I went to the Massey memorial on a Saturday afternoon. Managed to get a car park below the Memorial. I could image that on a busy public or school holiday these parks would fill up fast. The walk up to the memorial is brief, maybe ten minutes. The path is not paved all the way. The memorial itself is incredibly beautiful and makes you think of this man and also his wife and the contribution they made to New Zealand and its history especially WW1.

Up towards the back of the Memorial is a dirt track that leads you up towards the WW2 anti aircraft defense bunkers that have graffiti pastured all over them, which gives it another dimension as a modern day canvas for artists. The walk to the bunkers is perhaps ten minutes so is quite brief. This area also seems to be a good spot for dog walkers.

We had not been up to the Massey Memorial since our children were smaller. We have always loved the stunning views from the Memorial itself and had wanted to go further. Today we went up to the WII anti-aircraft battery further up and enjoyed the views from higher up. We then went up to the old military road further up and looped back down to Massey Memorial. This was around 2.5 km so only a short walk. We will be back to walk the other routes in the park and link up to the top lookup and walk across to Fort Ballance and then Scorching Bay.

Our kids loved climbing on the fun placements we visited so we look forward to seeing the rest.

Our only criticism of the wider park is it seems to have had limited work and maintenance on the paths and beyond some pink ribbons tied to trees, very little signposting. Not up to Wellington’s normal standards, although totally meriting some promotion and investment we think.

Lovely uphill walk to the memorial yesterday and found the view to be amazing on all sides. Was great to see the city from that view.

Since my curiosity got the better of me last summer and led me to hike up a short, signed trail from Shelly Bay Road to this wonderful place, I've stopped here many times. Usually I'm heading north around Point Halswell to "run the bays" along Miramar, so it's a good spot to rest and enjoy the harbor breezes.

But this was my first winter visit, and it did not disappoint. The sky was heartbreak blue, contrasting with the gleaming white Kairuru marble of the memorial, which honors long-serving (1912-1925) NZ Prime Minister Wm. Massey and his wife Christina, both of whom are buried here.

The air was amazingly fresh, even by this country's high standards, and I had the place entirely to myself, except for the birds flitting and chirping in the surrounding trees. Think: TRANQUILITY and BEAUTY.

It's interesting to consider, however, that these peaceful heights were once the site of a gun emplacement, put here in 1886 when it seemed wise to counter Russia's expanded presence in the Pacific following the Crimean War. The gun pit was actually incorporated into the mausoleum.

Since this is a burial site, picnicking could be viewed as disrespectful, and alcoholic beverages are prohibited at all times. OK, I understand that.

It does seem rather a shame, however, not to have some little corner of this spacious promontory where people might gather to enjoy a bit of food and drink, along with the pleasant surroundings and the lovely views of Matiu/Somes Island, Mt.Victoria, Mt. Kaukau, the Wellington and Eastbourne waterfronts, the passing ferries, and maybe this time of year, if you're lucky, a passing right whale frolicking in the harbor on its way south to winter breeding grounds in the subantarctic.

I know folks who have lived in Wellington all their lives and never visited the Massey Memorial. They're missing something special, and you will be, too, if you are nearby yet pass up a chance to enjoy a few moments here. It takes about 10 minutes to walk from Shelly Bay Road on a rising, pebbly track. Worth every step. Be sure to bring your camera!

After a short walk up a few stairs and along a gradual sloped dirt track the trees opened up to reveal the memorial and an awesome view of the city and surrounds. The memorial is very clean and tidy with a lot of seating. The track continues up the hill behind the memorial to some old gun emplacements - quite interesting too.

The memorial of 19th Prime Minister of New Zealand 🇳🇿 and the leader of Reform Party. Known as one of the greatest politicians at that time. His wife, Christina Allen Massey also buried there. Have to walk approximately 10 minutes to the memorial park.

Been visiting Wellington for the last twenty one years and driven past the Massey Memorial on numerous occasions, without realising it's existence.
What a fantastic piece of architecture in white marble. Beautifully decorated and well preserved. In a fantastic setting with 360 degree views of Wellington. A short walk from the road and the vista opens before you.
After visiting the memorial it is well worth the scramble up the next incline because the views have to be the best in Wellington.
Well worth a visit.

A short walk from Shelly Bay Road up to Memorial offering fantastic views all across the harbour. Well worth the 10 minute walk. We combined it with a trip to Shelly Bay. Track up to the memorial is not wheelchair friendly and a little stony

Very grand memorial to William Massey and his wife. Built from white marble and quite large. The sign to the walkway to the memorial at the roadside is easy to miss. There is parking either side of the sign on both sides of the road. The path up to the memorial is about 250 meters long. Good views of Wellington harbour.
