It's easily to dismiss King Street as just another street but there is an incredible range of architecture through the ages to be found along it. We've walked the full length on several occasions during our recent visit to Norwich and it felt perfectly safe late in the evening. In fact, we saw no evidence of any nefarious activities at any time of day. It's interesting to note that there were once 58 pubs in King Street but now there is only one - aptly named the Last Pub Standing.
We've rarely encountered such a diverse range of architecture along a single road before. There are private dwellings from the 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st centuries juxtaposed with those dating from the medieval period. Some of these - such as the city walls, Dragon Hall, the Music House, - are covered in more detail elsewhere on Trip Advisor so I won't repeat but it is worth saying that King's Street is definitely worth a walk along for anyone interested in history particularly architectural history.

The street as others have said has a chequred and interesting past with plenty of placques and information for you to read. It looks a bit neglected in areas which is sad as the old timbered buildings are lovely to look at.

King St in Norwich has had a chequered history but the negative reviews about it are now completely outdated. It is one of the most famous streets in Norwich, filled with wonderful medieval and georgian architecture and is situated in the historic Tombland area walking distance to both the cathedral and castle. The road is partly closed to traffic, houses the National Centre for writing at the 14c Dragon Hall, the Kings conference centre and a multitude of cafes, hairdressers and smart offices for law firms and architects. Across a pedestrian footbridge (over the river) is the Riverside area with a cinema, bowling alley, bars and restaurants, supermarkets and shops. The regeneration of King Street has been a long time coming so please don't be put off by the very dated reviews here - King Street is now fabulous.

The first item I posted in 2012 is very out of date now.
I have tried to edit it but the original post keeps coming up.
It is no longer a drive through, there is no longer the great prostitution and drug problem, and the Ferry Boat Public House where Steve Wright the Suffolk strangler worked is closed.
There is still the old Dragon Hall, well worth a visit.
The old building where the Anchorite Nun , Mother Julian lived as a hermit for years, is still to be seen.
I have asked for my earlier review to have the reference to prostitution and drugs to be removed. The police now spend time clearing up Ber Street, not far from King Street, with some success. If you are a kerb crawler, don’t be in Ber Street, you will be caught.

Just wandering down from the Rouen Road car park to a ministers lunch at Kings Church, my wife and I were impressed with the beauty of the buildings along King Street. The roof lines, the timbering, the angles. This was the red light district a few decades ago, but one suspects there is a lot more history than that to these beautiful buildings.

I thought the whole street would look like the famous pictures but its actually only a small part. Just a few old buildings. Still worth a visit.

A regeneration project is currently occurring with king street so in the next few years is should be as good as it once was.

When I last wrote about King Street in Norwich I gave an honest report on my experience there, having worked in the locality for over 35 years.
Unfortunately the review upset some people which was not my intention. For this I apologise.
While most of the historical facts in the original review are true and a matter of local history, I acknowledge there have been major changes in the road layout, and that most of the sex trade has been moved to other roads which I am not going to name, but are close to the area.
It is still possible to visit the lovely Dragon Hall by arrangement with the new owners after the Norwich Writers Association took it over from the previous Norwich Heritage Trust. It is still worth a visit if you are in the area, parking available at the side and rear.
Mother Julian, Anchorite Nun of Norwich, still has a memorial there.
If you had not been told, you would never know King Street was once famous for the large brewery that stood there for many years. Also for one of the largest youth and boxing clubs in the City.
Being close to the City centre King Street is well worth a visit if only to see the redevelopment of the area, and the afore mentioned Dragon Hall. I spoke with some older residents who well remember the old vice ridden area, and who now enjoy life there much more as a result of closure of the road which stopped the kerb crawlers.
I hope this review is helpful. And yes, in answer to critics, there are other interesting places in Norwich to be explored other than King Street. Why not go on one of the popular guided tours of Norwich, where experienced Norwich guides will help you enjoy the other parts of the City, Elm Hill comes to mind. Be wary of car parking if disabled, your blue badge is not recognised in City car parks. There is a car park at the Princes Street end of Elm Hill, the Monastery car park, rather heavily used by workers, more accessible at weekends.
From there it is a short walk to Elm Hill and King Street. If you are in a wheelchair, remember Elm Hill is a cobbled street with narrow pavements, but well worth a visit.
