The GVRT is an amazing journey. I completed the rail trail on a bike. The small towns I visited were warm accomodating and friendly. The trail itself is well maintained with stunning views of the county side. I started at Tallarook and finished at Mansfield. I used Black Alpine shuttle To shuttle back to the start. The staff were excellent to deal with. They looked after my bike and the whole service was very professional along with great local knowledge of the rail trail. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We cycled the Great Victorian Rail Trail with friends and we had a great time. We booked with Tour de Vines and their service was first class. The accommodation was very good, and the dining options at the various stops were equally fine.
This trip included four days of cycling. The first day from Mansfield to Bonnie Doon was 22km. Bonnie Doon to Alexandra 59km. The next day to Yea was about 39km and the final day to Tallapoosa was 39km. The trail is well sign posted and well maintained. This is an easy ride on an e-bike.
The countryside is stunning and the subtle changes in scenery are beautiful. Once we departed our overnight stop, there was not a lot of things to visit. This meant that we were at our overnight stop about mid afternoon, which allowed us time to explore the local township.
This was a wonderful and unhurried holiday. We would gladly book with Tour de Vines again.

Road the Tullarook to Yea return approx 80km on ebikes.
More uphill on the ride to Yea, return was not as hilly back.
Well signed the surface was compacted gravel rail trail, although you could see signs of riders riding in the wet creating furrows try to avoid if possible.
Great time of year as Autumn leaves changing color, open paddocks tree lined with Goulburn River along some sections, a few road crossings. Great Bakery at Yea the ebikes took the edge of the hills about 2 hours each way and allow an hour stop.over at Yea for lunch and a break to have a look around.
Our next section will be Yea to Alexandria about 37km each way, with the final section will be either Mansfield to Alexandra or reverse 40 to 50km.
The total ride including the Alexandria section is around 150km.
But if you consider doing it in three sections, can do as day trips rather than overnight stopovers if preferred.
Recommend ebikes as our batteries last about 90 to 100 km on the lower power cycle assistance from full charge.
A great ride enjoy.

I didn't actually ride this... I only walked part of the way... the best part of the Victorian Rail Trail is that the paths are wide and you feel safe as you walk... all you need to do is step aside for bikes passing... and if there is only one bike, you can pass one another quite easily.
The trails always take you through beautiful natural scenery with quirks, signs and points of interest along the way.
An interesting fact is that the first railway that opened in the world was in 1845...but it was 1872 that it arrived in this area. It was in 1978 that the line to Mansfield/Alexandra closes . All of these changes in our history attribute to the rail trail's existence now.

What a well maintained track. The landscape was stunning. A few less options to buy along the way, but packed some local produce and your set for a great few days. We picked up ebikes from Mansfield, did 86km to Yea- overnighted and 39kms into Tallarook. Nigel then bused us and our bikes back to drop off the bikes and jump in our car.

We had long anticipated our visit to the Mansfield area to try out our new gravel bikes, having been thwarted once by a Covid lockdown! So with Easter approaching we made a run for it. But boy, we’re we disappointed! We did three sections between Mansfield and Merton but apart from the trail there was nothing on offer- not a cafe, produce stop, winery, nothing! Perhaps closer to Yea and Tallarook there maybe something to stop for, but this section pretty dull. We enjoyed crossing the bridge at Bonnie Doon, but apart from the pub it’s hard to know if there is anything else. There certainly weren’t any signs suggesting it! I’m hoping the Gippsland trail offers a little more.

My review is mainly for the Bonnie Doon to Mansfield section (22k). The path has small stones (blue metal?) but there’s a smooth line for the front tyre. I rode 35” tyres on a Surly tourer, no probs. Wouldn’t recommend for a 23” roadie. Beautiful old red gums and rich pastoral land abound. Parts reminded me of the Meseta on the Camino to Santiago. Also did the section from Alexandra to Spring Creek Rd turnoff (i took this Rd to Bonnie Doon). Also a nice experience. Thanks to the track volunteers who’ve made it possible for bikers, walkers and horse riders to enjoy this part of Vic in peace.

Tried a short section of the trail on my road bike on a rainy day. Planning to some back once the trail has dried out with my gravel bike.

My wife and I rode this on our road bikes, but we were used to crushed granite/quartz sand surfaces and found this very rough and tough on our bodies & bikes. 4 punctures ensued. We planned riding from Tallarook to Bonnie Doon & back (225 km), but had to cut it short before Merton because of time & spare tubes. There are plenty of towns to stop, so I can't see water or food being a problem at any point along the way for other visitors. There were quite a few road crossings along the very busy GV road which was really the only low-light.
The countryside was very nice, even though it was distinctly brown (the region really needs a good soak), and the Goulburn River was running high which made it much nicer. I imagine the experience would be better when everything is green.

we rode slowly and gently from Tallarook to Mansfield via Alexandra, Taungurung country, over 4 days. You could easily do short rides from any of the main towns. Well made gravel track, a bit loose in parts. I was on a flat bar road bike with 700 x 32 tyres and good tread, and it was easy enough riding. Couldn't do it on slick road tyres. Good toilets along the way, but no drinking water except in the main towns. There's a mix of well shaded and open stretches. It's a very peaceful ride, and absolutely beautiful country. The best bike ride I've been on. Sincere thanks to those who built the track, (and those who built the original railway)

thinking of doing the entire trail on my road bike, im happy to buy a large amount of spare tubes and replace them from punctures so they are no problem. if I am not too concerned about getting a puncture is it possible to do on a road bike?

I have not ridden on all of this 134km long rail trail. The end bits are always nice!! - completing it is a to do list for me. Having ridden on the 80km return Warburton Rail Trail three times, some in the dark and majority of 76km Great Southern Rail Trail, stretches of typical rail trails can be bumpy with rocks. My husband realised the mistake when he rode his 23 wide road bike. If you have to use a road bike, check if your rim can accommodate a 28. Otherwise, do bring some spare tubes in addition to the discomfort on some stretches. I have a ball with mountain bike! Hope this helps!

Would like to walk the Rail Trail, any advice from previous walkers?
Thinking 20 -25 km per day depending on available accommodation and weather conditions. Has anyone walked in Oct or Nov?

Haven't walked it but saw plenty of walkers whilst riding it - i'm sure walking the trail would be very pleasant and there are quite a few options for accomodation along the way. As for weather, being Victoria it could possibly mean anything ;-)

Really would appreciate some advice/comments on using road bikes on the rail trail.
Thanks, Mango B

Would not ride this trail on a road bike, there are quite a few sections where the trail is loose/course gravel and sections that unless it's the middle of summer would be quite muddy.
