The museum tells the story of the Panacea Society founded in Bedford by Mabel Barltrop. Mabel's family home can be visited and there is a video about their lives. There is a nice garden and you can buy refreshments. There is a chapel and the wireless room where devotees gathered to listen to the radio and piano. Castleside is a large building where the society set aside rooms for the bishop's who they hoped would come to witness the opening of Joanna Southcott's box. It was all fascinating. A lot to read so we spent a long time here

I spent 4 hours here. The history of the Panacea Community is very interesting & now the Panacea Charitable Trust helps the poor and sick in Bedford. I was invited to take part in a printing workshop- using a printing press dated 1857 - the same one the community used to print their religious pamphlets on. I also sat in on an entertaining & informative talk about Joanna Southcott & the mysterious box of prophecies, given by the Director of the Museum. The café is pleasant & I enjoyed coffee and cake in the pretty garden. The house where Octavia and her daughter & followers lived in the 1920s and 30s was very interesting as all the furniture & decorations have been kept the same. The volunteer staff are all charming & give a lot of information if you want it.
Amazingly, entry is free but you can give a donation.

What a hidden gem! Saw the museum by chance, ended up spending two hours there. Fascinating bit of local history but also great for anyone interested in late Victorian and Edwardian interiors. Beautiful and well maintained garden. Very helpful and friendly staff. Tea room quite small but on the day we went the sun was shining so sat outside. Overall - really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed visiting this museum and was surprised how extensive it is.
It tells the story of the Panacea Society, an extinct women’s religious organisation which is of limited appeal to me but the relevant social history, buildings and contents are fascinating. This would have been a very pleasant environment for its inhabitants.
The volunteers were most informative and enthusiastic. The museum and property is run by a charity and is not promoting religious views but undertakes worthwhile charitable work.
Entrance is free but donations are appreciated.

This is an extremely well run and documented museum. The story of the Panacea Movement was unknown to us and we had spent time studying it on their website. On arrival we found there was a very clear introduction video and the signage and story boards are very clear. We were there for about two hours. Everyone will have a different view of the story and the merits of the movement, the story of the box and the healing waters. But I have to congratulate the trustees and staff for the quality and clarity of the Museum

Thoroughly enjoyed my visit to this atmospheric old house, finding out about the Panacea 'cult' who lived here, and strolling around the scenic garden area, although didn't manage to get into the tearoom before it closed. Would recommend a visit if you're in town and at a loose end, as it's free of charge, and the Higgins Gallery is also just across the road.

A hidden treasure in Bedford, upon entering the beautiful house and gardens your drawn into a strange world of a religious cult with a well documented history of a manipulative leadership, a box containing prophecies that will lead us to a new millennium and papers which were sent around the world to cure all illness . The houses with beautifully preserved rooms and gardens are worth a visit by themselves.

Not having heard about the Panacea Society until very recently we weren't totally sure what to expect. The information in the museum is both fascinating and substantial, relating to the society itself and to those historical figures that led to it coming into existence.
Well worth a couple of hours of time for anyone who was an interest in history and/or religion.
