A long journey from Lincolnshire to Neath needed a break on the way and so after a little research we chose Avoncroft and were not disappointed.
During the research it was apparent that we needed to book a time slot and arrived a little before schedule. Not a problem and after the usual Covid niceties we started our tour.
At the time there was probably only about 6 other family groups and so had no problem moving around and taking photos. The museum is well laid out with some amazing buildings. I think my favourite is probably the windmill but in reality I also really like toll houses.
One of the great things is the signage by each building with a history of who lived there, the history of the building itself and the rescue to Avoncroft. My Australian sister in law would have been in her element reading the notes.
As you come out of the ticket office/ shop there is the national collection of phone boxes, who would have guessed there was such a thing or how interesting a phone box is?
The tearoom was applying Covid restrictions and so seating was outside with a lovely Franklin’s apple and rhubarb drink and blackberry crumble cake, are you salivating yet? It was delicious.
A favourite moment, not a building but a lady with probably her grandchild who looked in a doorway and said to her “look a high chair “ Then immediately realised it was a privy 😂
It is only £12 each for adults to go in and there is lots for all ages there.
Highly recommended.

Avoncroft museum is getting more and more notice and good for them. It's a wonderful huge area of land housing restored historical buildings oozing with charm and stories. The museum also holds the ever popular telephone kiosk museum and a real original police 8

They are passionate about saving old buildings and the volunteers are always there to help.

Fancy a coffee and cake, then you can't go wrong with the Victorian tea rooms located near the entrance.

Ideal for families, couples or even on your own. Perfect.

My husband saw that this had re-opened after lockdown, and as regular museum visitors we were excited to be paying our first visit to Avoncroft. He paid for two adult tickets, booked our slot and we set off.
I'm sure it would have been great. I liked looking at the telephone boxes. Problem was, hardly anything other than the odd farm building was actually open. In most cases it wasn't even possible to peer through the windows, as so much of it was firmly padlocked and shuttered.
At £24, this was a very expensive walk around some farm buildings, which we can do for nothing at home. It wasn't worth the hour's drive and we'd have appreciated a heads-up about the closure of most buildings prior to booking.

I am a regular visitor- but what has happened to the tea room?
It’ s been reorganised so that its impossible to get food, especially with children or anyone disabled.
A sort of self help ‘ system’ - you have to take heavy glass domes off cakes( we didn’t bother) with nowhere to balance plates/ tray. and worst of all there were hot soup pots by the door in easy reach of toddlers. It all resulted in a melee of cross people.
Just let the staff serve the customers as usual. The staff are lovely and deserve better.
Visitors deserve much better.
And £3 plus for Marmite on toast?
I don’t think so!

Great opportunity to see a variety of buildings from the Middle Ages through to modern day. See how they were built, what life was like. Kids can join in with related activities. They hold special events at times and if you can get in on these, it boosts your experience for the day.

In the middle of Storm Dennis, we received a warm welcome from the museum staff who went out of their way to be helpful. The buildings are beautifully maintained and presented, with lots of information and often authentically furnished. In the driving rain, the Edwardian tea room was a haven.... friendly staff, fantastic cakes and the best leek and potato soup we have tasted. Thanks for a fantastic visit. We’ll be back!

I was taken here for a surprise birthday treat. I had never been before and had never heard of the place. I am interested in history and industrial archaeology and I have to say this place was fascinating! Loved my visit and the buildings were incredible. Playing in the phone booths with my friends was a particular highlight.

We loved our trip. It was a busy day but we had a great day exploring. I originally visited when I was in school and the return was just as good. I would recommend packing a picnic as the tea room gets really busy in peak season plus there are lots of nice grassed areas to relax. By the windmill is great. If you phone up in advanced they will tell you the days that it is actually working. I think it is one Sunday a month.

This was my second visit to this wonderful site...my first being around 20 years ago, when my children were quite young. Today I visited with my oldest son.

We spent 3 hours looking at, and sometimes wondering through, a great variety of buildings, from stables to a Tudor house, from a blacksmith's workshop to a post war prefabricated home, a toll house to a windmill, spread over a pretty site in this rural landscape. There is a great collection of telephone boxes...some one could use with old pennies (provided) to call other boxes. Each exhibit had its own information board, so plenty to learn. There's also a lovely miniature railway set up, but it's only open for the public to enjoy rides every Tuesday throughout the Summer months.

After our wander, we called into the onsite tea shop, but we're sadly disappointed by very weak tea (I had to request more tea leaves), the disappointment that contrary to the menu, there was no hot food at all available, and worst of all, service was extraordinarily slow...my son ordered a coffee and ham sandwich, while I ordered a scone and tea. Not only were we compelled to wait half an hour for it to arrive, but when my son inquired about the progress of our order, there was no apology...and two couples who had ordered food after us, were served before us! Very poor service by girls who clearly required better customer service training, better manners, and better management. The only complaint after a friendly welcome from the receptionist, and an otherwise pleasing and informative visit.

I would certainly visit again, but probably not the tea room!
