THorsmork is a natural Reservation between valleys, glaciers, mountains and rivers. For those who like to walk in the middle of nature this place is an excellent option. There are easy trails and others with a greater degree of difficulty, the choice is yours. Wear clothes and shoes suitable for hiking and take a bottle of water and remember to collect your garbage, because the Icelanders preserve their island a lot and we will not be tourists doing the opposite.

The most beautiful place I visited in Iceland
You need to have a real 4x4 to get there or take a scheduled bus. There are also super jeep trips available. I recommend taking an individual trip and spend some time hiking or stop where ever you like to enjoy the beautifull nature. There are camping places on a few spots.

In July 2014, I did the Fimmvörðuháls hike and the weather deteriorated as I descended into Thórsmörk so I missed out on some spectacular scenery. So I made it my goal to revisit and am so glad I did. Again, the first day we arrived it was cloudy and views were obscured but we camped overnight and awoke to a glorious day to finally discover why people rave about this place. The views here on a sunny day are second to none. Don't miss the Stakkholtsgjá canyon's hidden waterfall, viewpoint at the top of Valahnúkur mountain, and the first few kilometers of the Fimmvörðuháls trail just past the Básar campsite.

A nice day trip is possible by bus. We went on a cloudy day in mid June with mild improvement forecast for later in the day. We caught a Reykjavik Express bus at Hvolsvollur at 9 AM, which left the N1 gas station around 9:15 and got to Thorsmork around 11 (Husadalur huts), with a stop at Gigjokul on the way. We stayed on the bus past Langidalur to the last stop, Basar huts, got there 11:30. Bought a map for 1000K. Hiked from Basar to Rettarfell, 509m/1670ft, about 280m/900 ft elevation gain. Clouds kept us from seeing the glaciers but the canyons were still dramatic. We started to do a loop with the Hvannargil trail but ultimately turned around and went out and back. Total about 2.5 miles long, with stops it took us 1.75 hours at a moderate pace. We ate lunch in Basar.
Then we walked along the road to Langidalur huts. Here you're in the broad Krossa river valley. You cross the Krossa on a cool portable foot bridge. The weather had started clearing now, much to our delight. There's some stream/rivulet crossing just before Langidalur. This took us about 30 minutes at a relaxed pace.
From Langidalur we went up to Valahnukur (454m/1490ft), about 235m/770ft elevation gain, and the views were outstanding as the clouds had cleared to the North and East, and the glaciers were visible for the most part. We descended to Husadalur and were easily there 30 min before the bus left at 4 PM. This hike was 1.6 miles long and took about 1.5 hours with a long stop at the top. The bus had us back in Hvolsvollur about 5:30, we had time to go to Kronan before it closed, and see Seljalandsfoss too!
This was an expensive trip, at about 90 USD per person for the roundtrip bus fare. We had a Toyota Rav4 AWD car but it was definitely not adequate for the deepest river crossings, and the F249 road to Thorsmork was atrocious in general (rocky, potholes). It was a great day but mainly because the clouds cleared, so if it is not forecast to be good weather, seek out cloudy pictures of Thorsmork online and decide for yourself if it's worth a day of your Iceland trip. In June 2021, with low demand (the bus mostly empty), we were able to catch the bus without any reservation, and pay on board. At peak demand, not sure that would be possible.

If you have the vehicle to take you there, this a trip that cannot be missed! Possible day trip from Reykjavik. However, you will need a good 4x4 vehicle, preferably with a snorkel as you will be traversing ca 10 rivers of varying sizes and depths along this Icelandic F-road to get to Thorsmork. However, with the right vehicle, the driving tour is half the fun of going there! And when you arrive in Thorsmork, 30 km after having turned off the main road at Seljandefoss, what a location you have come to: A most beautiful valley situated rundt under the Eyafelljokular (the volcano that popped in 2009 that halted all European air traffic for a month), and in the bottom, Myrdalsjokulen which is much larger and hides the enormous Katla volcano that is 60 years overdue for its next eruption. Great vantage point for hiking. We stayed at the Basar camping site which is as far as you can drive in Thorsmork.

Took the “Thorsmork Valley” tour with Activity Iceland and had a great experience!
An amazing trip on a super-jeep, crossing glacial rivers, visiting stunningly beautiful canyons. The views are simply breathtaking.
The most beautiful point (for me) was Nathusagil secret ravine and waterfall, very difficult to reach, with challenging rivers crossings (you have to use rope/chains aids that are put on the rocks): adrenaline and incredibly rewarding when you see the waterfall!
We had a small group (5 people in total) and a great guide, Ingvar. :-)
Don’t miss the tour!

The road to Þórsmörk is an adventure of its own and the difficulty of access makes it less crowded and much more rewarding than the average tourist site.
Whatever your transport choice I encourage you to spend the night and enjoy at least two full days of hiking. Volcano Huts are a great place to stay, situated at a crossroads of trails.

I'm not sure why Thorsmork is mentioned as an activity in Reykjavik on tripadvisorvas it is a 2 hour drive away, but it's definitely worth a visit.
There are several bus companies that go there from Reykjavik and drop you off so you can hike. Not all reviews about the pick up afterwards were that postive though, so I decided to go for the extra expense and do a superjeep tour with Activity Iceland. I really enjoyed this tour, you got to see more places than you would with the bus. Our guide was informative and very helpfull when we needed to cross streams when hiking in 2 canyons. I would definitely recommend this tour of the beatiful Thorsmork area.

Will the day hikes from the volcano huts be open June 8th? Specifically the panorama, highlights and circle trail. I've read some places that the trails may not open in thorsmork until the end of June.

Party of 4 coming 5/20, 21, 23 . . .should we prebook Thorsmork super jeep our in advance?
Rédigé le 21 février 2019
probably a good idea. we took the super bus to the volcano huts, which worked fine for us. probably a lot cheaper than the super jeeps...
