A totally unknown path, I'm glad I followed. A two floor tribute which cements a rich contribution to 20th century Scottish art.
Oils, watercolour, pastels, ink- a multi-medium master. Stunning still life and family portraits. His home city of Edinburgh is another star of the show but love of rural Scotland and its folk takes us from pretty Plockton down to the Borders' abbeys ( minus the tourists )
Wartime artworks capture some of his experiences in the Royal Engineers. A revelation.
Much of the exhibition is on loan from private collections so visit before October 6th to fully appreciate the full scale of his achievements- no traffic jams whatsoever.
XXL thanks to curators and as always to the helpful ,friendly staff on entrance and in the galleries.

Lunch today Friday 26th Jan the soup ' Mushroom and Tarragon ' did not taste of either, too thick, not liquid, almost the consistency of porridge. Also it was cold when served. We did see another table served later with soup and that soup did look hot.
Awful experience.

Third visit to this great Art Gallery Such an interesting venue with various exhibitions on display. The landscape exhibition currently on display was especially good, some fab work. Staff are always warm and friendly and the place extremely clean, warm and inviting. I'm sure it won't be our last visit and I would definitely recommend a visit x

The city art center along with national museum were the highlights of my stay in Edinburgh. Art center had special exhibit of Peter Howson.
Although it’s not allowed, I snuck a couple of photos.

A really nice collection of photographs and other works of art

The current exhibition of photographs by early female photographers in Scotland is a great document of a point in the history of these lands

Two floors of this stunning space are showcasing over 300 rarely seen treasures of the once famous Scottish Modern Arts Association.
The Greats like Hornel, Peploe , Cadell and Fergusson feature. Edinburgh born Mary Cameron was unknown to me but her Spanish influenced 'Les Joyeurs' is 'fenomenal'. Newbery's 'Daydreams' is a lady in green dream and to view a Keppie (Yes, that famous architect) Cairo scene (with no litter) was pure magic. There's just tons of tone ! Info on individual artists and history of collection is tops.
Don't miss the New Acquisitions downstairs including a Paolozzi toad.
Wonderful Artspace with exhibition linked kids' activities. No photos due to copyright restrictions .
XXL thanks to curators , to staff on all floors and to Alistair at front desk for perfect intro to the galleries.
Exhibition runs until 16th October so totally chuffed to be able to plan a return visit and enjoy it all again.

I dearly wish that the Edinburgh City Art put on a Celtic Revival Exhibition, especially a retrospective on John Duncan, one of Edinburgh's greatest artists.

There's three or four of John Duncan's paintings in the City Arts Centre. He brings such beautiful colour and detail to the canvas to bring a wonderful portrayal of Celtic folklore. You can see he was influenced by the pre-Raphaelites especially Rossetti and Italian art frescos.

The arts centre has the superb Tristan & Isolde the classic mythical Romeo & Juliet tale of forlorn love. They hold the love potion that will make them love each other for eternity, but it was not to be, Isolde is betrothed to King Mark of Cornwall. Tristan is taking Isolde on a ship from Ireland to Cornwall for her wedding. Their tale more or less ends like Romeo & Juliet.

Go across to the Scottish National Gallery and see Duncan's magnificent Saint Bride. At first glance I did not see Saint Bride, I just was mesmerised by the two angels. The designs on their cloaks details Christ's story. Wonderful.

We were impressed when we were greeted by a member of staff who explained the layout of the venue and told us about the current exhibition. The guides on each floor were friendly and happy to chat about the art work and history of the centre.
The Art Centre is large and mostly well laid out. Unfortunately, one or two pieces were on walls where they could not be viewed at a distance, despite this being a fairly obvious need for the piece. There were plenty traditional, impressionist pieces and well known Scottish artists from the last century were well represented. We would have enjoyed a better selection of modern pieces and were left fairly uninspired by the majority of the most recent art works on display with few examples of the various genres that have been popular, in more recent decades.
There was a small selection of sculptures on display. Most of which were busts. It would have been great to see some interesting pieces in the middle of the rooms. Even some cabinets with small art works and ceramics, metal work etc along with one or two walls with a collage of art works would have given more variety and stimulation to an otherwise, fairly uninspiring layout.
Of most disappointment to us was the lack of information given for individual art work. Despite there being a reasonably sized description card beside most works, this was mainly given over to the history of the gallery and its acquisition of work. This could have been displayed separately in the lifts, stairs and entrances to each gallery area, perhaps. On the cards that did give some information, it was minimal, despite more information being readily available on line for many of the artists.
It was a blessing that the main galleries were free of charge. There was also an exhibition of one artists’ art work at minimal cost. Unfortunately, we ran out of time to visit the exhibition but found the advertising material did not give a clear image of the exhibitions content anyway.
We had refreshments in the cafe. They displayed a lovely selection of cake in the pretty surroundings. Although we ordered our choices at the counter, our order was delivered to our table. The cafe was well staffed and organised with prompt service.
We would certainly give this centre “another go” and make a return visit, but if it remains as it was on the day we visited, we would be unlikely to return for a third time.
The Gallery is disabled friendly with easily accessible lifts on each floor. We did not find that it embraced young visitors except a few small items being sold in the shop. It would be very useful to provide interactive viewing for children and young adults. Perhaps some drawings of art works that primary school children could colour in to match the paintings or as they would like them to look. There could be some sort of quiz etc geared for age groups that introduce them to the various genres of paintings and the various artists. A generic one for all older youths and adult groups might provide a way of introducing novice adults to the world of paintings and to a lesser extent, sculpture.
We do hope that those managing this gallery will review their approach and become a more modern and interesting experience for visitors. The foundations of an excellent gallery are in place, with a large art work collection, fantastic venue, eager staff and a nice shop and cafe.
