One of Peterborough's first and most important industrial sites now being returned to nature by a band of enthusiastic volunteers. Some interesting old industrial relicts preserved outside, and some good railway and environmental exhibitions inside.
An interesting and inspiring visit for all ages.

We think this place is very good, very friendly volunteers gave us great information, took us around the site and made the impression they are all very knowledgeable about railways, rail stock and the area itself. Great viewing platform for the live train tracks coming in and out of Peterbrough. We spent about 2 hours here altogether taking pictures, walking the nature area, looking at the red kites and chatting to all the volunteers. The snacks and drinks on sale are very reasonably priced if you're taking young kids or just want a coffee. Clean toilets and the bridge over the river gave us lovely views of the rowers on the river and the green Victorian iron bridge and viaduct.
Thanks to the volunteers for all their hard work. The model railways are lovely and the minature railway looks like a lot of hard work has gone into it.
Well done

Railworld is a fantastic place to visit if you love trains! Not only do they have an amazing, recently extended garden railway, they also have great indoor model railways too. One of them being a Thomas themed railway. On top of that you can see regular trains passing by on the mainline and lots of railway memorabilia around the beautiful site. It is also a lovely place to experience nature and is scattered with great places to stop for a picnic lunch. We found all the staff very friendly and helpful and particularly kind and accommodating for our neurodivergent son. All round a great place for a family day out with plenty of things for train fans to do.

This is an amazing hidden gem! With the obvious care and dedication from Brian and all the volunteers, this is a tranquil place of beauty that provides both education and entertainment for the family and at such an affordable price! Loads to see and do! We spent a good 2/3hrs there today :-) We will be back for sure! Fantastic!

Thank you Tracey for the Fabulous 5 Stars and your wonderful words! They are pure Music to the ears of every volunteer - it really keeps us all going! A lot of what has happened has been by accident - There was never a 'Big Bold Plan' - We didn't have any money - No core funding - The derelict land was purchased by our founder Rev Paten .. The original intention was to build a museum to work alongside the Nene Valley Railway .. But we couldn't raise the funds ... In 1988 we were offered 3 Victorian Aqueducts from nearby Abbots Ripton by British Rail and we said yes - We won a 'UK Environmental Teamwork Award' in 1998 and they were restored and we have never looked back! I worked for Caterpillar - I won a 'World Wide Community Service Award' with them and they let us have the 'Cat Demonstration Team' for 5 weeks to create all the landscaping, creating all the ponds and waterfalls! Ketton Cement used Cat Machine they heard about us and gave us 200 ton of stone for all the waterfalls - Then a volunteer won 250 baby native trees!! It has been amazing! We have just never give up! Creating an inner-city green space for Our Children's Children Tracey .. Thank you for your time ....

What a find this place is. We came from Cambridge having seen just a single roadside banner, you probably wouldn’t stumble across it.

Run by volunteers and enthusiasts, and it’s all the better for it. Lovely people, lots to look at and even some interactive ‘rail-scapes’ (is that a word?) for the kids to play with.

And then there are the gardens, lots of paths to explore and loads of info on the wildlife that lives there.

We ended up spending 3 hours here with our 3 year old, and we will definitely come back. They apparently have a classic car show in June so that’s already in the diary…

Hi Nick C - So Wonderful to see and read your kind words - It really keep us going !!! ... Sorry for the delay in thanking you ... So much happening .. all good stuff - But keeps you involved more or less 7 days a week ... Believe it or not in 2025 - This will be our 40th Anniversary - Half my lifetime - Since Rev Richard Paten saw the old derelict coal yard and brought it with his own money and donated it to the charity! It's all happened on a 'Wing and a Prayer' - we may be only volunteers - But something keeps us going! You know what the greatest thing that keeps us going - is - People liking what we are doing - Loving what has been created for our wildlife and people to enjoy ..? We hear so much about Cambridge being a 'Tourist Destination'.... But we are so, so pleased that people from Cambridge are visiting Peterborough!! Fabulous .. Thanks a Million for the 5 Stars also Nick C - Wonderful and for Loving our 'Hidden Gem'! See you in June!!

Had a fantastic time exploring the wildlife haven to find the reindeer before visiting Santa. My toddler enjoyed chatting with Santa and his elves. He also loves seeing the outdoor railway and the model railway controlling a range of Thomas the tank engine character trains. A great day out for the family at a good price.

Thank you Jennifer J - For your wonderful comments and your fabulous 5 Stars - So pleased you enjoyed what a few crazy volunteers have created ... It's been going a long time - But never been any core funding to really Get Going ! But as we volunteers work hard and improve the project we will get there .. We all want a 'Better World' - we are just a few crazy Volunteers 'Doing our Bit'? So pleased your child enjoyed Santa - Our Santa normally looks after the Model Railway - he is very versatile our Santa - Bless him! So pleased that you felt our pricing was good - Volunteers have kept the same prices for over 5 years now - Everything we raise we plough back to make the place better ... Looking after this amazing planet we all call 'Our Home' for Our Children's Children Jennifer J? - Thank you for your time !

We were visiting Peterborough and looked on Google for things to do. We came across the Railworld Wildlife Haven website. Being completely honest, I didn't find the website that great, but as we were staying 7mins away and our 2yr old LOVES trains, we thought we would pop down and see what it was like. We thought we might he there 20 mins max.

We arrived and were greeted by a really welcoming volunteer. I explained we hadn't been before and weren't really sure what to expect, so she opened a map and explained everything in each section. It was much bigger than I expected!

We paid our entry (so much cheaper than anywhere local to where we live!) and in we went.

My youngest instantly fell in love. There is a large (but not too big) fenced off area with a muxture of large model Christmas steam trains and Thomas the Tank Engine and friends trains. We spent ages watching them and pressing the button to make them go again when they stopped.

We convinced our son it was time to move onto the next part and we crossed a bridge over the River Nene. My eldest (a teenager) enjoyed taking photos of the scenery as we crossed. On the other side, we found viewing towers to watch the mainline trains the wildlife area was also over that side.

We all enjoyed walking around the wildlife area and saw a beautiful waterfall and a robin. I imagine it's even more stunning when the flowers are in full bloom.

We went indoors and my 2yr old did some colouring and then found a wooden train table so enjoyed playing there for a good 15 mins, whilst his brother watched the bluetits and their babies on the nest camera.

As it was Christmas when we went, we paid to see Father Christmas. He was very patient and spoke to my 2yr old and didn't rush the experience. My son asked for trains for Christmas and Father Christmas gave him a wrapped present.

We returned to the model trains at the beginning and the Santa Experience steam train was at the Nene Valley Railway station. We were invited onto the platform to watch as the steam engine was filled with water and then reattached to the carriages and we waved as the train pulled away.

In all, we spent over 3 hours at Railworld Wildlife Haven. I'm so glad we gave it a go. My son will be talking about it for a very long time to come!

Thank you to all the volunteers that make it so welcoming and well run.

Thank you Katie L - We volunteers certainly appreciate you taking the time to thank us .. We are just a small group of crazy Volunteers trying to make 'Our World' a Better Place? The volunteer project started in 1985 when local man Rev Richard Paten brought the land to create something special for his home city... .. He set up a registered charity and donated the land to the charity so that the city of Peterborough could always enjoy what the volunteers had done .... We have never had any core funding - We have raised funds as we went along! Crazy I know - The wildlife haven took over 30 years to create - it was derelict land - we restored and installed all the Victorian Bridges, landscaped it, created the ponds and waterfalls ... Our volunteers also won 250 trees and planted them! The Earth Centre took us 20 years - Volunteers made the rotating 'World' from an old car park barrier gate drive .. lol - Crazy .. Volunteers came along and created a model railways - We all work well together and plan to replace all the portable building as we progress forward - Everything we raise we plough back Katie .. Thanks a Million for the 5 stars! Hope to see you again in the nice weather - bring a picnic - best wishes...

Thank you Binswood for those lovely comments - So pleased we are your 'Grandsons Favourite Place'! Wonderful... As I always say - It's what you get into .. We have a great group of volunteers all with a passion for this amazing planet we all share and call 'Our Home'? It's so heart-warming that people want to help us .. Sometimes people ask us - 'Who Owns the Railworld Wildlife Haven'? Well - You do? - We all do...? We are a UK Registered Charity Run by Volunteers - for the public benefit - Everything we raise we plough back .. to make it all better ..... Rev Richard Paten Our Incredible Founder, he brought the land and donated it to the charity - But sadly he died in 2012 - But he put us in good stead to keep going! And we have ... We have a wonderful supportive City Council - They have helped us with the donation of redundant materials over the years, from old paving slabs (used to create the Garden Railway) to street lights to road planning's! They even donated an old Bus Shelter that volunteers converted into a 'Victorian Railway Halt'! Everyone working together to create a 'Better World' for our children and our children's children .. Thank you so much for your 5 Stars and your support Binswood

My previous visit was just before Covid and wow I’d forgotten what a gem this place is!

Where else can you find grapevines, tranquility, beautiful water features, endless greenery and even a fig tree just a few steps from the city centre?!

Children never stop learning when they visit and I never stop being impressed with simply how good this attraction is - and let’s not forget it’s all created and run by volunteers!

Such an excellent place to spend a morning or afternoon. Peterborough is blessed to have it 👌

Ahh Pep C - Thank you for all your positive comments - It is truly 'Music to the Ears' of all our volunteers to hear and see what you say! Thank you so much - And for the fabulous 5 Stars! Awesome! Some of us volunteers have been involved from the start - 30 Plus years ago! To be honest we didn't think it would take us this long! - But it has! It's All been done on a 'Wing and a Prayer'! - All of it! - We have never had any money - But as we all say - the Most important thing is to 'Want To Do IT'! ... Passion beats everything! It took us 3 years to put the first bridge in .. All the 250 Trees we won in a 'Clear Up A Grot Spot' in the Peterborough Evening Telegraph back in 1998! Little 2 ft saplings - Look at them now - Some are 40/50ft tall! We are so pleased you enjoyed what has been achieved - Thank you once again for the Big 5 Stars Pep C

Thank you for taking the time to comment and awarding us the Big 5 Stars! It means so much to our small group of volunteers, you can imagine Venture34569981592 how pleased we are with your lovely comments - They really help keep us going! Everything we raise we plough back.. The land was purchased by our Founder Rev Richard Paten - He then set up the UK Registered Charity and donated the land - and a small group of volunteers have been beavering away ever since! Some amazing companies have helped us - Hans Haefeli - Caterpillar Vice President at the time organised the 'Caterpillar Demonstration Team' to help with cutting out the ponds, waterfalls and three Victorian Bridge Supports! They helped the volunteers for 5 weeks! - It just goes to show how many good/supportive companies there are 'Out There'? The three large 'bridges' - They were scrap! Volunteers Saved them and RePurposed them! They were a local feature - 1840's Victorian Aqueducts from Abbots Ripton, donated to us by British Rail in 1988 when they were removed because there was insufficient space for the electrification cables for the ECML! - The 3 cast iron relics were restored when we won the 'UK - ICI/Dulux Environmental Teamwork Award'! 'Reinforcements Peterborough' donated all the steelwork, 'Perkins Engines' the concrete and Stuart Smith's - 'Peterborough Crane Hire' came in and lowered the bridges in place - It was amazing! Working together with the volunteers to make things better for everyone... Thank you once again - Venture34569981592
