The main spire of Oxford is located at Nuffield College, great views of it from the castle mount across the road, this is one of many college buildings around the city each of them worth a wander around to admire the architecture and if possible the internal gardens or quadrangle.

I was in Oxford during its 2018 Heritage Open Days weekend and stumbled across a poster outside its New Road entrance advertising entry to Nuffield College albeit from its gate in Worcester Street around the corner. Visitors were directed first to the chapel on the second floor of a building to the right in the first quad. This involved ascending a staircase past rather unremarkable print dawdles by Bruce MacLean before passing four characteristically charismatic prints of churches and castles by John Piper. Entirely fitting as it was he who had designed the stained glass windows, and possibly some ironwork directly behind a he altar in the quite unique chapel itself. Next I queued for an art tour I had not, as requested, pre-booked but was allowed to join as no-one checked names least of all the erudite college fellow who was our guide. We were taken to a remarkably plain dining room built of Cotswold stone bereft of the usual oil paintings of masters and alumni, who are, instead, depicted in drawings in the entrance by the likes of William Rothenstein and Elizabeth Frink (a poor likeness said out guide). On a table was a selection of silverware either won or collected by William Morris who as Lord Nuffield was the college’s founder: cups for winning cycling and motorcycling races respectively; a model bus given to him by local solicitors for breaking a strike in 1913; a casket when he was awarded the freedom of the City of Oxford. But the best artworks were yet to be seen, principally in the first floor SCR overlooking the hall, displaying a huge Ivon Hitchens landscape and an early Patrick Heron both dating from the hall’s opening in 1958. Next door in a retiring room were two long friezes by John Cracton in mismatching but contemporaneous frames; a silly photographic self-portrait of a levitating Sam Taylor-Wood (sadly not nude) holding two balloons. About the three Howard Hodgkin prints (two small Indian views and a multi-coloured cake) no remark was made at all.

I am at present in my second day at this marvelus hospital having yestaday had a complete left hip replacement. To say I have been dreading this operation since receiving the letter telling me of the 18th June being my admission date would be an understament. But now in my second day having had the operation and now converlesing all my fears were unfounded. The hospital, my surgeon Mr Simon Newman, his team, the anethiest team, the nursing staff were absolutely excellent as also were all the other staff not mentioned.

Founded by Lord Nuffield who was the William Morris of Morris Motors and MG (Morris Garages) fame. He chose the village of Nuffield near Henley both for his latter-day home (as Nuffield Place) and his title after he became a Viscount. The home was recently under threat but the National Trust amongst others has stepped in to save it. The college seems to do pretty well but has rather chosen to dis-own its founder of late even though he also gave his Nuffield Place home to the college as part of his estate.

Morris gave money freely and easily to a variety of health and educational causes within his own lifetime and this college built at the terminus point of the original Oxford Canal is just one of his legacies. (See also, for example, his contributions to the success of the Oxford Nuffield Orthopaedic Hospital). The college is built to a traditional formal layout and executed in smooth simple block-like structures largely devoid of external decoration.

This college is a fittingly big tribute to his efforts that for better or worse changed Oxford from a sleepy university town into a city that along with the other great motor industry locations, Coventry and Luton. actually prospered during the inter-war period.

Curiously little about Morris in Oxford - see the Museum of Oxford and there is a semi-permanent display of Oxford-built Morris cars and memorabilia at the Oxford Bus Museum, near Bladon, Woodstock, Oxon. Part of his motor empire survives in Oxford where the former Pressed Steel car body plant is now home to the BMW Mini car production site (and a separate attraction in its own right).

A relatively modern institution being established in 1937 following a donation by Lord Nuffield the founder of Morris Motors.

A graduate only, it is one of the smallest of the constituent colleges and hence one of the wealthiest per student in the world.

A reflection of its progressive outlook is that it has been coeducational since its foundation.

We are staying in a hotel not 3 mins walk from this college. It welcomes visitors without advertising this. We had a quick look around the grounds which are splendid. Opposite Oxford Castle and Prison which is a Oxford attraction. Free. Won’t see too much but it’s another college

We were walking around during Open Days in June and stumbled on Nuffield College. The grounds were so beautiful, I had to take a few pics. Near the Castle, Nuffield is in a cool part of Oxford.

Founded in 1937 and with a large and tall block style tower, Nuffield is a more modern looking college that specialises in economics, politics and sociology. The public are allowed free access to the quad, which I must say is very peaceful and relaxing.

Situated across the Road from the Castle you cant miss this college as it has a huge tower standing proud above the surrounding buildings. For some time out, and piece walk into the gardens, although small, compared to other colleges, they are very well kept and truly peaceful.
