We went to thunderegg fossil, the equipment handed to us was in poor condition,, screws being used to hold the pick and handle together . I would have thought that if you are digging for rocks etc that you would be supplied with goggles for eye protection, this sadly was not the case.

not a experience that we would like to do again with our autistic son.

100m very steep incline to the digging spot. It could really be improved if they had someone at the digging site telling you how to dig and what to look for as we were only given a brief overview beforehand. Also have to pay extra to cut the rocks that you find.

For my daughter's 10th birthday she wanted to take some friends and mine for crystal rocks.

I was very disappointed with the Thunderegg Crystal Mine for a few reasons -

I rang and spoke to a staff member about how the activity works and was told the kids get a pick and bucket and then can choose where they want to dig. In our group we had two adults, 4 x older kids and 4 x 10 year olds. We were there for approx 1.5 hours and only found two small actual thundereggs. I would have liked to have been told about how physical this activity was. You really had to hit the dirt/rock ground very hard to start chipping away and digging a hole. It was suggested to use a hole that someone else has started - which we did. We all had blisters by the end.

I noticed a lot of younger kids with picks and buckets. I would have been a very disappointed parent if I had paid for them to dig. If you have a younger child they need to be very determined and able to stay interested for a long time.

Secondly the walk to get to the Thunderegg Mine areas has two very steep hills. I noticed other families with babies, toddlers and strollers who were unable to get up the hills and having to leave their strollers at the bottom. I saw three people fall/slide down as they were coming back down the hills. They dropped their buckets and their rocks all rolled away.

My daughters Grandfather was supposed to be with us at this activity. There would have been no way he could have walked the distance or the hills. The Thunderegg Mine website should have some text written about the environment and who it's best suited too. Our family would have been very disappointed to not be able to include all of the birthday party people.

Listed on the website is that this activity will take to between 1 to 2 hours. I don't think this is correct. We had 10 people digging for 1.5 hours and found two small eggs. So this is an activity where you could be there all day. You really need a lot of time if you actually want to find an egg. We had to leave by a certain time because we had a lunch reservation.

So we left having paid for 8 lucky dip eggs (supplied by the store) and the two that we found. Overall this was a very expensive activity with not much achieved. It was very disappointing as we have wanted to try this activity for a few years.

So my recommendation would be to only take people who are fit able and have an open time frame.

When the attendant at the shop tells you "when you hear this metallic sound, thats what your looking for" and you hear that sound a lot, you do get confused. But turns out most of those rocks that look like nothing up in the mine, can actually be something cool once washed off. We found some oddly shaped rocks up on the higher level, but found most of the thundereggs on the lower level. One family found the perfect hole with lots of eggs, and kindly gave us their gloves when they left and told us where to dig. We found mainly small ones 5cm diameter, but did manage to find a 15cm one. Something we've never done before, so it was a cool new experience to fill in the afternoon.

Spent a great day here with kids (7&4) and grandparents. We loved digging in the mine and found some great thundereggs to take away with us. We all went home happy, tired (and a little bit muddy) after a couple of hours of fun. Massive thanks to Sam who was so friendly and took lots of time to explain how the thundereggs were formed. We’ll be back for more of those eggs next time we are in the area!

Spend half a day (roughly 2 hours) at the Thunderegg Crystal Mine trying to find thunder eggs. It's a good experience for the kids (family) as you get yourself dirty trying to find the eggs. However, it is a bit tiring / boring after a while since you really have to do the work (digging) for these eggs. But, another option which will almost guarantee a beautiful crystal rock is to find any "broken" eggs or parts which show different colors on the outside (meaning different mineral deposits) in the inside. Then you can also collect them for the Staff to see whether they are worth to cut open. Mind you we spend an additional $40 dollar to cut open some rocks / eggs.

But it is a great fun for the family if haven't tried before.

Even though it was wet when we visited and got a lot of clay on our shoes, my grandchildren and daughter will definitely come back again. Great meals though a little pricey.

Husband and I found Thunderegg Crystal Mine on google and decided to give it a go. We had a good time and found some thunder eggs. Would recommend comfortable clothes, something to kneel on or sit (maybe a mat), sun protection and water to drink. Kids can do this activity too but they may get bored quickly. You are digging for the thunder eggs so if it’s not your thing to get down and dirty then you may get over it quick. Definitely recommend to anyone who likes to be out in nature.

My partner and I wanted to enjoy a day on the mountain and do something different, so we headed to the Thunderegg Cystal Mine (we had no idea what Thundereggs even were!). The staff at the Mine were amazing, and showed us around. We then got to dig up our own Thunderegg Crystals :) SOOO cool!!!! Definitely recommend this for a fun (family) day out.
