Ideal for families with small children as it’s flat most over the way with plenty of variety and the river at the end is a great picnic spot.

We walked 2 or do hours along a short section of the track till the bridge. There's lovely Rimu and Beech forest. You get glimpses of the creek as you go along the well maintained track there are also picnic tables here and there. A nice drive out of Wellington stop at Caffiend along the way for a hot drink.

The Orongorongo Track is a popular walking ttrack in the Wellington region and the most popular entrance to the Remutaka Forest Park.

It's a fairly flat 5km walk through the Catchpool Valley to the Orongorongo River and there are a number of other tracks in the area for those wanting more challenging tramping options. The track is well maintained and skirts the Catchpool stream, traversing occasional streams with a large swing bridge about half way along.

I decided to do a loop and walked up Butcher Track which is a well maintained 2km slog uphill to a lookout / clearing with great views back over Wainuiomata Valley and Wellington Harbour. I then walked along Cattle Ridge Track which is less well formed advanced track for about 4km before a steepish descent down to Orongorongo Track. Bush cover is fairly dense so there are not too many viewing opportunities on this track, esp of the Orongorongo River or Mt Matthew which is the highest point in the area.

The Catchpool Stream meets the Orongorongo River at Turere Bridge but I didn't see any areas which woud be suitable for a picnic. Its possible there are some further north from the bridge but due to the time of day I didn't explore them.

The walk back along the Orongorongo Track was relaxing and enjoyable. It was still quite cool being a winter afternoon but the golden afternoon light amongst the trees was just stunning and the swing bridge was a highlight where I helped some travellers take a photo.

Although the guide says 2hrs tramping from Turere bridge to the entrance, I walked the 5kms in about an hour and added a loop back along the Catchpool Track for a change. Next time I'll arive in the morning and definitey take more time to explore the area.

A great day out and definitely recommended.

This is a stunning track in the bush near to Wellington and we found, a great place to try your first overnight stay in a DOC hut. Some of the earliest tramping in New Zealand occurred at Orongorongo, although I the current track is a lot easier than the original gut buster the bach owners walked in by originally!

The track takes 1.5 hours each way normally, but with overnight packs and three kids we found it took two hours in.

The track is very even and nicely wide and the slope in is a gentle consistent slope before quite a steep downhill to the river at the end (and uphill in reverse). There are more challenging tracks linked. The track is very pretty and are lots of nikau palms all the way up the track, which our kids call musical trees.

We stayed at the Haurangi Hut, accessible along a further two km track north along the river. This track is much more minor and took another hour with packs and when tired.

You can also walk up and down the river bed crossing the braids quite easily, although we found it was best to have our boots on when walking with our kids who were only in trainers so that we could walk across without worrying about wet feet.
Also, I would presume that the river rises a lot in times of rain so check this out first!

The track is quite easy to cover for any person with average fitness. Most of the track is through the forest but avoid going on a rainy day as you can not really enjoy being around the river and there is the danger of flooding. In spite of the rain, I really enjoyed my visit there and I strongly recommend it.

This short walk takes about 1.5 hours each way. It's a good challenge for beginners or those with young children. We enjoyed a picnic lunch at the river before turning back. Dogs are welcome on a lead. There is a lot of variety with trees, ferns and water. There are a number of bridges to cross. The track is very well maintained and clearly signposted. You will need a car to drive to the start of the track.

An easy drive from Hutt, it seems not many people know about this place. Stunningly beautiful, the track is well graded, for most of the way up, but easy going (with a steep down section at the river). It meanders for much of the time along beautiful creeks through the rainforest. Easy enough that families with small children were seen picnicking at the end of the track. Absolutely worth it!! 5km each way, and you can detour the long and hard way via Cattle Ridge/Butcher's track if you are up for it (don't recommend small kids in general for this bit), or branch off closer to the car park and do the loop. Lots of photo opportunities too!

The Orongorongo track is reasonably slowly climbing track which is good for the majority of walkers. There are some tougher sections to get your heart working and calfs tingling. The track descends fairly steeply at the end to the Orongorongo river.
The path is well made and signposted, with bridges crossing the valley in most places, so no particularly difficult sections or scrambling across streams to deal with.

The forest along the track is beautiful, with massive Rimu trees towering into the skies covered with various epiphytes, ferns, lillies and pittosproum, black and silver ferns throwing their dappled shadows, and mosses and grasses on the forest floor. So great to step away from the noises of the city, and just enjoy the birdsong.

This is the easiest track for reaching any of the DOC huts along the Orongorongo river if you're contemplating an overnighter.
