A hidden gem in the beautiful neighborhoods of Amsterdam. We did a tour with the director, Joseph, who shared incredible works of art and stories. A “not miss” for the thinking person.

This museum is absolutely profound. It never advances commonplaces understandings or assumptions concerning artists with a 'free mind'. I appreciated the approach through which it is not explicitly stated how these artists have mental or physical disabilities, and rather their empowerment is remarked all throughout the experience. A must in Amsterdam for museum lovers.

The Embassy of the Free Mind is one of the BEST places to be in the whole world. To truly appreciate it, I suggest doing some research as to the resources available there. Perhaps, start with The Ritman Library documentary by S. Ferro & C. Weil. Mr. Ritman and the enthusiastic staff showcase not only the rare, first & early edition books and manuscripts, but also their love and passion for their incredible treasury of gnostic, hermetic, Rosicrucian and theosophical knowledge, to name a few.
All the members of the staff, volunteers and regular visitors are incredibly personable and made me feel at home. The free and open communication and sharing of ideas, no matter the level of study, provides any student of life with the freedom and space to either begin a journey into the self or to add to one’s enlightenment in a safe and accepting space.
There is no other place that can offer an amalgamation of diverse texts on wisdom. Some of the books in the Rare collection were published in the 1400s, but the knowledge goes back farther than the past couple of centuries. When you are ready to ask yourself what life is about, all you have to do is browse through the books. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll find. Then you’ll realize it’s 5:00 PM, and you’ll want to come back for the rest of the 24,000+ books! I suggest all the tours: Daily Tour, Rare Books, The Grail and any exhibit. Visit the website to see which collections appeal to you, likely all of them because all the ideas are connected by threads that begin to bring ideas into focus, depending on who you are (or who you are becoming)!
The building itself has a rich history. Please remember that admission isn’t free – it’s your mind that is given the space to be free to explore and create your own understanding. Imagine a place in which you can view something and engage in meaningful conversation with the text, with other people, with yourself. You can’t put a price tag on that.
What places the Embassy of the Free Mind above all other museums & libraries is the fact that each of the books and prints offers seeds of knowledge and wisdom from which any individual can grow and become aware of her/his place in the world and be connected with something greater. Perhaps, when you are so moved, you will even be inspired to act. Thank you to everyone at the Embassy of the Free Mind. I am grateful.

My visit to the Embassy of the free mind was much more than I’d ever have expected. Anyone with an interest in esoteric traditions, thought and practice should consider making the effort to visit.
My own visit was made all the more valuable than I’d ever have imagined through discussions with the team at the Embassy.
A wonderful building full of wonderful humans that are dedicated to the preservation and exploration of the often hidden and hard to access historical narratives. On display are the results of many mystical, artistic and textual attempts made to describe many individuals internal journeys.
Well worth spending some time here and leaving any preconceptions at the door is highly recommended.

The Embassy of the Free Mind is a must-see for anyone interested in occult or esoteric schools of thought, and an informative experience for anyone else. Though the Museum may be small in size, the content within is anything but. With a collection that includes over 20,000 texts spanning at least 6 centuries, there are books and prints lining every wall and every display case. There is even a reading room where any visitor can thumb through 18th and 19th century texts at their own leisure!
Albeit a bit more expensive, I would highly recommend the Old Book Guided Tour to any visitor. No other museum in Amsterdam can give you the up-close-and-personal experience this tour provides. No display cases, no red tape. Just you, a curator, and whatever centuries-old text you wish to see. The curators and staff are extremely knowledgeable and courteous, and will happily answer any questions you have about the conceptually dense material you're viewing, in and outside of the tour. For example, I requested to see Atlanta Fugiens by Meyer after having gone on the Old Book Guided Tour with my family. They not only let me know when they'd be getting it back (they had lent it out to another collection), but even let me handle and read the book personally when it arrived!
Needless to say, this library was the highlight of my time spent in Amsterdam. I challenge anyone who has read through this lengthy review to find a single museum in the city with the level of hands-on interaction with history the Embassy of the Free Mind provides.
