Lovely old pub in Oxford. Good selection of beers on tap and always friendly staff and clientele alike. Full of character inside !

This place appeared on our route while visiting Oxford - it looked original and inviting, so we went in for a quick coffee, but we decided to stay longer, drinking a few pints of good ales and ciders.
A really nice place with a very original collection of hundreds of cut pieces of ties, from various places around the world. Looking at the dates, this collection was started over half a century ago!

Oxford's oldest pub est. 1242 with a lovely outdoor seating area. A Fuller's pub with a great selection of drinks.
Didn't eat here so can't comment on the food.

There was no room at The Ivy but luckily by chance we noticed a pub down a nearby side street.
It was The Bear.
With the name of my favourite animal, we just had to visit.
It was surprisingly small inside and a bit of a shame that the albeit friendly bar lady didn’t tell there was a large marquee and outside seating around the back.
We almost missed a delicious lunch.
Anyway we found a table outside rather than than in the quite noisy marquee where a sports game was being shown on the television.
No printed menu but a quick scan of the Q code on the table opened a very easy to use online ordering system.
After an awful online experience ordering elsewhere, I was sceptical but this was just so easy to use and probably a lot quicker than ordering at the bar.
Drinks arrived promptly, food took over half an hour but they were busy and after a while the waitress came out to say one our choices was sadly not available.
My partner and I both ended up having the chicken and ham pie.
I must say it looked a lot smaller than I was expecting and could have done with a touch more filling, especially for the price of £15.50
Definitely not bear sized but on reflection actually probably just about right for lunch.
However it was amazingly delicious and came with a portion of mash and shredded cabbage. Plus the most delicious gravy in a jug on the side. So delicious in fact that I didn’t leave a drop and drank the remains directly out of the jug - bear like.
We didn’t stay for dessert as we had lots to do and thought we may have to wait a while. Maybe next time.
After reading back what I have written, please don’t get the wrong impression.
We loved the place and liked the friendly staff.
Being hidden away off the main tourist drag it was not touristy and seemed to have a local clientele and was all the better for it.
Thoroughly recommend it for a long leisurely lunch or dinner.
We will be back.

Lovely staff and friendly helpful staff. Prices are the big downside. Worth a visit but expensive. It seems that like most of the pubs and restaurants they are charging very high prices for what they are which is a shame.

Babi che adolescente lo era qualche anno fa vive ad Oxford dove siamo andati a trovarla. Ci ha portato in questi pub mentre pioveva e faceva abbastanza freddo. Entri e sei avvolto nel legno, no, guarda meglio! Sulle pareti una miriade di pezzi di cravatta in bacheca grosse addirittura attaccare al soffitto. Ogni punta una laurea di uno studente. Sono decine di anni che tagliano cravatte qui!!! Birra rissa concordata con il proprietario dopo averne assaggiate più di una. Poi qualcosa da mettere in bocca. Un piatto vegetariano e polpette di carne ripiene e i due caminetti a legna che bruciavano piano piano? Roba di altri tempi. Andateci!!

This place is so lovely, you won’t forget it. It’s tiny, but there is super friendly staff who shuffle nice dishes to your tiny place to sit. It’s so tiny that necessarily you make British and other friends right around you. Lovely do go!

This is one of Oxford's must visit historic pubs. The interior consists of two small rooms and there is also some outside seating. It is noted for its collection of tie snippets some of which were apparently not so willingly donated. It is very characterful, the beer was good, well worth a visit.

Definitely a place to visit when you are in Oxford. Small and atmospheric pub with a friendly staff.
The only objection during my last visit was the very bad smell that was coming out of the gents toilet, which made sitting to the nearby seats impossible (we actually had to switch and move as further away as we could).

I came back to the Bear after 30 years. The standards have not changed. The staff are friendly, the food quick and by far the best fish and chips I have tasted in a very, very long time. Congrats to all and don't change a thing. It IS the oldest pub in Oxford for a reason.
