Nothing....nothing can quite prepare you for a trip to Stanway House, it's truly like no other we've visited. Open on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons only (2-5pm), it is an exquisite example of a Cotswold manor house, in fabulous grounds & very much still lived in... and here lies its unique quality. The private rooms look as if its occupants vacated in a hurry 5x minutes before opening time, with beds ruffled, bottles of water on tables, and in the bathroom even a shampoo bottle stands jauntily abandoned hinting at a very rapid exit. We imagined the owner hauled up in the potting-shed until closing time. If you're lucky, you'll witness the awesome gravity-fed fountain working in the grounds, with its perfect backdrop (check for times). The house is beautifully furnished with treasures and with tatty, totally threadbare carpets throughout, there is an authenticity to this place that may appal some, but we found it thoroughly engaging if not funny, it's NOT a museum. The motionless, ancient stewards stationed in each room, keeping a beady-eye on the visiting plebs are as decrepit as the interiors, this is the stuff of sitcoms. We thoroughly recommend a visit, and have not stopped smirking since we left, brilliant!..

Had a lovely visit to this beautiful place today, we are very grateful to have been allowed to experience someone’s beautiful old family home. The house is lovely, very calm with some good examples of classic furniture and William Morris wallpaper.
The grounds were particularly welcoming on this very hot day( lots of shade) and the fountain impressive. Lots of children enjoying playing in the spray.
We enjoyed seeing the watermill at work and had a lovely cream tea from the cafe, sitting out by the pond adjacent to the tythe barn.
A visit to treasure!

On a perfect summers day what better to visit an exceptional and still privately lived in Jacobean house. Some note its shabbiness I would prefer to focus on its tranquility and the fact that it is very much a family house, this is no Insta -ready house but an honest home. We were so pleased that we could take our dog not only to the grounds but around the house ( at Sudeley you can’t even take a dog into the grounds) and the guides were friendly and helpful. The water mill is delightful, the fountain of course terrific fun. A very reasonable tea and scone with jam and cream served by lovely people. As members of Historic Houses we could get in ‘free’ but even if you paid the £11 entry more than value for money

Not worth the money. Literally just a very tall water fountain, not anything else, other than a slow mooch around the ground. Waited for the second fountain to start at 4 and never came on, waited 10 mins. So only ended up seeing it once at 2.

The fountain is spectacular, the house stunning and the water mill worth a visit. Buy some flour from the mill and then treat yourself to some lovely cake at their tea-shop. The swans are currently guarding their young by the small lake as you arrive so be careful. A bit of a challenge for those in wheelchairs but most old houses / estates are.

Unfortunately the whole trip was marred by unapologetic rudeness and even a kind of sadistic glee in being so rude. Twice. By same person
I continued to laugh as if it was a joke for sake of my family but I was so very saddened hurt and insulted to have invited my family, payed £30 entrance just to see the garden amd fountain, and £30 on 4 slices of cake and 1 pot of tea for us all.
So I spent £60 on two hours for garden and cake. The Swans were aggressive and unpleasant...the man who spoke to me passive aggressive and unpleasant . Perfect match. The two us because my family are fun to be with and I liked to see them smile...but then we get that in the local parks for free with more easy going swans and people in them
He ruined a pleasant if extortionate visit. ..right at the very end

We live very locally and having never visited before but thought we would take visiting family to see the fountain as we had heard it was supposed to be spectacular. Well sadly we didn’t get to see it! We visited on an open day run by the National Garden Society and the fountain was billed as due to ‘go off’ at 4.00pm but it never happened. Everyone was very disappointed.

Before visiting you might be interested in the fact that the North Cotswold Hunt met there on Saturday 9th March 2024 for their closing meet. If you are OK with hunts terrorising the local wildlife then thats OK but by going here you support this activity.

Live locally but had never visited until we went in June. It did not disappoint and has been one of my fave days out this summer. It was a warm, sunny afternoon. Beautiful house, which has been used in a lot of filming. The Watermill was fun, and the fountain was a delight to see! We had visited the fete the previous year and seen the foundation going then but had never been around the house or Watermill. It was such a lovely afternoon. We also enjoyed tea and cake by the pond. Beautiful!
Oh, one thing was cash only, but that was no problem.

God, the kids loved this! Spectacular fountain gets wind-blown throwing a heavy wet mist over all the shrieking, dancing children. Take swimming costumes and towels!
