It’s the best and very sacred place to be, it’s the worlds highest Gurudwara situated at 15000 feet above sea level. Nearby you can also visit valley of flowers and that too amid a beautiful place to be.

A trek far better than the Valley of Flowers with breathtaking views. The Khichdi at the Langar after all the trekking is food for the soul. Worth every bit of effort.

Its a very beautiful and serene place at an altitude of approx 14500 ft. The trip from Govind Ghat (till where the motorable road ends) can be done either by walk, horseback or a chopper till Ghangaria. Ghangaria is the last habitable village before the Gurudwara. It is located approx at 10000 ft. Most people who visit Hemkunt Sahib stay the night here and climb to Hemkunt Sahib the next morning. Since the gurudwara closes at 2 pm, everyone starts around 4.30 to 5 am. It takes anywhere between 3 to 6 hours to walk up. On horseback one takes about 2.5 hours. Those who cannot walk up or sit on a horse go up by a palkhi carried by 4 men.
On reaching the top, the pilgrim takes a dip in the holy lake (its freezing cold even in the summer) after which he prays in the gurudwara.
All visitors are provided langar (community free kitchen) to reokenish their strength for the walk down.
All along the way one can see lovely scenes with water falls and streams as well as high snow covered peaks of the Himalaya.

I went to Hemkunt Sahib. Adorned with a beautiful scenic view, the holy place offers tranquillity away from the din of the city and into the lap of nature. It is great place to go.

The steep climb from Ghangharia gives a chance for introspection. Just a suggestion that its a place for pilgrimage not picnic. The young visitors from the faith definitely needs an orientation on the behavior to be observed during the pilgrimage, right from Rishikesh upwards. Wanted to do wash the dishes at the Gurudwara Sahib but could not muster the courage to volunteer for Kar Seva, as there were many volunteers. May be next time !

One of the holiest of Sikh shrines, Hemkunt Sahib has an interesting history. The tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh (1666 – 1708), in his autobiography, described the location of a lake nestled high up in the mountains where he had meditated in his previous birth. Taking clues from this description, the lake was located more than 200 years later, in the 1930s by Sant Sohan Singh, a retired Granthi from the Indian Army. The first Gurdwara here, 10 ft. by 10 ft. was built in 1935. Later, a larger Gurdwara was built under the supervision of General Harkirat Singh. The lake is named Lake Lokpal.
Legend has it that Lakshman, brother of Ram, also meditated here, and there is a small Lakshman temple adjoining the Gurdwara.
The complex closes by 3 pm.
The route to the Gurdwara starts at Gobindghat. There is a road up to Pulna (about 3 kms.) and the 10 kms. trek to Ghangaria starts there. From Ghangaria to Hemkunt Sahib is about 6 to 7 kms.
Weather permitting, one can take a helicopter from Gobindghat to Ghangaria, the cost is about 3000 per passenger; each passenger is allowed 5 kgs. of baggage. There is no advance booking. The service is run by Air Deccan.
It is possible to start from Gobindghat early in the morning, visit Hemkunt Sahib and get back to Gobindghat by the evening. Take the helicopter from Gobindghat to Ghangaria, and take a pony from Ghangaria to Hemkunt Sahib and back to Pulna; alternately, take the pony from Pulna to Hemkunt Sahib.
If you are trekking from Pulna, the road is paved but the climb is somewhat steep; one goes from an altitude of around 6500 ft. at Pulna to 10000 ft . at Ghangaria. There are Dhabas along the way, but also a lot of crap of the ponies. There are sweepers appointed to keep the track clean, they try, but clearly their effort is not enough. It also does not help that they also ask for money from passers by.
Ponies from Pulna to Ghangaria (one way) cost around 800 and from Ghangaria to Hemkunt Sahib (one way) around 700; but these rates vary based upon demand.
There is a Gurdwara at Gobindghat which offers rooms at very reasonable rates: contact the Office Manager at 7579006947. They also have a Cloak Room if you want to leave behind some heavy baggage. And if you need to stay at Govindghat, there is a Gurdwara offering accommodation there too!
It is a tough climb from Ghangaria to Hemkund Sahib. My Polar watch shows a distance of 7 kms. I walked slowly and steadily, for just under 4 hours, took one break, going from 10,000 ft. to 15,200 ft.; my Max Heart rate went up to 134, and I shed 1608 calories!
There are small eateries along the way, one can get the normal tea and coke and Limca and biscuits.
One warms up and sweats on the climb, but having reached the Gurdwara, it is cold! Very thoughtfully, the Gurdwara provides blankets to keep you warm as you sit for the prayers. Ardas is held at 10.30 and 12.30.
We had langar, which was Khichdi with nutri-nuggets and Tea, and were pleasantly surprised to find an option for Tea without sugar!
People take a dip in the adjoining lake, there is a separate private section for ladies; we chose not to.
Around a 100 ft. above the Gurdwara, the mountain side was filled with Brahm Kamals, an auspicious white flower, which grows only in high altitudes.

There are two options to reach Hemkund Saheb Gurudwara from base camp of Ghangaria- pony ride or walk on foot. It was a test of strength for us to reach up. People start early to make it before the gurudwara closes (2.00PM if I am not wrong). No one is allowed to stay there so one needs to return on same day. The trek is much better maintained than the trek of valley of flowers and there are tea stalls at distance of about every 1.5 or 2 km. There are no toilets on the way. Temporary toilets were locked as if they were having some treasure. Even if they were open, I am sure they would not be in a condition to use by humans. I would recommend that one should start early (before 7.00AM) if possible from hotel and should not make long breaks initially. It really takes some time to reach on top if you are on food and not really very fit physically. Raincoat and umbrella are must for rainy seasons.

Hemkunt sahib is a religious place of sikh religion , and it is devoted to tenth guru of sikhs shri guru gobind singh ji , the place is situated at an altitude of around 4650 mtrs in himalayas, it is around 275 km from rishikesh and you can travel either by bus or by car to gurudwara Gobind ghat a place from where you need to start the trekking it is one of the tough treks in india total distance which need to be covered by foot is 20 kms and it will take 3 to 4 days to cover the distance to reach shri Hemkunt sahib and then back to Gobind ghat . Even you can hire a pony if you find the trek difficult , The complete journey will be thrilling as while travelling towards Gobind ghat from rishikesh there are a lot of sites which gives you goose bumps while crossing them and if you are a mountain climate and nature loving person then you surely love this place.

This is a great Heavenly trek . It's a long trek but worth it . The gurudwara is small and next to the lake . Most of the time temperature is negative and very cold but the dip in the lake is very chilling and refreshing .

Hi. I plan on doing the pilgrimage to Hemkund Sahib and trek to the Valley of Flowers end July.
Based upon your past experience:
1) Will it be busy at this time, with a lot of people along the route?
2) How likely is it that I might get a room at Gurdwara Gobind Ghat & Gobind Dham without prior reservations?
3) Should I make reservations at local hotels instead?
4) What sort of weather should I expect?

HI. Am travelling from Mumbai tomorrow. and likely to reach Govind ghat by road from Dehradun. Having gone through some of the travellers reviews, my concern for a member in my group has got me bit worried. He is 50 plus, never been physically active. The unavoidable trek has raised a query in my mind. What if one decides to do the entire trek, and midway is unable to carry on. Is there any assistance available to carry on ? the second lap from Govind Dham till the Hemkund gurudwara is more challenging.Any assistance for a ditto situation there ?
