We visited the cave all by ourselves. The place is close to Reykjavik, and there is a small car park two minutes away from the cave. The path to the cave is very clear and simple. Getting in the cave is easy — but that is only where the adventure starts...
The cave does not look or feel like a tourist attraction, it is very close to its natural state. There are (very) few chain fences to protect some of the most fragile geological formations, and there is a (small and confusing) map on the wall near the entrance.
There are two recommended pieces of equipment: a good flashlight and a helmet. We had neither of those, only smartphone flashlights and no helmets. We learned that the recommendations are there for a reason...
The cave is a large one, it is almost a kilometer long. The entrance is somewhere in the middle of the cave, and there do not seem to be any decent maps of the cave available. In most places, it is possible to walk upright or almost upright (I am 6'1"/185 cm) but in some places all fours is the way to go. There are a lot of sharp corners where you may end up damaging the valuable geological formations by your forehead or back.
While there is a map on the wall, it does not necessarily help much. The entrance (and more importantly the exit) is slightly hidden in the wall of the tunnel. There are also some branches and forks, so it is possible to get lost in the tunnel. (Been there, done that, and the feeling is not the most pleasant one, as there may not be other people nearby.)
The tunnel itself is quite pleasant in its atmosphere. In the typical Icelandic summer weather (fog, rain, wind, +10 °C/50 °F) the tunnel felt calm and warm.
The lava tunnel itself is one of the most impressive natural formations I have visited. Definitely worth a visit if you happen to like caves and tunnels. You can feel like a speleologist in a safe environment, and you can visit the cave on your own.
Full five stars for that. But be wiser than us; take a good flashlight (3 W or more LED), spare batteries (powerbank, spare flashlight), and preferably a helmet (or a thick beanie or be very careful). If you want to be extra cautious, tell someone where you are going, there is no mobile network coverage in the cave. When you explore the cave, progress slowly and always look back to see how it looks from the other direction.
If you are claustrophobic, don't come too far from the exit (or stay in the fresh air). Kids (at least some kids) will love the cave, but as there are a lot of tight places in this playground, keep them near. I would not take kids under maybe five years of age into the cave.
(And, if all this sounds too frightening or complicated, book a group visit with a professional guide.)

If you like caves then you'll like this one. Crawling is expected. Keep up with the tour group. The landscape is a sight to see. Probably do not go to this cave when it is snowing.

Was not sure we could enter without a guide, so we just took the short walk out to see the opening. Beautiful landscape surrounding the cave area.

I'm a big American who got super out of shape during covid.
Like, laughably out of shape.
This is a cave that requires some crawling.
I'm also claustrophobic.
So our tour guide (Ivan from adventure vikings) got to hear a lot of expletives come out of my mouth while we were down there, especially when I awkward chubby-girled my way into getting stuck and dislocation my hip.
Poor guy.
I left with so many bruises, it's not even funny.
I LOVED IT.
It was great. Really great. I recommend taking a guide. Sure, free is great and all, but a guide can give you an idea about the specific rocks and history of the cave, and what's coming up next.
If I go back I will wear some kind of gloves to protect my hands because there's one part where the rocks are a little less than friendly, but they're not a lot of hands free options, and if you didn't notice, I'm a big baby.
I do not recommend it if your balance is super terrible because climbing back out will be unnecessarily awkward. But it's fun, and if I fit, anyone who only needs one airplane seat will fit.

We had the tour in the middle of January and the entrance to the cave was completely filled up with snow. Nevertheless, our guide Ivan was amazing and made a little whole trough which we could enter the cave. Definitely an adventure and the cave itself was also worth it seeing !!!

Winter time ! Absolutely. Adam with adventure Vikings was our guide , very nice and patient gentleman that made us feel safe and comfortable during the tour . The Leidarendi cave which translates as “the end of the journey” is not lit with artificial lighting but adventure Vikings provide crampons, helmet and head lamp . Cave has a lot of snow in the entrance so we have to slide in on our bum and crawl out which made the adventure more interesting. He took time for us to take pictures of icicle explain the different colors of lava , and how it is formed. There are areas we have to bend down a bit , uneven terrain but even with a bad knee I made it ok. We exit the same way we entered due to the other exit is filled with snow . Great experience! One of the best cave I’ve ever entered if you want adventure in the land of Fire and ice

This is a nice little cave. We booked a tour with Viking Adventures since we had a six year old with us and we are glad we did. The geology is really interesting. There are a few tight spaces and one places we all had to belly crawl (briefly). Make sure you wear waterproof clothing when you visit.

This was a really cool cave to visit, the path was mapped out and easy to reach. There is some great hiking in the area too. Make sure you wrap up warm.

Such an amazing tour with so many different things to see. Some tight places but really interesting geology and features. Well worth the effort.

May you enter the caves without a Guide? Is there a fee?

How does this Leiðarendi Lava Tube compare with The Lava Tunnel at Raufarholshellir? Which one is more spectacular?

I will self drive to Leidarendi. what's the landmark or sign I should watch out for?

I just came back from Iceland. I found the place. There was a mini bus at the meeting point and a lay-by parking space . You won't miss it because there is nothing else along the road. You can key in Leidarendi Lava cave in Google map to lead you to the right road.

We are interested in touring these caves (end of Aug) with a guide but will be in the area with a car and do not want a tour from Reykjavik as we'll be moving on afterwards. Does anyone know of a tour group that will offer meeting on site? I've done a fair bit of searching but may have to contact the tour groups individually.

I am planning to hire a car and explore the nearby area after the tour. Is there any cheaper guided tour without the pick up service?
I am planning to go to Iceland in mid march. Would it still be icy??

The roads should be fine, unless it is actually snowing at the time. We were there if Feb, and mostly the roads were clear.

Hello !
I'm trying to understand the parts of the tour when you are crawling and squeezing. You gave a height of two feet. How long did you have to squeeze and or crawl ?
My husband booked this trip as a surprise without considering my fear of closed in space. I can handed it briefly if I know space will be after a short crawl /squeeze. But I worry about becoming overwhelmed in the dark if the space is tight for most of the walk.
Did you have to crawl on your belly at all ? Any information you can giveanxious girl would be great !
If it helps I'm five foot four inches and small/medium frame and in good shape. Thank thank.

I did not have to crawl on my belly. Most places I was able to crab-walk. Hands and Feet, crouched low. In one spot, on the way out only, I had to drop to hands and knees. None of the places that you had to get real low to pass thru were very long, maybe 10 to 15 feet. Each such place always led to another room or chamber where you could stand. I suppose a very tall person would have to crouch down in most of the chambers. I am 5'7" and could stand, with the helmet on, in most places, (other than the passages that had to be crawled through).

In the areas where you have to crawl-- how long are they? We are planning to go but get a wee claustrophobic. It's not bad if I'm only crawling a short distance and then out into a larger area but if it's often and long I'm a bit concerned.
Thanks!

Is there a guide that we can hire at the location if we drive there ourselves? What are the entrance fees? Can we rent helmets and flashlights?
Rédigé le 10 janvier 2015
...if you have booked a guide you can join him/her at the cave, if not you must explore the lave tube by yourselve. It's an open place in the landscape without fee, about 3 min. from the parking at the gravel road.
