Looked interesting and would have like to explore much more but the mosquitoes were unbelievable. We were getting eaten alive as were other visitors and we all left very quickly. Very unpleasant. Sad as the actual place looked great and we’ll set out. Videos available and information clearly signed.
Staff need to supply/sell repellant. We spoke to the staff who were fairly dismissive. They indicated that it is always big problem so wondering why it is not addressed. The website could also mention this problem.
We stayed 10 mins as we couldn’t bear it any longer.
Disappointed and a costly experience.

love this area, the lighthouse if just one of the best. Nice to have a bit of a history lesson for the kids and what a beautiful place to be in prison

Wow. What an absolutely amazing location. An iconic venue that served two purposes historically. Well worth a visit for many reasons. Interactive audio and video presentations on offer and a reasonable admission cost to cover upkeep of the site by NSW NPWS. Particularly interesting is the part demolition and subsequent recycling of the roof and stair steel structures to recoup some construction costs when the building was retired. The site is now very exposed to the elements of nature, something very evident. Excellent coastal landscape photo opportunities and the neighbouring Trial Bay Campground appears well patronised in holiday times offering views across the bay for just under 100 sites. We drove through here for a look and plan to stay on a future visit.

Amazing views form the rocks, AND whales and dolphins!
Also an interesting museum worth a visit. Our kids liked it as well. Friendly staff. Nice walks you can do, we did not have time enough, next time we would at least overnight here one night.

Stunning views from the Gaol and surrounds along the beach, watched 3 pods of whales playing in the distance. I found myself wondering if the prisoners ever managed to see the beauty we did? The day we travelled the weather was perfection.
Lovely restoration of the remaining buildings and information boards for your self guided tour were quite informative and shocking at times! There was an art exhibition present for our time there which I felt added to the experience too!

I’m glad I fell across information on Trial Bay Gaol as it meant I was able to stop in here on my trip south from Coffs Harbour today.
With the highway changes, this is off the beaten path and I think they could do more to promote it as a tourist attraction.
Whilst they do guided tours in school holidays and Friday evenings, I visited on a Monday and it was a self guided tour.
There is an interesting 10 minute intro video when you first walk into the gaol and I highly recommend watching this to get some more information on the gaol.
I also recommend checking out the museum (it’s small however interesting), and the watch tower for great views.
It’s quite interesting here and it is what you make it - if you come to enjoy the historic buildings and the history of this place, you’ll enjoy it like I did.
Free parking available right in front of the gaol, and entry was only $11 for an adult.

Beautifully located on the edge of the cliff is this old Goal. The history and aboriginal connection to country is very interesting. Take your time to walk around and explore. You may even see some whales out in the ocean

Great for something different to do in South West Rocks. Lots of room for the kids to run around outside and there were even some kangaroos

This is a very interesting place to visit, to learn the history of the convicts and the hard life they endured. Well worth the visit.

Might sound silly but can you take pets we are looking to stay in caravan park and want to visit the goal but are bring out two dogs can we walk around the goal with them

Unfortunately you can’t take pets into the goal, there are lots of kangaroos an$ wildlife hopping around. The goal only takes a 30 Minutes to yo thru, so one person can stay outside, there is plenty of room near the parking area. That’s what we did with our little dog. Hope this helps, cheers Jane
