in that fact, Romans or no Romans!

Quite apart from being Romanit was originally built as a cistern.You go down some steps and there on the left is a pool of uninviting water.Don't waste your time.

This is not easy to find but well worth while. Off Surrey Street near The Strand, it is not well signposted if you weren't aware of its location.
It is open from 10:30 am on weekdays for only 90 minutes. If you arrive and it is closed, there is an outdoor switch adjacent to the curved window that illuminates the inside.
The bath is about 4 metres long and just under two metres wide. That it is still fed from a spring and replenishes the bath every day was interesting. Also that it has been incorporated in a house and alleged to have been used continuously since Roman times.
Entry is free and operated by The National Trust.

Finally able to access the alley and look through window at bath, one of London's curiosities. Old watch house is also worth seeing.

A curiosity and slightly disappointing

These Roman Baths are tucked away near Somerset House and quite difficult to find. Run by the National Trust and not generally open to the public, the small Baths can be viewed through an exterior window. The site is not very well lit and the windows were misty when I visited but it's an interesting aspect of Old London - finding the Baths is half of the fun!!
