When a local told me that there was diving and snorkeling here, I thought they were having a laugh. It is a river after all, a busy shipping river with bad tides - how could that be good diving?
Well it is true. Difficult to find details about online, google maps will not always get you there unless you know where you are going, but true. If you are diving without gear, there are a number of dive shops in the area, or even in Brisbane who dive at this spot.
If you have the gear you want to head to Jack Evens Boat Harbour on Coral st. There is a little jetty people fish off and to the side of it you will see people going in to dive and snorkel. You can head along the wall toward the river opening and end up in a shallow sandy swimming beach, an easy area. If you are less confident, you can start in the large shallow lagoon. There is less to see in the lagoon but it would be good for building the confidence of an uncertain snorkeler.
On the rocks you can see a very decent range of fish and if you are lucky, an octopus.
Not a spectacular site, subtropical rather than amazing, but quite nice and very easy to access. If you want a regular swim there is the lagoon, if you want a lazy walk you can park and meander around the point out to Duranbah beach to watch surfers.

If you know a local (like we did as tourists) and they offer to take you up the tweed river, then say yes! Beautiful!
We had a lovely afternoon fishing and were spoiled with dolphins on our return trip to the boat ramp! Lovely adventure for everyone.

We rented a small houseboat from this two boat show based out of Tumbulgum in northern NSW. The owners could not have been more helpful or friendlier. The boat is not spanking new but has everything you need. We fished and relaxed on the Tweed River between Chinderah and Tumbulgum for four days, they even let us bring the pooch. It was heaven, the boat was easy to operate and comfortable for 2. We were the only houseboat not there for partying it seems, it was such a relaxing break.

This area is still very nice, although you are close to a very large city,there is a lot of wonderful wildlife. We hired a houseboat and went up river. The water was clean and clear. In the mornings you could see the bottom around 6 meters, it was like a fish tank, with stingrays, brim and bate fish. When you hire your fishing license is excluded. Remember NSW has fishing rules and it is your responsibility to know these laws. Our surgestion is dich the city lights and go on the river.

Good local art gallery and the new extension was interesting even if I didn't know the artist. They have a sister restaurant in the hills which has better food than the cafe.

We had been keen to go on a Tweed River cruise for some time, and were particularly interested in the historical commentary advertised as the river has a highly interesting past. We booked on to the River and Rainforest Tour. Half an hour after our expected departure time we were finally underway. The captain began his sparse commentary, asking us to note the cars that had been driven into the river. He informed us all that on a good day we may be able to see them submerged in the water. Despite the very interesting local history of this river, the commentary was sadly lacking, decidedly bland and frankly rather embarassing for the visitors sitting near us who were clearly also disappointed. When we reached Tymbalgum we were told to wait by the bus to be taken back to Tweed. 40 minutes later a group of about 8 were still waiting to be transported back to Tweed. An exasperated tourist finally went to find the driver who was enjoying a coke and a chat on the boat. Significant room for improvement - don't waste your money on this tour.

At the Tweed, and heading by car into the hills to go to the Tweed River Regional Art Gallery, We've been there before and we will go again. The Gallery itself is beautiful and the exhibitions are always very interesting. The curator at the gallery does a great job.
Always a wide variety of work and a good cafe and breathtaking views.
The drive to the gallery is lovely too, past the Tweed River through the cane fields and after the gallery you can drive to the many small towns in the area.
