This is a lovely building dating from the 14th century and has a fascinating history. One of the volunteer guides gave a brief explanatory talk and told us that until 16th/17th century the building would have had open fires and no chimney. You can still smell the smoke in the upper room!
Twin military brothers lived in the house last century and their influence on the building is told well by the guide and contents of the house. This helps bring it to life.
I really enjoyed this visit; actually it is much more interesting than the Guildhall across the road

Well worth a visit. A knowledgeable guide tells you about the history of the 14 century house, who has lived there and about the furniture. Very pretty small garden at the rear is well worth visiting.

There is a small shop as well

A warm welcome was received from the lady in the south wing which had the gift shop and entrance.
The house was interesting and it was possible to see how it had evolved over time . The house was furnished with numerous items and belongings collected by the owners from their extensive travel around the world in the late nineteenth and twentieth century..
Only negative point was the volunteer person who was on duty in the dining room on the day of my visit.
I was visiting as a solo and the lady was in conversation with a couple when l entered the room and when finished the lady ignored me and started a conversation with a couple who entered the room about 3 minutes after me . Bad manners.
Left a poor impression.

On entering we were given a short overview of the history of the house by one of the staff (volunteers?).

Dating back to the 14th century, the house mainly contains art & objects collected by the brothers who restored around 100 years ago.

After the death of the brothers, the house was given in trust to a London art college, of real interest was a collection of wage packets from a housemaid who worked at the house for over 10yrs during that period. Each has a hand-drawn illustration by the warden.

Brilliant. Well worth visiting. A really interesting place. We were welcomed with a free face to face introduction by a very knowledgeable guide. Then we could walk around the hall at our leisure. The Hall has a fascinating history dating back well over 500 years. There are a really large number of excellent exhibits, all signposted and explained.

The Little Hall in Lavenham is a minutes walk away from the famous Guildhall in the Market Square. It is run by volunteers and is both an incredible old building and an eclectic mix of curious from the Middle East, collected by two brothers before the decline of the Empire.
We had a passionate introduction to the building and its history from one of the volunteer ladies and were then free to explore on our own.
The rooms are generally small but they have plenty of items in them and a board in each room details the history, if known. The house itself shouldn't be neglected as over it's life it went from a prosperous merchant home to being split into 6 dwellings for the poor and then finally being united in a single home again in the 1920's.
There is a pretty garden at the back too and a small knot garden. I'm not sure on the colouring of the building exterior but it does stand out!

I love historical buildings. In South Wales we have the amazing St. Fagans and I have visited many times when my daughter was a child and I think it is a well presented site. Little Hall while one small historical site was absolutely outstanding! An entry fee of £4.50 ( £5.00) if you wanted to make a donation was outstanding. I was mesmerised from the time I entered. I am ashamed to say I didn’t note the name of the gentleman who was a volunteer and gave both myself and other visitors an entertaining and informative history of the building. It was perfectly timed, informative and funny. It wasn’t compulsory everyone was free to wander around if they preferred. I have visited many historical buildings but the story of the twin brothers who made this building their home was interesting and heart wrenching in some ways. I really enjoyed this little piece of England it was worth three times the price I paid for the privilege of visiting

Gorgeous house to visit in Lavenham. Very knowledgeable guides, all of whom seem to be locals. Lovely rooms to browse with artefacts, books, historical records and pictures. A definite must if passing through. Lovely gardens too.

By far and away more interesting than the Guildhall. Limited opening. Allow at least an hour, lots to see. Also excellent and well informed staff
