In the Colchagua Valley, where the days are very hot and the nights cool, very good wine is produced. Rent a couple of bikes and head to some of the many skilled wineries.
Our primary wine tasting took place at the excellent Maquis winery, two different tastings with a total of 8 glasses that covered the winery's two very different terroirs.
Ironically, our two favorite wines - a crisp sauvignon blanc/semillon and an elegant and very expensive cabernet sauvignon ("Futa") - came from some vineyards with more minerality and located 25 km closer to the Atlantic Ocean.
Conclusion: Colchagua Valley with its main town Santa Cruz is a lovely place to visit, but it's not necessarily where Chile's best wines come from. Just saying.

This is a beautiful part of the Chile. You would be able to visit many wineries, museum and restaurants. It is very safe and beautiful. The people are very friendly. If you go to Chile and like wine I highly recommend that you take 3 days to visit the Colchagua Valley. Driving in Chile is safe and easy.

This valley is very rich in agriculture and wineries. The little town of Santa Cruz has a lively plaza and shops, and places to drink cafe con leche. The infrastructure (roads, elec, water) are all fine.

My husband and I made a five-day detour during our Chile trip to sample wines, hike and horseback ride in Colchagua Valley. We stayed at Lapostolle, which is not only an incredible winery, but also has a small boutique Relais & Chateau hotel on its premises.
If you were staying at this property for three days or less, there would really be very little reason to leave. They have fantastic wines to sample, every type of Grand Marnier ever produced, since the owners also own Grand Marnier, hiking trails, horseback riding, beautiful pools for swimming, and perfect casitas from which to relax with a glass of wine, read a book and take in the incredible scenery of this picturesque valley with the surrounding mountains.
When you do venture out to tour some of the numerous surrounding wineries, there will be no shortage from which to choose. Our favorites, besides Lapostolle, were Montgras, Neyen and Montes. If you are into the finer wines, be sure to request a special tasting of their top wines. Most of the vineyards do offer this for a bit higher price, and it is well worth the freight. Otherwise, you might be stuck tasting the more pedestrian wines that you find in the discount stores back in the states. Huge difference in quality. The last thing I would suggest is to hire a driver for the day if you are going tasting from winery to winery. Some of the roads are not marked well, and it is a pleasure to be able to imbibe and have someone else take care of that task. The hotels can recommend bilingual drivers if you need them.

We have now visited the Casablanca Valley, Aconcagua, Maipo, Maule, Curicó and Colchagua Valley. All our wine tasting was self- planned and organised.
You certainly need your own transport, and plan ahead with a designating a driver. Chile has, fortunately, a zero tolerance for drink- driving.
That said we found it rewarding to be independent travellers, lingering when we wanted, taking spontaneous sidetracks where we wanted, the type of freedom you long for during a holiday.
Overall we found the Colchagua Valley best in terms of providing information with detailed maps to and description of the wineries, and good signposting.
Colchagua is a bit further from Santiago than, say, Casablanca or Maipo, but for the extra two hours on Ruta 5 (part of the 30,000 km Panamericana) this is a great option for seeing a variety of vineyards and taste amazingly different wines.
Last not least: there is beautiful fruit around you all the time, too. Stop anywhere and sample, buy, enjoy cherries, peaches, plums, kiwis, apples, nectarines, pears, and what not.
And this is prime countryside with all that has to offer. We were never left wanting in terms of accommodation, food, sceneries, opportunities for a swim, or anything else that makes a holiday so enjoyable.

O vale do Colchagua é a melhor região vinícola do Chile.

Choosing a Hotel in Colchagua Valley: Clos Apalta vs. VIK Wine Hotel? Any insights on pros/cons of each for late-30s couple looking for a relaxing food & wine few days away?

When did you go to the Colchagua? How did you arrange your driver and what did they cost? Best wineries and restaurants?
Thanks in advance

John, we went last March. We had absolutely perfect weather the entire time we were there. We stayed at Lapostolle, which includes drivers and meals. Most of the hotels or wineries that you would stay at in the area can recommend drivers to you. Most of the drivers in the area speak very little english, so it is good to either take an online course for basics or use your Google translation app for communication if you do not speak Spanish so there is no confusion. We visited, of course, the winery where we were staying at Lapostolle, which is phenomenal; but we also went to Montes, Viu Manent, and Montgras, all of which we thoroughly enjoyed. If you arrange a top flight tasting ahead of time through your hotel or call yourself, they will let you taste all of their top wines in a quieter setting for a nominal price. It is well worth it. Another must see in the region is the Colchagua Museum. The extensive collections will blow your mind, including archeological artifacts, gems, you name it. Hope this information helps, and happy travels, Sherry
