I received a ticket from the library through the Culture Pass program for the Superstition Mountain Museum. Honestly got more out of the free part of Superstition Mountain itself. The hike and the "town" was interesting to see. Being able to go into the church, see Wells Fargo, jail etc and see photos/posters of all the actors who have made movies there, was unique. Never knew so many movies had been made there. Most.of what you see online about the place has to do with how Superstition Mtn got its name but not that the place has so much more history. I think the stamping machine still being used (can be seen at certain days a week) made me realize that the Mountain isn't the only thing memorable about the place. Make sure to keep hydrated if you hike it. Definitely bring a camera because the area is gorgeous.

Nice drive and history in the area if you stop and read about it or visit the Superstitious Mountain Museum before they have maps and info you’ll get more out of the drive. I especially enjoyed the Saguaro cactuses they are everywhere and so big and old. Read about them too they are amazing!

We went to Goldfield, a little ghost town near Superstition mtn. It has many fun things to do. Recommend going there and seeing the mountains up close.

We went to Lost Dutchman State Park, which is popular, the view and wild flowers were great. Ther are just a few trails that were relatively easy for seniors.

We’d been looking forward to hiking in the Superstitions on a recent trip to Phoenix, but the trails were beyond our expectations. Dramatic vistas with rocky backgrounds and saguaros. We hiked the Peralta trail and stopped at the Fremont Saddle. Spectacular views. Petroglyphs at the canyon on the Heiroglyph trail did not disappoint. So many more trails, we hope to go back to the Phoenix area for this.

Great winter hiking destination for all ages/skill levels. Make sure you bring water.
Only thing we were somewhat surprised by was $10 admission.

Spent 9 days in the area. Hiking the mountain and getting lost in the desert. A truly different mountain experience for me. I've hiked nearly 1000 miles in my lifetime and this mountain in the desert was BRUTAL. The steepness of the approach to the mountain base and vast array of changing terrain is not to be taken lightly. Bring 3 liters of water if planning to do longer hikes like Siphon Draw to Flat Top Iron. Start by 5:30 am to beat the full on high on sky HOT HOT HOT sun. You'll likely encounter snakes like the black tailed rattle snake. The rock

The Superstition Mountains look more impressive the closer you get as you hike. The view from the road or parking lot do not do it Justice! The hike is not challenging until the last 25% of it. Make sure it is dry when you go. It was sprinkling out which made it very slippery on the steep rocks at the top.

My husband and I took our Jeep to Superstition Mountains. We took the Apache Trail and it took us 6 hours round trip with photo stops and a lunch break at a park near the water. There were places where we could take the Jeep off the road. The last mile or so was on an unpaved road so it was quite bumpy but we had a fantastic day! A lot of people had Jeeps especially at the last overlook.

Started out our long weekend in Mesa area by spending a day in the Superstition Mountains. Started out our day with a paddle on Saguaro Lake, took a break in the middle of the day for lunch and then set out for a "scenic drive" to Tortilla Flats and the Apache Trail (Route 88) in Tonto National Forest. The road is climbs the elevation and there is opportunity to stop off and take a photo, maybe a hike or a brief stroll. For a girl from the lakes and prairies of MN, the road has some hairpin turns on the edge steep canyon drop offs. But the road became unpaved and seemed to be single lane a few miles past Tortilla Flats (and was closed just prior to Willow Canyon). The scenery is beautiful and breath taking. Enjoy a pit stop at Tortilla flats for some refreshments and people watching.

Trying to get a little more clarification on time/distance/difficulty/recommendations...going to be in Phoenix area, want a difficult day hike. I am an experienced hiker, so wondering how much of the La Barge Boulder Canyon Loop Trail can be completed in a full day vs doing the Boulder Canyon trail...or do you start at the same and can decide as you go? Thanks!!

Don't bother with that hike. Do the Siphon Draw trail up the northwest side all the way to the Flatiron and then take a left all the way to the top. If you are in real good shape, you can be up and down in four hours. But for most hikers, count on six hours total.

Why is it called Superstion Mt?

According to George Johnston, president emeritus of the Superstition Mountain Museum, the mountain was called many different names, by a handful of different cultures, over the years. "The Crooked Top Mountain,” “Thunder Mountain,” and "Mountain of Foam,” are a few examples. But it was the local farmers, in the late 1860s, who tabbed this mountain with its final namesake.
Through the Pima Indians, the farmers of the Salt River Valley had heard stories about “strange sounds, people who disappeared, mysterious deaths, and an overall fear of the mountain.” Johnston said.
This influenced the farmers to believe the Pimas were superstitious about this particular mountain, and thus the name Superstition Mountain was born.
