The Brandywine Valley in Pennsylvania inspired great artists like the Wyeths, Pyle and a legion of others. This is an area that combines a number of terrific museums, splendid restaurants and bars and a slew of fine places to hike, kayak and canoe. The Brandywine River Walk, abutting the Brandywine Museum of Art, is easy and level. Don't be shocked to see a big old Northern Water Snake sunning itself across the trail. This is a harmless fellow, even though he resembles the more potentially deadly Water Moccasin ("Cottonmouth" ) which is almost always found considerably south of the Brandywine. Still and all I'd step lively around the snake and not stop for selfies. just in case a Cottonmouth has strayed way North of his usual range. There are more rugged trails all over the Valley as well as gentle ones with boardwalks. All good for inveterate hikers as well as folks with physical disabilities. Unlike some reviews say, I recommend that you go out of your way to spend a few days here. I really don't see this as purely for people who live locally.

You can tell why the Wyeth family and associated artists found this valley and its lovely natural features inspirational. I kept finding myself compelled to step outside the indoor galleries of the museum to stare at the river outside, gently but persistently flowing toward the museum windows, then past them. Would be a great place to come to mull over a problem or decision. My aunt brought an outdoor picnic that was great even in the cold air. Christina's World, the most famous painting by Andrew Wyeth, is not here; it's at MOMA in New York. But a painting of Christina when older is here, and many other paintings and studies by N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth, among others, make this a worthy trip for painters, artists, art lovers, and nature lovers. Also recommended, works of Howard Pyle, on display here and influential to the Wyeth family.

Went cider tasting here in the Spring which was a hoot and a half. It seemed like Fall and was cold and bleak, but the people we met were warm and the cider
was wonderful.

Saw "only if you live close" review and just smiled. Most of what is listed in the Brandywine Valley travel guides is just off main roads, but we locals love it because many tourists do the touristy thing and never venture just a mile off the mainstream, in any direction, where mile after mile of bucolic rolling hills allow beautiful scenic drives in peace, where hardly a car passes you by...places where historic old stone homes on pristine landscaped properties await, where thousands of acres of land are forever preserved in our state parks, the new U.S 60th. Monument Park, several natural land preserves, thousands of acres of privately owned preserved lands where you can watch fox hunters gallop the hills and dales and see horses dotting the landscape--several of which were Derby winners. Many properties encompass hundreds of acres of land which keeps urban sprawl to very few homes on any given road, the lovely Brandywine River crisscrossing the area, the old inns everywhere for fine dining or pubs for casual fare. What guide book did you use? I was shocked to see your post stating we don't have many biking/hiking trails because we are well-known for them, and they are everywhere. I love that we don't even need to take a main road to go shopping, etc., because there are so many lovely back roads affording us a mini vacation every time we venture out. It is a very affluent area where one zip-code has the highest income per zip than anywhere in the U.S. Believe me, the DuPont’s could and can afford to live anywhere, yet they chose the Brandywine. In 2013 National Geographic Magazine voted our area as one of the last unspoiled places in the country. The tourist places are amazing...Longwood gardens is world-renowned as second only to some of the gardens of England. But if you want tranquility, just get off the Rt.1/Rt. 202 corridor because, sadly, you missed the best part of your visit. The very thing you overlooked is what we locals do our best to preserve. Come back and take a second look--I think you will have a change of heart. Loving life in the splendid B.V.

I was disappointed and don't see myself returning anytime soon. Brandywine is advertised as a beautiful Valley out in the country away from the hussle and bussle, when in reality that is not the case so much. I was expecting to be away from "society" surrounded by thick woods, parks, bike trails, camping areas and lots of outdoor recreation...not so much. In fact, Brandywine isn't in the most affluent areas, seems to be just the opposite. Not the country weekend get-away I was expecting.
