Having been on the Shannon for more than 30 years we had a family reunion again on these magnificent waterways. Once more we rented from Sliver Line their Silver Breeze, the largest hire boat on the river and for sure also the most comfortable one. As always, the boat was in magnificent condition. This family owned business takes personal care of their customers and also their boats, which are in immaculate condition.
Although the weather was unfortunately not favorable we had once more a fantastic and memorable family-time on the river. Thank you, Barbara, Innes and the Silver Line crew, we were accommodated well.

First time at the helm of a cruiser but already looking forward to booking our next weekend trip with Carrickcraft. We only had 15 mins to travel from Birr to Banagher to set sail and cruising on the Shannon was always on our bucket list! Wendy in reservations was super helpful as were the team on arrival at Banagher Noel & Mick. Stopped off at great spots like Shannonbridge to dine in the Organic Kitchen at Fallon's Pub then onto Athlone for the craic and more fab food sunday at Grogan's in the village of Glasson. Everyone had a turn at the helm and helping to moor the cruiser. So much better than staying in the overpriced hotels of Ireland and Dolly our dog had a blast too!

From start to finish they deliver a professional and friendly service.
Barbara, Inis & Naomi are front of house and nothing is ever too much trouble.
The silverline crew will always speak to you.
Boat was clean and tidy on picking her up. We had the silver spray class.and loved it.
The whole experience makes you want to come back again. In fact we will be be back in May.&. August.

August 2023 - boat holiday on River Shannon - hire company Carrickcraft. We hired the Tyrone class boat - compact but a good size for a couple. If you want to do something different rather than standard beach holiday - then this might be for you. Very peaceful, relaxing and interesting way to travel down the river - a totally different perspective on life. There are lots of places to stop and moor up - wildlife to see, castles, monuments etc to see. A number of places along the way to eat at. We started at Banagher and went down and around Lough Derg and back up to Banagher. Check the opening times of Portumna Bridge (about 2.5 hours south of Banagher) has to open for all boats excepts really low canoe type boats. Make sure to plan your day in advance and don’t be too optimistic with distance. The Tyrone Class is easy to drive and manoeuvre, park and take through the locks. You get a good view by driving standing up with the roof retracted. Try and keep about 1800-2000 rpm as above this it can be noisy and burn a lot of diesel. The shower is compact but powerful. The seating area, fridge, cooker, kitchenette are all perfectly functional and satisfactory. A little bit of condensation does build up at night but just keep the little windows open to mitigate this. The bed is a reasonable size but is quite hard and not that comfortable. The area around Portumna bridge is good for pike fishing - other course fish can be caught in Lough Derg by trawling behind the boat with the boat at low speed. I found the Carrickcraft staff quick to respond and although we had a slight problem with our water pump they were prompt at rectifying the issue. One thing that did stand out was how helpful folks were all the way down and in harbours where they would come out quickly and grab the ropes to make mooring so much easier. We had good weather most of the way except one day were things got a bit choppy (and scary) on Lough Derg - not Carrickcraft’s fault. Top tips - look at the weather forecast and if caught out on choppy waters steer at 45 degrees to the waves and ‘zigzag’ to your destination - avoid being ‘side-on’ to the waves! Overall I would definitely recommend a holiday of this type - 5-7 days is good. 😀

Ho avuto modo di ammirarlo dalla cittadina di LImerik, fiume molto bello e panoramico. Assolutamente da vedere se vi recate da queste parti.

We visited the River Shannon as a group of adults and hired a boat from Silverline in Banagher. (We have had very many similar holidays elsewhere.)
Silverline were not as organised and communicative as we would like but it all 'worked' in the end. Service was far too slow but they were friendly, helpful and effective. The boat was rather poorly supplied with consumables (dishcloths, rubbish bags and the like). The bedding was particularly poor quality. In general although entirely serviceable and adequate, the boat looked a little 'tired'
Our trip was marred by poor weather - it hardly stopped raining. But we were disappointed by the lack of wildlife and the limited opportunities to tie up and explore the 'shore'. (This is a river with marshy edges unlike a canal with hard edges and usually a towpath. ) Hiring bikes was a total waste. Would be an excellent location for anglers

Recently returned from a “staycation” on the river Shannon that we probably would never have done only for current restrictions. However I would recommend this holiday to everybody. Maybe not for families with young kids but definitely one for families with teenagers. It’s an all action / relaxing holiday all in one. You will love the thrill of captaining your own boat, which cater for every size family / group. Plan you own trip / schedule up or down the river from several starting/ finishing marinas. Call into the many towns and villages along the way and enjoy the food and drink on offer. You can even bring / hire your own bicycles/canoes and explore further. We went with the CarrickCraft company which I could highly recommend but there are several others to choose from.

We spent 4 lovely nights on the Silver Shadow from Banagher to Lough ree and back. I would really recommend then silver shadow as it is a luxury cruiser with 2 bathrooms. Plenty of room for 2 couples, I think it would be cramped with 6. The fly bridge/cover is fantastic as keeps you dry and out of the wind. We stopped in Shannon Bridge, Hodsun Bay, Le Carrow, Athlone, Wineport Lodge and Killinure Chalets. We would all definitely recommend!

First time boat renters, 2 couples for 1 week on a boat rented via Shannon River.com from Banagher. Booking was very easy. As novices we needed the very helpful Brian to advise us of the advantages of various boats and itineries etc. Using an agency like his meant we got an overview of all the companies without any extra expense. I would definitely recommend a chat with him before booking.
We ended up with a Kilkenny class cruiser from Carrickcraft. The boat was perfect for 2 couples as it had 2 rooms and 2 loos. It was absolutely spotless eventhough it was an old boat. The sheets and towels were pristine as was the upholstery etc. The staff were lovely and we had no mechanical issues at all. The only fault was a leaky skylight and loo window. There were no hidden costs (we paid all inclusive add on of €350 ish which included insurance waiver which brought excess down to €100 and covered all diesel, cleaning and shower card....well worth it)
Overall we had a great week despite very dodgy weather. People on the river were incredibly helpful, friendly and interesting, as one man said, it's like a linear village. So true.

How many nights did you rent your boat ?
We are looking at 4 nights and wondered if there was enought to visit going North out of Banagher ?
Thanks so much for posting the info !

Hi Vince, we rented for 3 nights. There are many more places to visit going north of Banagher. My advice would be once you have your dates decided check out the online guides for what is going on over that period. Regards, Marcus

I'm looking for a small charter that sails this river. My mom n I are traveling there in Aug. looking for a one day cruise that would take us from the Shannon arirport area towards, possibly, the Tarbert area. Is this possible??

We (2 couples) are chartering from LeBoat in May for 10 days and cruising from Carrick-On-Shannon south to Portumna. We are experienced boaters but this is our first adventure in Ireland. Would appreciate advice on what ports are "must-stays" and which to pass by. And any other local knowledge on what to see and do along the way. Thank you!

My husband and I visited Ireland 2 years ago. We rented a car and stayed in B&Bs in villages, avoiding the cities. It was grand and we want to return. A friend suggested renting a boat and cruising the Shannon River stopping in little towns along the shore to visit sights, dine and go to pubs. Is this feasible and is boating the Shannon difficult?
