I was walking through the area and decided to stop in for a quick visit as the ticket I purchased for the National Gallery allows free entrance here. The house is small and is really 3 rooms. The painter left hundreds of painting to the country of Iceland and they are on display in several museums. The theme of the paintings in the home related to trolls. Great way to spend 30 minutes if you have the free entrance ticket.

Interesting little visit - the artist's home almost exactly as he left it when he died in 1958. About 30 of his works were on display from 1900-1910 and 1945-1948. Curator was very informative and advised us that the works are regularly changed as Jonsson left 1100 works to the state! Bought as part of a 3-site ticket which was pretty good value.

wow 4 reviews for this museum and 3 of them are for Einar Jonsson by mistake.
Ásgrímur Jónsson is a painter not a sculptor. His museum is a few blocks away from the Einar Jonsson sculpture museum. It's half of a small duplex.
Ásgrímur was Iceland's first artist to make his living from his art.
His painting is in the expressionist style with bold use of colors.
His house is rather simple consisting of 2 rooms downstairs and his studio upstairs.
There are only a couple works of art.
A nice but quick stop. It was fun to see how an artist lives.

there are lots of sculptures to see. Asgrimur Jonsson (1876-1958) was one of the pioneers of visual art. He was mostly known as a painter. To know more about him you have to visit the museum which is the house he lived in. The sculpture range from small to massive and really cause you think about the subject matters.

We visited when the museum was closed, but were able to wander through the extensive sculpture garden. The building is striking, and the sculpture garden is impressive.

Jonsson was a famous Icelandic painter, somewhat of an Impressionist. This museum is tiny - it's the house he lived in (3 rooms on the ground floor and the upstairs studio). The living space (bedroom and living room/study) contain his sparse furniture but do give a sense of the interior of these 19th century small homes. His studio was interesting for 2 things: the paint spattered hardwood floor (a real sense of an artist living there!) and the large wooden lockers that he used to transport his paints, brushes, etc en plein air. I think most of his best works must be in museums or private collections, because they weren't in the museum! About 6 works in the studio - watercolors and sketches.
I walked there from the city center (the visitors info area) and it was a pleasant walk which i particularly enjoyed because of the houses along the street (Bergstaostrat). Most of them were very large, either turn of the 20th century or mid-century. Generally stucco, but a few were corrugated steel w/gingerbread decor. I think i walked past some embassies too. Interesting to see large houses, presumably upper class at the time (and possibly now). Wouldn't recommend the museum unless someone has a real interest in the artist, but the area was one that I might not have wandered around if I wasn't going to the museum.
