A UNESCO world heritage site where rock cave paintings from paleolithic and historic times are still visible and well-kept. The rock shelters are picturesque, and the whole process of finding the paintings on the cave walls was like a treasure hunt for kids. Some paintings are so clear as if they were done recently.
A nice place to visit overall.

Washing rooms and drinking water are available at the entrance of the complex. However, the place is away from the city. The nearest restaurant is a MP tourism retreat (the food of which is really good), otherwise there aren't many options. So, stay well-stocked with food if travelling with kids.

Must visit ! The only place in India to see 35000 years old rock painting!! Well maintained by ASI but there is no tourist facilities nearby. Carry water and basic snacks. You will need 2 hours to cover 15 caves. Well connected from Bhopal.

The Bhimbetka caves are located in the Vindhyachal ranges near Obidullahganj in Raisen District and are 45 Kms. from Bhopal. The caves hold a treasure of the art work done by the Pre-historic man when he lived in these Rock shelters.Fifteen such caves are open for public viewing and are in a green forest area with the inter-connecting tracks well built for walking convenience by the Archeological Deptt..With Time the paintings have become dull and difficult in viewing.I had been here in 1988 but then at that time the paintings were clear and pronounced. Anyway these have gone through several centuries transcending the recorded history of human dwellings and are a treat for the eyes.Very aged persons should avoid visit here as you have to walk on foot for a pretty good distance. One more thing - the Forest Deptt. imposes an 'entry fee' in name of entry to the Ratapani Sanctuary ( about 7 kms. prior to the caves ) - for car it is Rs. 150/- but what facility they give in return is not understood.

If you have not visited the Bhimbetka Caves in MP , you have missed a rare historic treasure of India. These cave shelter paintings have prehistoric paintings as old as 30,000 years. It also has cave paintings in yellow , green , white and ochre colours etched on the cave walls. All colours used are natural. The guide told us since these paintings have been sheltered from rain and rough weather, they could survive over the years. Mainly the figures drawn were animals.
These naturally carved rocks are surrounded by beautiful flora and fauna and it’s so peaceful around with chirping of birds almost an ideal place for meditation.
These caves are a UNESCO World Heritage site and well looked after by people manning them and a deterrent to vandalism by some who do anything to pose for selfies.
The name Bhimbetka is derived from Mahabharata. It is said that Bhim used to sit here in the time of exile.
These caves were shrouded in jungle and only in 1956-57 , it was Dr Vishnu Wakankar who found them .

Bhimbetka is about an hour and a half drive from Bhopal .. the entry fee is INR 50 per person and then you drive up and park your car right up to the place where the rock shelters start.. only 15 rock shelters are open to public but they are majestic and there is a description of paintings in each of the rock shelters.. they are absolutely a treat to watch and are a wow experience.

A big disappointment. On reaching the entry point, after hiring a cab to reach there for ₹2000, I realised that to take my cab in I have to pay ₹2500/- as entry!!
How stupid! The other option was walk 2.5 kms uphill and then 2.5 kms down. Our group had people who were 60. I need not say more.
So basically senior citizens, and people with any health problems will not be able to visit this place.
Finally the caves have a few prehistoric paintings but really not worth the visit at this cost.
The ordeal consists of a three to four hrs drive (to and fro) on a bad bumpy road and a cost of at least 4500/-. Very poor value for money ratio.
Unless costs are rolled back to entry for car of 300/- absolutely avoid this place.

These caves are in a forested area. The rocks are imposing. Used as shelters in ancient times, most of them have art that depicts the lives of the people who lived here over millennia. Most of the paintings are monochromatic...either in red or white.
The walkway to the caves is well paved.
As no explanation of the art is available on the site, one must take a guide who can help one understand the paintings and the eras in which they were painted on the rock walls. Some are in layers the finer nuances of which can be best brought out by a guide.

It's around 1 hour 30 minutes ride from Bhopal.. It will take around 45 minutes to see the place.. So half day trip is good.

If you are far from here, and won't be visiting again, then it is better to avail a guide so that you won't be missing anything. Some painting we might miss it, but the guides will show us.

Carry water and snacks.. Old persons can also come as long as they don't mind walking..
