It's a scenic pass. Very beautiful road and every turn brings a new scenery. You have to choose the right time though. When we drove from Kaikoura to Greymouth via Hanmer Springs, it seems the area had severe draught. I'm sure when it snows or rains, it must be very beautiful. We felt bit sad that the farmers had to water the fields so that cows and sheep could graze.

This was a good place to break our journey from Murchison to Christchurch, which is largely through magnificent mountain scenery. At the top of the Lewis Pass there is a small tarn, and a lovely loop walk of about 20 minutes through an alpine wetland, with views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Well worth your time.

Absolutely love driving through Lewis Pass. It is very scenic, and the road is in good condition.
Call into Hanmer Springs, Maruia Hot Spings, Reefton and do one of the many walks on offer through the Pass.
I have stayed in accommodation (motel, rooms etc) and Doc Campsites along Lewis Pass on different trips and have loved each time I've travelled through this part of NZ. Beautiful part of NZ.

We drove up here for a look around from Hamner Springs. The drive it’s self is easy and the views are great.
At Lewis pass itself there are some good views, and a short walking track. Very glad we made the effort

Drove through here 2 times in last week and a half, Stunning, every time u see something new, watch out for stupid drivers, plenty of rest areas and pull over bays. if any in family get car sick, have some meds as its a windy road

Cannot recommend this drive highly enough although the weather will have considerable influence on whether you can actually do this drive in Winter. We missed one of the worse cold snaps by a mere two days but what we saw, will last a life time. The roads are excellent from Christchurch to Greymouth but due to the earthquake damage on the Kaikoura Coast, lorries and heavy vehicles also use it and they clearly have a time schedule! The trip is scheduled to take 3-4hrs. We took 6hrs simply due to the number of stop offs and photo opportunities. A scenic drive through some stunning locations and from someone who grew up here, a reminder of just how beautiful this country really is. The stop offs are frequent and don't be afraid to pullover into bays to get that postcard shot. Keep an eye out for St James's walkway. There's a short walk to the lake and it is stunning (there's also a two day walk, so be warned).

Absolutely stunning this time of year and not much traffic aswell so u can enjoy the scenery. A few bits of roadworks but it’s fine if u get the chance visit the amazing natural beauty of NZ

We have done Arthur's pass before, and this was on our list to do, as it was just there! We quite had our breath taken away with this beautiful scenic drive.we had booked a site at Westport so we were not in a rush and just took everything that nature had to show us.

Was on a around South Island motorcycle trip.
This is beautiful country to tide through.
The road has been fixed nicely.
No rain and was a clear sunny day.
Take your time and take in the scenery and views.

This is a stunning drive through mountain scenery. It can be dicky weatherwise in winter and early spring, so always check the advisories - AA or LTSA will help you here - to update you on any hazards such as ice, snow, road works etc.
The thing I like about it most is the severe and obvious demarcation of the divide. One minute you're driving through tussock and alpine meadow, the next you're in beech forest and most obviously on the West Coast.
Leave plenty of room in your schedule to take your time because it's beautiful but can also be treacherous given the right conditions.
Make sure to fill your petrol tank before leaving Hanmer or Murchison as Springs Junction is the only filling station and isn't open all the time. Although I must say that we've had occasion in the distant past to knock on the petrol station owners door to ask for emergency supplies. And it was service with a smile...… but that was a long time ago. So don't rely on it now.
