The reputation of U Street is better than the original. There are a few run-down shops, but no charm. It also smells of garbage. If you have time, you can take a look around Logan Circle. It's worth taking a walk.

A visit to U street is not complete unless you stop here. The half smoke is out of this world, delicious and messy.

U Street is fascinating and full of history ! Plenty of local eateries including Ben`s Chili Bowl (that I wanted to visit, seeing it on Michael Portillo`s "Great American Train Journeys"), bars and interesting shops/businesses. The Free Market is a feature. Farmers from local country areas are encouraged to come and sell their produce at no cost. Some research before you travel will enhance your visit. Enjoy !

U Street has many food and bars to hang out at. It’s worth just a drive down the road. Took about 6 min to drive it one end to the other end with lights.

The demonstration of Free Market can be witnessed on the streets of Mt.Pleasant , and U Street, wherein the farmers come and sell their produce on the platforms adjacent to streets. It may not be a big market, but the market shows the various produce produced by farmers, who come from nearby county. The farmers are provided with infra facilities to have their markets regularly and unwind in the evening, so that the area is made free and clean for pedestrians to use.
The big pumpkins, huge tomato, ginger with stems, hot chilly are on display. Perhaps, one chilly is sufficient to burn your stomach and I write this out of experience, even though the chilly is very small. Perhaps, you cannot judge anyone with the size of one's personality and this is what I learnt after tasting the chilly at home in typical sambar prepared in South of India style.
One tomato weigh more than 300 to 400 gms and huge pumpkins weigh more than 7 to 8 kgs. Perhaps, many countries can learn a lesson or two in encouraging farmers to sell their products in their big cities. In many countries, especially in developing countries, you cannot come to cities and sell your products. You will be branded as hawkers. The farmers come with their produce twice or thrice in a week to Washington DC. It is amazing that they are encouraged in cities like Washington DC.
These area around U Street bear the stamp of history, especially during Dr.Martin Luther King Jr time. Every Street has its own history and it can be seen-the boards kept at the entrance of every street tell the visitors, the history of the street and personalities lived in around this area or historical events surrounding the streets.

I was informed by a local that U Street was a happening place to be. I actually came to U Street for Ben's Chili Bowl which is right across the street from the U Street Metro station. Afterwards took a stroll down both sides of the street for a while, a quaint little area. The African American Civil War Museum is three blocks east from the U Street Metro Station and Ted’s Bulletin where I had a fantastic dinner is just one block west and two blocks south along 14th street.

The place is being redesigned and remodeled. Two worlds live in the same place at the same time. Old houses are being replaced by modern and elegant town houses.
You will find great restaurant and shops and also several street art few block away.
Hope the current art spirit will remain

U Street corridor has become the hot spot for nightlife in D.C. in recent years. The main center of U street stretch from 15 street to 9 street (a block up and down of each street except more on 14). There plenty of places to eat and drinks during the day time and plenty of different types of entertainments at night through early morning. However, the entertainments tend to gear to younger crowd (20+ to 30+). Old and run down building were rehab for both commercial and residential purpose. The good old Lincoln Theater was revived back to live theater, and the famous Ben's Chili adds to place to go. In addition to eating and entertainment, there are shops for all types of people. Also don't for get the African American Museum and the African American Soldiers Memorial. U street is easily accessed by public transportation.
