13 years after the devastating earthquake and the cathedral is still being rebuilt so all you can really see are a load of scaffolding and cranes.
As I understand it, this is because the authorities need to strengthen and redo all the foundations before they can start the actual rebuild. Believe it will be another few years before fully complete.
The new Chalice sculpture though does stand as a beacon of hope nearby.

Cathedral Square is centrally located and worth visiting when in the CBD. We stopped by the Chalice Sculpture, Christchurch Cathedral (under construction), John Godley Statue, the old central post office building and the “Rise from the Rubble” mural, just to name a few.

This is intended to be a review of the city center of Christchurch, NZ. My wife and I have travelled all over Europe and the Caribbean and I spent some time in Asia. What strikes us the most here is how CLEAN this city is. There is very little trash on the street (I mean VERY little), very little graffiti and very few (as in we’ve seen 2 in the 6 days we spent here) vagrants. There are also very few dogs in the city (I don’t mind dogs) so as a result you don’t have to worry much about stepping in dog poop like you do in Paris. There is a lot to see and do in the city and the fact that is so clean makes it that much more enjoyable. You should definitely spend some time here.

Cathedral Square is located in the heart of Christchurch and it is the geographical centre which is clean. Christchurch Cathedral is located in the Square.

Central square dominated by forsaken damaged cathedral waiting to be repaired after recent earthquakes. Square is on the way of Christchurch trams, there is one of stops.

We stopped here twice on our coach tour. The 1st time we stayed on the Cathedral Square. It was so sad to see the cathedral in the state it is now in since the devastating earthquake there. Thank goodness it is going to be restored and not pulled down. From the square one it’s possible to catch a tram on the Christchurch Tramway. I didn’t feel the need for this as the town itself is quite small and the tram is still not able to complete a full journey due to ongoing work. Across the square is the library. From the square it’s a short walk to the river and the memorial wall. This area has all been rebuilt and is modern and has a lot of restaurants and bars. The shops are just off the main walkway.
Do not miss the cardboard cathedral which is about a 15 minute walk away. It was closed when we got there but looks amazing.

When I visited, it had been over 8.5 years since the 2011 earthquake, and it didn't look like much had changed, only clearance and support to reduce further risk. I understand it takes planning and patience (I'm from California, we understand earthquakes). Now it almost works better as a memorial structure than to fully repair or renovate it back to working status.

When we were planning our trip to New Zealand, we thought about skipping Christchurch because of the earthquake damage. I'm so glad we changed our minds. The city is beautiful and has made remarkable progress. Granted, it is sad to see their impressive cathedral in ruins, but it is heartening to know that the pre-construction planning and design are underway. When we visited the Square, it was alive with tourists, food stalls, and entertainment and the promise of tomorrow.

Very sad to see the remains of this Cathedral that was devastated by the earthquake. It looked like it once was beautiful. From what we heard there seems to be a varying opinions relative to the rebuilding of the Cathedral. Very strange to walk around the enclosed area and see the destruction in the midst of rebuilding taking place all around the square.
