With Spring in the air, it's time for the wildlife in Woodlands Park to go through the annual process of regeneration. The birds, especially the parrots, will nurture their new chicks. The pigeons, including the native wood pigeons, will be adding to Australia's birdlife. It's easy to spot the native pigeons, they have a distinctive crest. Some ducks are feral, some are not, it's not always easy to pick them. By the way, please don't feed the birds bread, it's bad for their digestion.

As part of the upgrade of Woodlands Park, the City of Moonee Valley is harvesting storm water, and redirecting it to the ponds, which might otherwise be stagnant and lifeless. The ponds, which have been revegetated, are now healthy wet lands which harbor a variety of native wildlife, including aquatic birds. The ducks and black swans make for a variety of birds. By the way, please don't feed the birds bread, it is harmful to their digestion.

The upgrading of Woodlands Park was completed in August 2020, following the City of Moonee Valley's Master Plan. The plan includes stormwater harvesting, which will feed healthy water into Moonee Valley Creek and Five Mile Creek. When the weather is fine, the rotundas and BBQs are popular, as is the playground. The lakes attract aquatic birds; I saw a pair of Black Swans there the other day. By the way, there are now permanent toilets in the park.

The recent rains have greened the lawns, filled the ponds, and set the reeds in flower. There is not a lot of bird life around, except for the Ravens, but the playground is getting good use from those children not yet in school. The rotundas are offering good shade from the hot Summer sun.

Woodlands Park has completed its renewal. The aquatic birds are taking advantage of the restored lake. The ducks are numerous, as are the pigeons. Silver Gulls can often be seen, even though the park is distant from Port Phillip Bay. Pink and Grey Gallahs and Little Corellas are common. Woodlands Park is a good place to do some birdwatching.

Adequate rainfall means that the foliage in Woodland Park is growing apace. The replanted reeds in the ponds have taken hold, providing shelter for native birdlife, including ducks. Other wildlife is taking advantage of the expanded habitat, including native parrots. Also, pigeons can be seen grazing on the lawn. Some pigeons are ferral birds and others are native wood pigeons. The occasional visiting seagull can be seen, Many of the old-growth trees have holes that will provide nesting hollows. As the cold weather abates, we can expect growth in spring.

Wildlife is returning to Woodlands Park. Flocks of Little Corellas, which Australians call "cockies" can be seen grazing on the grass, as can ducks. The distinctive black-and-white magpies are common. Turtles have returned. Visitors are reminded, by primary school artists, not to feed the birds with bread. The reeds are thick and the old-growth trees look sturdy. In all, Woodlands park is returning to life and the wildlife is flourishing, with new varieties of frogs to be added soon.

The upgraded park has quite a few bench seats, a good playground, and some useful shelters for BBQs and picnics. There are wide well made paths for walking and cycling and the ponds have been remade. The lawns are expansive and water for drinking is available. There are many trees, so finding shelter from the Summer sun is possible.
