There's so much to love about Carova Beach in the off-season. We were there for the 2023 spring break with our teens and our dog, staying near MP 22. The wild horses were our favorite part, but we also liked that we often had the beach to ourselves. It's rugged and wild up there, but we like that there's no carnival, no putt putt, no kitsch or brew-through place -- just sand, salt, sun and wildflowers. We can often find plenty of driftwood, whole shells, mermaid's purses and whelk egg sacs. It's a joy to take long walks on the unpaved roads. Drive up a bit to the border, and you will find some great hiking spots just beyond in the Virginia state park. Or, take a picnic to the local park, which overlooks the canals, and let your kids play. Just a magical, sun-drenched refuge from all the chaos of modern life -- with good Verizon mobile service, because the tower is in the backyard of the Carova Beach Fire Department. Soon, the spring foals will be born, and there will be even more in which to delight.

Honestly if I have to share the beach with cars driving by I might as well sit on the street corner. Not a beach for my family looking for nature and quiet.
And the beach access is leading to massive erosion.

Imagine how exciting it was to return to OBX after surviving the pandemic only to spend a lot of money to rent a dump on Carova Beach. Avoid Sea What Happens handled by Twiddy Realty — nothing will be done to address the list of over 25 condition issues (the busted, out of order fridge pictured was visible as you entered the house … what original décor) except wait 4-6 weeks for a resolution because that’s their policy at a time when Tourism is begging for business during a time of hyperinflation.
The horses are stunning except for the tour groups hounding the herds along the beaches. This stallion was grazing near the house.

Carova is awesome, and it is even better when you have a great house to stay at. I love the Twin Shores Carova beach…the ocean and the sound have wonderful views. The wild horses are amazing!

This was our first trip to the 4x4 beaches and we loved it! Beaches were beautiful and it was awesome seeing the horses! Only complaint is people fishing the shoreline a little too closely to other families that are playing in the water. Also there were some idiots letting off fireworks on the beach one night, despite the multiple signs that it is illegal - risk of fire and scaring/harming the wild horses - just disrespectful. Kids got a kick out of the random discarded bumpers and other car parts left along the beach from those who chose to drive the beaches not properly equipped. We'll definitely be back, this was a great beach vacation!

The beach was great but I want to caution readers against doing business with Beach Realty and specifically regarding renting Between the Buoys property. We rented Between the Buoys for Thanksgiving week and paid a premium, which would have been fine EXCEPT, the wifi was not working, one toilet not working, grill not working, half the remotes with no batteries, half the light bulbs burned out. We called on Tuesday morning (had arrived Monday afternoon). And called Tuesday afternoon. And called Tuesday evening. No one EVER called back. Was able to make direct contact with owner through facebook and got Wifi resolved. Tried to call office again on Friday-closed holiday. When we got home I called on Monday. Didn't finally speak to someone until Tuesday and they are pretty much telling me that they are not responsible because the maintenance is outsourced by the owner. The owner is blaming his maintenance company. No one seems to care that we paid a PRIMO rate for a holiday week and the experience was sub par. All they will do is offer a discount on a RETURN booking, which I would have gotten anyway according to the listing. So I do NOT recommend this business, and I do NOT recommend Between the Buoys. The place was dirty-trash all under the house and by the pool and under the steps and they charge a premium. For the property and the service-it is far from worth it.

I would vacation at Carova again, but only with a group of friends. We stayed in a house on the beach in the off season last week for a group family vacation with a 2 year old and a dog. The beach is really nice and it's really convenient that you can bring your truck with all of your supplies right onto the beach. The only thing we did not like was that you have to park in the middle of the beach and trucks go flying past you on both sides. It seems the tourists tend to drive the speed limit behind the parked cars while the locals speed as close as they can to people out on the beach. It was very dangerous with a toddler and a dog. At one point a local stopped to yell at us for having chairs set up in his way. There is plenty of space to go around during low tide, but he threatened to tell his buddy the sheriff. He also told us that he could legally run us over if we were sunbathing on the beach. I just don't get the locals' hate for tourists on this beach.

I was a bit skeptical about my first trip to the 4X4 area of the Outer Banks. I was concerned about traffic on the beach and how the vibe would feel with cars driving around us while we were out on the beach with children.
I am happy to say that the beach is absolutely incredible. The experience of driving on the beach is unlike any other vacation. It was so convenient to roll right up to the beach with everything you need. Even when we stay in oceanfront condos and houses, we still have to gather up the chairs and cooler and carry them over the dunes through an access point. This trip, we could throw everything in the truck and just pull right up to the water. You absolutely do need a 4-wheel drive vehicle to drive in the sand, and make sure you have good ground clearance. I recommend watching videos online about driving on the beach. We did prior to leaving, and they are very helpful.
The beach isn't crowded, and you can have just about as much space as you need. In fact, we played a baseball game right in the middle of the beach and had plenty of space. There were times that it felt like we were on our own private beach.
Most of the houses were quite a distance from the nearest town. I think we drove about 30 minutes to go to dinner. So, make sure that you are stocked up because there is no convenient "running down to the store" to grab something. The Fire Department for the beach does sell bags of ice if you need a refill, but they were $3 per bag and there were limits to how much you could buy. At one point, they allowed only 1 bag per household, so if you're staying with a group, ice becomes a hot commodity. I would recommend taking a large heavy duty cooler that will hold ice for the duration of the trip, and stocking it up at a local store before you leave town and head out to 4X4 beach.
People from the beach towns pay top dollar for tours to the 4X4 area to see wild horses. We saw them every single day. On morning one, there were four horses grazing in our front yard. They continued to visit throughout the week, and at one point, one was standing on our back porch. I'm not a horse lover, but it
was cool to see them wandering
around and the kids loved it.
I've been to beaches up and down the East Coast for the past 20 years, and
honestly, this beach is the best. If
you are on the fence, do it. You
won't be disappointed.

Corova Beach is unspoiled without a carnival atmosphere ruining the wildness of it. Calm, beautiful!

This is by far our favorite family vacation destination we have experienced! We loved driving on the beach, watching the dolphins in the mornings and early evenings, and seeing the horses graze.

Id like to meet my family at Caribs beach but hate to ask them to drive to Corolla to meet me. Are there taxis or tour companies who will drop you off about 3-4 miles up the beach?

We are traveling to Carova to stay for the week with several other family members. They have 4x4 vehicles and we do not. Last year the realty company we used had a place to park our non 4x4 vehicles and this year my sister rented from someone who does not offer parking. Where can we park our car for the week? I am sure we will have to pay I am just not sure where to park or how to find it. The only threads I can find are very old. Thanks!

Questionable depending how far back this road is....on the beach you should have no problem but when you go off the beach the sand can be unforgiving. We have had trouble in our four wheel drive truck with the loose sand and steep hills. We just returned from OBX ocean sands area and the beach still was not cleaned up from the storms. Lots of wood debris on the beach still.

Best place to see wild horses in own vehicle?

We had no trouble finding the horses among the houses behind the dunes. As another response says be careful of the water holes as some are quite deep and will swamp your vehicle. A 4wheel drive is a must. If you are staying on the beach you have no worries about seeing the horses as early in the morning you will see them in your front (or back) yard and on the dunes. Also remember you are not allowed within 50 feet of them and yes there are horse police!

You might pose this question to Corolla Outback Adventures. They would know. Look up the phone number and give them a call.
We are renting a house on Carova Beach in October and wondered if we could do some clamming? I see info for other beaches but not Carova. Any advice would be appreciated.

I would doubt it. The beach is protected due to the wild horses. I would imagine there is a restriction on the water access as well. I would check with NC Wildlife Resources Commission 888-247-6834.

My husband and I, along with a few friends are coming to stay the first week in October, our first time to Corolla, can anyone tell me what the weather is like around that time please? I'm worried about the kids not being able to play in the ocean because it may be too cold... thanks in advance!

You should do just fine. We have been going in October for about 40 years and it is the weather, not the water temperature that we have to watch out for.
