Lake is beautiful but only boating activity was available. The resort rooms are OK but there is electricity issue and generator works only for a little time with no hot water facility. Only recommend day trip

Great relief after being around the generally dry and hot area. Located on the road from Karachi to Hyderabad. The wind was refreshing, coming over the water. A nice restaurant with reasonable food is available.

Be aware that you will only view the wildlife (especially the birds) if you take boat trip of about 1 hour. The wildlife near the park entrance is sparse, but there is a lovely view of the water and a nice relaxing restaurant.

Being a Karachiite, we live the city life without realizing the gems just around the corner. Keenjhar Lake, one of the largest in Pakistan, a fresh water lake that supplies water to karachi, is a wonderful place to spend a day. It took 90 mins for us to reach Keenjhar from Sharah Faisal in karachi. The roads are excellent and getting there is no problem. There are rest houses that you can take on rent else one can enjoy a nice little picnic there. A very nice restaurant called Noori serves food there.
One can do boat ride there, but nothing more. The place can be a full fledged resort. The kids loved it and I loved it.
Hopefully one can see migratory birds there in winter, which is when I plan to visit again.

Keenjhar Lake is also popular to be known as Kalri Lake. This is situated in District of Thatta, Sindh. This lake is located about 122 km from Karachi. The lake extends to about 24 km and is 6 km broad. It is approximately 26 feet deep. The Indus River runs equidistant to the lake.

Actually, Kalri Lake is formed by the unification of two lakes i.e. Sonehri and Kheenjhar. The motive behind this unification is to provide fresh and clean water to the individuals of Karachi and Thatta. It is predicted an extremely significant area for wildlife species. It is a perfect place for habitat of winter birds such as geese, cormorants, gulls, duck, flamingos and coots etc.

Keenjhar Lake is the largest perennial freshwater lake with extensive reed-beds and blooming lotus, mainly in the shallow western and northern parts. The lake supports diverse flora and fauna, and is a breeding, staging and wintering area for a wide variety of waterfowls.

The lake’s freshwater ecosystem is under threat due to increased industrial and domestic effluent discharge through the Kalri-Baghar Feeder (KB Feeder) canal which carries contaminants from Kotri urban and Industrial area. There are a number of industries in Kotri, which drain their effluents into the KB Feeder and these chemicals together with sewage discharge into the Keenjhar Lake. This water is then supplied to Karachi for drinking purposes.

The lake was formed by the union of two lakes Sonehri and Keenjhar, through the construction of a bund on their eastern side.

Originally, these lakes came into existence when the Indus changed its course. The purpose of the bund was to enhance the storage capacity of the lake. Rain torrents from surrounding hills were also the source of water to Keenjhar Lake.

The area had been an estuary of the Sakro branch of Indus River for a long time. This is evident from the fossilised life scattered over the area.

The lake is endowed with a rich wealth of natural resources comprising mainly 55 species of fish, 263 species of aquatic and terrestrial plants, 51 species of birds and almost 98 species of large and small mammals. Surrounding areas of the lake provide ideal habitat for almost 23 species of reptiles and amphibians.

It is a place favorable for tourists’ attraction. Majority people daily visit here from Karachi, Thatta and Hyderabad. It is known to be a great inspiration for folk poets. This place was appreciated by Shah Abdul Latif Bhattayi in his poetry.

Noori Jam Tamachi, the popular folklore of Sindh is belonged to this place. He was married to a beautiful fisher girl Noori. There is tomb in the middle of the lake known as Noori’s Tomb. It is a popular spot and can be visualized from the shore. This shrine is visited by hundreds of people daily. Another folklore story of Sonehri and Jhum Pir, the fairy and the prince, is also associated to this lake.

It is a perfect place for family picnics and hangouts of friends. Noori Restaurant is also established for the visitors near the lake’s shore. Morever, different departments including military (pictures att) guest rooms can be booked through rederence. People from all around the world come to visit this tremendous place.
