Difficult climb to the top, but once at the top you have a beautiful view of the surroundings! Then, after a tough section, you arrive at a lake in Montenegro, which you cannot reach by car. You can enjoy swimming here. All in all a tough, but unforgettable day!

Tips in advance: go with a guide. The ascent and descent are dangerously steep. In addition, the parking lot of the Maglic is difficult to reach with a normal car! It is not a problem with a Jeep or the like, but the road surface contains holes that can destroy the underside of a passenger car.

We decided that we wanted to hike Mt. Maglic on our trip and chose to through a company called Much better adventures on a group trip. This company used EST Adventure as the local company to guide us.
The pre departure information was enough to get by with, and whilst we was on a short pre climb holiday in Croatia more information came through to us regarding what to expect. We was collected at Dubrovnik airport and taken to Trebinje in Bosnia passing through 2 passport controls along the way. We met our guide Igor here and had lunch before heading on tour local hotel for the night.
The drive up to the start of the hike was a very bumpy journey and after an hour we was at the start of the trail.
The hike was beautiful, passing through trees and bushes before hiking up steeper paths to the start of the cable sections. The cable was a little loose and Igor advised against using it, which was not a problem as there was plenty of rocks to get hold off and climb up. Igor watched over everyone at these points to ensure everyone passed safely. After another hour we crested the ridge to see the summit nearby. A final 20 minutes of gentle walking and final scramble and we was on the summit of the highest mountain in Bosnia.
The descent was arranged to visit Trnovacko lake which even though looked far away was inviting us to visit. The descent started off quite gentle through the undulating hills, but soon became very steep on slippery scree paths. This particular section took us an hour to descend and plenty of rocks were knocked off the path higher up that bounced down around us. Care has to be taken at this section and the training that you had to put in prior to the hike stopped your legs from burning up. Eventually we arrived at the emerald green Trnovacko lake and some of our group had a swim to cool off. After an hour here we had the hike to finish and a final push back up over a ridge we arrived back at our vehicle to take us back to our hotel.
It took our group just under 3 hours to ascend and another 3 hours to descend the peak. A great day out in lovely weather with exceptional views.

Beautiful walk from Drina rafting centre in a 4x4 to starting point. Reached a vanatge point at 1800 m in about 1 1/2 hrs, down into a valley and up to a beautiful lake at 1500 m. The guide prepared coffee and tea for all in one of the shelters stocked for hikers. Warm and professional guide.

Maglic hiking tour | TaraCanyonRaft
taracanyonraft-planinarska-tura-maglic
Maglić is Dinaric Mountain on the border of Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. The highest peak of the mountain is Veliki Vitao (2396 meters) which is located in Montenegro, while the peak of Maglić is the highest in Republika Srpska (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and it’s located at an altitude of 2386 meters.

If you translate Maglic it is like the Foggy mountain, and an older name was Gromovnik-Thunder Mountain.

Winter time expeditions are extreme alpinism because of snow ice and wind

Maglić is like Magic
08:00 Breakfast at the camp
08.00 Breakfast is the most important meal, especially if you decide to go mountain climbing. Our recommendation is to have strong traditional breakfast. Pack your stuff and photo equipment, put them in our off-road vehicles and we can go climbing on mighty Maglić mountain. The road to the start point is one part a highway and the other a tight mountain safari road trou virgin forest Perucica.Where we stop for view point, waterfall Skakavac and old untouched unesco protected forest Perucica. We drive for an hour to a high ground area, a plateau called Prijevor where we make a break for taking photos. From national park viewpoint tower, and refresh on cold and fresh mountain drinkable water spring Studenac.
10:00 Hiking from Prijevor to Trnovacko lake
10.00 From plateau Prijevor, we continue hiking on foot, and a hiking trail to the mountain peak lasts for about 4 hours. We are going to have more short breaks and one longer on the Trnovačko Lake where we will have a snack. As you are approaching the peak, magical views will be visible while other mountain peaks come from afar. Like Volujak, Bioč, Volujak, Trnovacki Durmitor, Vucevo, Zelengora, Perucica-virgin forest, Tara River Canyon, Piva River Canyon and Lake, Durmitor mountains, Ljubisnja, Jahorina Mountain, Treskavica, Bjelasnica and many…because it is a great view on a clear day from highest mountain peak of Bosnia & Herzegovina
15:00 Top of Maglic
15.00 The road itself is not so demanding but it requests a great physical readiness. As you are conquering the peak of Maglić, its beauty pervades you. It’s an incredible feeling to breathe in the fresh air as you stand on the top of this beauty of Dinarske Mountains which is part of Dinaric Alps and Viadinarica hiking trail. Full of impressions, we go back to plateau Prijevor by our vehicles.
18:00 Short break at Prijevor, return to camp
18.00 A short break on plateau Prijevor before we enter the vehicles and drive back to start camp.
19.00 Dinner

Wonderful nature reserve, primordial forest, accessible yet demanding. One can really feel the call on nature in the wonderful Sutjeska National Park with mount Maglic as the epicenter.
Views abound, and the climb is a rewarding challenge. Rangers are friendly and will do anything to make your stay possible.

We've had the most amazing hike to Maglic and Trnovacko jezero. There was an adventure in there too when we were surrounded by bulls, but I'd need to write a blog to tell you all about it. The view from the top of Bosnia and Herzegovina is amazing. It helped that we had the sunniest of days and could see for miles ahead.

Pohorie Maglič a Zelengora ( na druheh strane priesmyku Sutjeska) je pokojné , so zachovalou prírodou, označenými cestami a minimom turistov

The place is amaaazing and so beautiful but the trail is really tough. I think it was going to be fine but when it started to rain, the ground became so slippery and dangerous, and we were going up using the via ferata when it started to rain. The toughest part was going down from the lake viewing point all the way down to the lake itself, the path was rocks and they were very slippery while we were going down, so I suggest you go only in the dry season if you have the chance to do that. The lake view from top is stunning and the mountain is soooo beautiful. Hiking poles so recommended.
