Spent a couple of hours at this quiet museum devoted to the National Guard. I didn't know to much about their history or role and this museum, with well thought out displays and pictorial history, was able to give me a much better insight.
I was given a warm welcome and an explanation as to what could be seen over the two floors
Less than 5 minutes walk from Union Station this small museum should be a must for those interested in US history or if you have a military connection or legacy.

I have stayed nearby this museum multiple trips without ever knowing this museum was here. I am sorry I missed it until now. The upstairs is a working office for National Guard and veteran support efforts, but the downstairs is the museum. The front doors are buzz in only, so ask at the intercom to be let in. The lobby of the downstairs museum has miniatures in glass cases showing national guard representations from each of the represented states. The Medal of Honor area was excellent with dioramas to help show the scenes in various stories about soldiers and what they did to receive the honor. The library is a nice area with many historical works. The main museum display is more like many other museums with displays and descriptions of the different approach to National Guard service through the ages. Quiet place with very few people wandering through at the same time.

This is a great small museum a short distance from Union Station. I was the only person there; it has a mix of static and interactive displays, with interesting content. An interactive display in the World War II exhibit showed the date, locations, and divisions first activated in the United States (on 16 Sept. 1940). My grandfather was among those activated that day, a special and surprising treat to see. I would recommend this museum.

The National Guard Memorial Museum contains a half dozen galleries devoted to the history and accomplishments of the National Guard from pre-colonial days through Hurricane Katrina relief efforts.
The development of the Guard over time is interesting, as I often think of "the military," when, in fact, both the Guard and the regular armed forces participate in America's conflicts. That story is told here in a modern museum style with a good balance between text displays, artifacts and multimedia exhibits. I also enjoyed a display with miniature models of every airplane ever flown by the Guard from biplanes to supersonic jets, and another with miniature soldiers in historic uniforms associated with their states' units.
The Museum is not that large and you can see everything here in an hour or a bit more depending on your interest level. I was the only visitor while I was here.

It is only open M-F which is unfortunate . It also opens until 4ish. Regardless , it is an awesome museum dedicated to our fighting soldiers!!! The y have items, etc. from the Rev. War to now. There is a library. The gift shop is almost nil though. That is too bad. One of the many things that impressed me was Marshall's uniform b4 WW2. The other thing that also impressed me was the MOH section.
The museum is right next to Union Station, near the Postal.
This is amust see! "This we'll defend!"

We had the opportunity to visit the National Guard Memorial Museum which was a wonderful experience. It is probably not as well known as the other museums but really is beneficial to visit as a way to understand the National Guard’s role in the United States military. Additionally, it serves as a basis to understand the earliest role of the citizen soldier and to appreciate the development of the Guard through the centuries.

On a recent trip to DC I was able to attend some private meetings at the National Guard Museum - what a wonderful place - well kept and the museum itself is quit nice - people were also great - stop in if you can!

The National guard Memorial Museum is located at the corner of Mass Ave and North Capitol Avenue a few minutes walk from Union Station and is located right across to the Smithsonian Postal Museum. The memorial is dedicated solely about the work, movement, and development of National Guard from past to present. The museum highlights the duties of National Guard personnel in war time, peace time and disaster time. Come and learn about the National Guard and appreciate their sacrifice for the people and the country along with other branches of the arm forces. It is small but be prepare to listen and read a lot while in the building. Ring the bell and the front desk guard will let you in.

This museum is definitely a museum that is overlooked. The National Guard Memorial Museum needs to be promoted a lot more because when we entered there wasn't a single soul there. As a soldier in the Nation Guard this memorial was very meaningful to me. They had a lot of interesting things to look at and read. It took me and my friend over an hour to look at everything. This is a great way to learn the history of the National Guard from past to present. This is a free museum so I think everyone should take advantage of it! Absolutely fantastic!
