A fascinating space and a wonderful insight into the creative world of Brett Whiteley.
This former warehouse was both home and working studio for Whiteley from 1987 - 1992. Left untouched after his death, the upstairs level includes unfinished works, paints, brushes and all sorts of painting tools.
Drips and splashes of paint mark the floorboards and one wall is covered in handwritten quotes and images and scribbled musings. He filled his space with assorted and seemingly random odds and ends that caught his eye and inspired him - shells, seed pods, binoculars, books, a cricket ball. If you have any interest in the artistic process, it’s a must.
Downstairs is more like a conventional gallery and is currently displaying an exhibition ‘Chapters 1959–69’, a collection of his works made between the ages of 20 and 30, a period of intense travel and artistic experimentation. It includes his disturbing Christie works, the London Zoo works as well as paintings from his time in New York and Fiji.
It’s not a big gallery so you probably only need to allow an hour. However the exhibitions change from time to time so it’s worth a repeat visit.
Staff were very helpful. They gave us a brief introduction and were on hand to give more information whenever needed.
The studio is a little out of the way, in a small back street in Surry Hills. We walked from Central Station and it took about 15 minutes. Even when we arrived, we didn’t spot the building immediately because it is an unobtrusive, plain brown colour.
NOTE: Entry is free and there’s no need to book ahead. However it is only open Thursday - Sunday.

What a cultural treasure this gallery is. Wonderful visit, staff were very engaged in me having a good experience. To see the work there and the space he had actually worked in is very soecial.

Situated in the back streets of Surry Hills, this gallery is worth finding. It is only opened Thursday-Sunday and closes at 4pm. The top floor is Brett’s last studio and they have left everything as if he could walk in at any minute. It is an amazing way to see a snippet into his life and to see who he actually knew. Downstairs is a number of Brett’s artwork and to see them up close is special. The best thing is it is totally free. If you like your art and want to check out one of Australia’s best artists do find time to visit.

On our second of 6 days in Sydney, we'd had a very good lunch at Bills in Surrey Hills and were looking for something to fill in time before dinner later at Jane restaurant. The gallery is small but well worth the time spent looking at the artworks etc (45 minutes is plenty) . Surprisingly, there is no admission charge. I can sort of understand the whole volunteer thing but, for me, a charge might provide the funds for more detailed descriptions of each of the magnificent works rather than just the name and a date. Anyway, it was good and we enjoyed the "Blue and White" exhibition. Just inside the door is the enormous mural "Alchemy". Quite confronting in some ways, it was vaguely familiar and, thanks to Google, I found out why - the cover of the Dire Straits album of the same name came from the painting.
It's a small gallery and, being a Thursday afternoon, was, thankfully, very quiet. I think it would be awful to be there on a busy weekend. A crowd would stuff it up.

This smaller Sydney gallery space never disappoints. It showcases works by the artist, whose diverse materials and techniques include painting, drawing, sculpture, mixed media and printmaking. The upstairs studio space has been preserved, so visitors can get a sense of some of Whitely's passions and influences as well as his studio set-up and practice. Exhibitions change yearly, sometimes more frequently, and are curated around the artist's major preoccupations and themes. Currently, Whiteley's love of his home and its setting in Sydney's Lavender Bay with its views across the harbour and lush maritime environment are on display. For people with an interest in art, Whitely's Studio is an absolute gem and a must.

Tucked away in a quite Surry Hills back street not far from the CBD is this remarkable gallery/studio in a old warehouse. Such a wonderful glimpse at the life of the genius that is Brett W. So good.

Small intimate gallery space on the ground floor with a changing exhibition of Brett Whiteley's work every 6 months or so. The upper lever has a small exhibition space and Whiteley's art studio. Well worth a visit or 2!

This one has been on the brides bucket list for a while, and after an overnighter in the city, we headed down to Surry Hills on Saturday morning and arrived just after opening (10am). The exhibition was displayed beautifully in Whitley’s old space, with lots of great info with each work. Upstairs in Brett’s old residence and studio is where the real gems are, with excellent studio expert Alec engaging with us and providing some wonderful insights into Brett, Wendy and the way they continue to keep this most important Australian artist relevant well done Alex, was great to meet you and you added so much to our visit, thank you). The bride also bought a stunning Whitely book from the gift shop she had been searching for; made even better it was bought from the source. We are heading to Europe next year and I was telling the bride I’m super keen to do the musicians tour of London, Denmark St, The 100 Club etc, and she said “why don’t we do more of that at home”... so this was a perfect kick start to that. Free entry and a great way to soak up some of our own history. Highly recommended!!

My wife and I love art, and attending a special exhibition in a major city frequently determines the travel choices we make. The Brett Whiteley Studio was mentioned in Lonely Planet, so we thought we'd check it out as we'd never heard of this artist. The studio is open 3 days a week currently (Fri-Sun), but it's well worth the effort to visit. We really enjoyed the art, and loved discovering a very talented artist who, unfortunately, died much too young. The staff were very helpful answering our questions about the artist, and there are some videos that you can watch which provide biographical information.
Also, you can see one of Brett Whiteley's large format paintings in the Art Gallery of New South Wales too.
In sum, this is a worthwhile way to spend a couple of hours for travelers who also love art and painting.
