Walking from Craignure to Torosay and Duart
The old railway track is a good walking route from Craignure to Torosay. Turn right at the memorial plaque and follow the ditch for a few minutes - the track will soon come into view. The castle and gardens are clearly not the attraction they once were, but from Torosay it's a stunning walk along the shoreline to Duart Castle with a just couple of obstacles (gate to climb, stream to cross). It's best to join the road before entering the wooded area.

Disappointing visit
juin 2014 • En couple
During a two day stay in Craignure we took a walk to Torosay Castle. We planned to follow the old railway track but failed to find the path at the memorial plaque. We were directed to the path at the estate entrance and followed the track through the forest to the house, a delightful walk just over one mile. We were informed by a Frenchman working at the house that the gardens are only open on the first Sunday of the month and the house is not open to the public at any time. It was bought with Swiss money and it is now a French charity. We were allowed through the gate to take a picture of the house and continued our walk through the estate to the Guthrie memorial cross and a wonderful view south to Duart castle. We found the end of the railway line and followed the track back to the memorial. The last bit is a bog walk where the track was removed a few years ago. Disappointment at the castle but a rewarding walk.

Abbiamo visitato solo i giardini, stupendi! Comodi da raggiungere, vicini all'imbarco del Ferry. Atmosfera da sogno

Very lovely!

The castle is currently up for sale so the rooms we were allowed to view were empty and therefore a lot of imagination was required on our part but that didn't hinder our visit.

The castle gardens are beautiful and definitely worth a stroll.

Bearing in mind the emptiness of the castle at the moment, we did think the entrance fee was a little high

Castle is closed ! Only Gardens Are Open
mai 2012 • En couple
The castle appears to be permanently closed and is up for sale I believe.
You can look round the gardens but at £5.50 pp this seemed too expensive so we left !

Grand house, gardens... and welcome
We visited Torosay last week, and it was an interesting house and garden to look around -- especially for those into horticulture. A private function was going on in the castle, and many things were closed, but the ladies in the tearoom took pity on us as we'd spent so long there. They brought us out some coffee and cake... even though they weren't supposed to... and we enjoyed these things while chaffinches skipped around our table picking up crumbs. My two year old son was delighted. Also, there was a small but good playpark at the edge of the garden. Again, a boon for those with small kids.

Torosay - say no
Have been put off before we go! phoned to get information as pllanning trip with wheelchair bound mother and spoke to a very rude gentleman who was only interested in the fact that they were selling the castle and didn't have time for anything else!

From reading the other reviews this is obviously where the staff attitude stems from and i ma afraid i would not put money into their pockets!

Different and Unusual
I love history and visit a lot of castles and I liked Torosay for the fact that it was different. There is a strong family atmosphere and a very friendly approach here - you are invited to sit down and enjoy the rooms rather than told to keep off the furniture. The Victorian-ness of the whole place is almost over-whelming but fascinating and all the snippets of family history are different and unusual. The only criticism I have is that I liked it so much I would have liked to see more of the castle interior, not just the ground floor.

The gardens are stunning. We had our lunch here (the dog was allowed to come into the gardens and we sat outside, which was very welcome) and the food was outstanding. It was a very interesting, welcoming and unusual place.
