Really interesting and unusual for a town centre location, garden history about 'everyday folk' rather than the usual Lords and Ladies. Run largely by volunteers and a charity, the gardens also host community events and festivals. Quite a small site so easy to get around if reasonably able-bodied. On site cafe facilities.

Hidden away on the edge of Warwick is this, the last example in England of detached gardens. In Victorian times these gave craftsmen green spaces in which to relax or market garden. Earmarked for development, they were saved by public appeal and are now managed as a trust by volunteers. Each garden is different, but many retain their original summerhouses. It’s a lovely place to while away an hour or so. Some are slightly overgrown, but gardeners will find a lot to interest them. RHS members gain free entrance. Coffee shop, flower sale, toilets, nearby car park.

We have visited these gardens twice in the past, our last visit was just before Covid
The gardens were a delight, however on our visit on 4 Aug 24 we were very disappointed. Most of the gardens were poorly kept, overgrown with weeds and looked very unloved. The £6 charge is not worth it.

Lovely peaceful gardens, and fascinating to learn something of the people who cultivated them over the years, in some cases keeping pigs as well ( no pigs today!) and quite elaborate summerhouses, some with a fireplace. The gardens were rented or bought mostly by shopkeepers in Warwick who had no space by their houses. The gardens were varied and, a bonus, there were interesting plants for sale. The volunteers were helpful and friendly. Wish I lived nearer, I would go more often. So good these have been preserved and not built over.

Sunday 8th October 2023, My husband and I awoke to a lovely warm and sunny day. We picked up our friend Susan in the car to go to the Apply Day & Country Fair at Hill Close Gardens in Warwick. We went here in 2022, and it was a fabulous day out, so we decided to come again this year.

Hill Close Gardens are rare survivors of Victorian detached gardens (once found in many urban areas) used by townsfolk who lived about their businesses in the town centre and had nowhere to grow flowers, fruit or vegetables in their small backyards.

In the early 1990’s, a local resident alerted the neighbourhood that diggers were moving in and that was the start of the rescue of Hill Close Gardens, with one of the deciding factors being the designations of four summer houses as Grade 2 listed buildings. The site was then listed later that year and preserved for the nation.

We arrived and parked our car in the pay & display car park. We then entered the gardens and looked at all the lovely country fair stalls. There were arts and crafts, food and drinks, wrought iron ware, natural beauty products, and displays of weaving and spinning as well as growing and cultivating apple trees.

My husband purchased a pot of honey from a local bee keeper. Susan purchased some hand-made cards and a picture of a black cat which reminded her of her old cat ‘Minnie’. We also purchased apples which had grown in the gardens, these were lovely old fashion varieties with wonderful smells and delicious to eat.

After wandering around the stalls, my husband, Susan and I then strolled around these lovely gardens with their lovely old fashioned plants and herbs with wonderful old fashioned apple and pear trees.

This year there was music in the gardens. There was a lovely ‘Jazz Band’, which played for two hours and was a pleasure to sit and listen too. There was also ‘Tibetan’ Gong music, which was amazing and spoke to your soul. It inspired me to write a poem called ‘Warrior of Light’.

We took loads of lovely photographs as we walked round and rested in the summer houses and on benches overlooking the gardens.

We had a wonderful day and hope this lovely day will happen in 2024.

I wish I'd taken photos this time, my second visit. We went as two couples and treated ourselves to the cream tea. Beautiful scones, just the right amount of jam and cream. Served up by the lovely May. Everyone of the volunteers I've met here are lovely, so enthusiastic about this gem of victorian life. They've fought hard to keep the gardens from being developed and preserved some insightful history. A fabulous variety of fruit, vegetables and flowers, with most gardens having a brick summerhouse. I wish I lived a little closer to be able to volunteer myself. Please visit for yourselves and enjoy a peaceful glimpse into the past.
