Tazara Train from Kapiri Mposhi
oct. 2019

We took this express train in the 8th of october. As in we my three children and my self. We had no expectations as had heard alot of bad. The train was 1 hr late to depart. When we got on we were highly surprised at how clean the train was. We were in a first class cabin, and even though i brought our own bedding we did not need it as they provide you with sheets, pillows and blankets all smelled clean. It does get very cold in the nights. Our train broke down twice which made us 24 hours late but both brekadowns were at night where my kids slept so wasnt a problem. The food in the restaurant is basic food, ugali rice chicken. Very cheap. There is also a bar that can be quute rowdy but we noticed the drunks were escorted to the back of the train by the security guards who are on the train. My biggest fear was the toliets but again we were pleasanly surprised that they were not as dirty as we thought. The cabins amd hallways and bathrooms are cleaned once or twice a day. The only issue was they do run out of water, they refill at biggwr stations. The train does stop an awful lot at all the little stations, abit like a bus. At every stop if your bores of the restaurant food there are vendors selling all sorts from.crisps to fruit. I would say bring extra drinking water, loo paper or wipes and snacks. There are sockets to charge phones etc in 1st class. The train is also very LOUD!! My children enjoyed it alot. Its slow adventure. Once you cross over into Tanzania you see some beautiful scenery. Also change money at the border as in zambia the restaurant only accepts kwacha and when they are in tanzania only tsh. Must say very easy immergration experience...they come to you and stamp your passport. Safari injema.

I took the Tazara train from Dar es Salaam to New Kapiri Mposhi some days ago. It was on tuesday and then the old train while the friday expresstrain are from 2016. Arriving at the station I was told it was a nine hours delay, but without any explanations. It ended up with 11 hours delay. I highly recommend the first class cabin, with four beds in a small cabin. Second class has six beds in the same space. Food was basic but cheap, chicken, beef or fish with rice or ugali. The train goes pretty slow and stops at all small station, the expresstrain has much lesser stops. But the Comfort is not bad and the scenery are nice at places. The trip took about 60 hours plus any delay. Arriving at the not too pleasant Kapiri Mposhi late we managed to stop a bus heading to Lusaka (3 hrs). I can recommend this trip, its one for the memories of travelling.

This is not for the faint hearted!

We tried our best to be prepared before we ventured onto the Tazara Express Train. Supposedly the faster train and cleaner, compared to the Tazara Ordinary Train.

We had packed:
Wet Wipes x a lot - didn't use Toilette paper
Wet Wipes that we mixed Dettol in
Snacks x too many (food is edible on the train and actually enjoyable)
Not enough water (the train can run out of COLD water/Beverages at times....
Pillows (we didn't bring our own blankets.. WOOPSY
and of course our bags and charger cables, make sure you have a plug with you...

What we weren't prepared for, the dirty toilets.. not so clean cabins.. very smelly bedding and pillows that is provided for passengers in First Class and Second Class.

But the adventure, the scenery the time to just sit in your thoughts without having to rush anywhere.. play board games and just take in life.. switch off.. that was well worth it!
If you Travel in Summer, the train gets very Humid and Sticky Hot when it stops...

It was disappointing to have the train unnecessarily stop more often that scheduled and have to delay our next trip by a full day due to this..
Be prepared for a longer trip (3:15pm Tuesday - 7pm Thursday)

Book a family Cabin, if you dont you will end up sharing with others..
You will want your own space after a few hours, it can get Chlostrophobic with the heat, the smells of soo many people in the heat etc.. Cabin Fever...

It is wonderful to see so many people from all over the world, come together to use this train just to experience it.. It is well worth it!

Thank you for a wonderful and a little bit tough experience!

It is a Bi-National single-track Railway built from 1970 to 1975 financed and supported by China Government and was the longest railway in sub-Saharan Africa covering 1,860 km (1,160 mi) long and is operated by the Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), linking the Southern Africa Regional transportation Network to Eastern Africa's seaport of Dar es Salaam, offering both freight and passenger transportation services between and within Tanzania and Zambia. The train takes about 20-hours from Dar es Salaam to Mbeya Station; there is a Restaurant and a Bar which is set closer to First Class cabins which has 4-beds each and Second class cabins which has 8-beds. The train goes through several regions with beautiful scenery en-route including Selous Game Reserve with a stop at Kisaki Station for travelers who want to visit or join the train in Selous.

Tips to travel on Tazara:

1. Get someone to buy your tickets 1 week in advance at least.
2. To purchase visa you need $50. Exchange all shillings as in Zambia they don’t accept it.
3. Bring your own bedding and pillow.
4. Get the bed net and sleep under it. The windows will be open as it so crazy hot.
5. Bring lots of water, soup, toilet paper.

Overall, it was good as we needed to go to Kasama, if I to travel to Lusaka I would have taken a plane.

We have not seen any animals. The train is very hot while in Tanzania. You don’t feel the fan at all. I felt like I was a grilled chicken.

We took the Tazara Express from Kapiri Mposhi to Dar es Salaam in Autumn 2018. I was nervous for the train -- I'd never been on a long train journey before, let alone a long train journey in Africa -- but I absolutely loved this experience and will be talking about it for years to come. My husband and I rented out a 1st class cabin, which I'd recommend if you are in a couple. The cabin was very clean, as were the toilets (each carriage had one African and one western style toilet, as well as showers and a sink room). Each day, someone came around and mopped the hallways and our bedroom. We'd brought our own food because we'd heard the food was bad on board, but actually the food in the cafe was very good and my husband had grilled fish with rice one night and really enjoyed it. The kitchen staff also offered room service and brought meals and coffee to your room each day if you wanted it. The bar area in the train was very lively. We made a good group of friends from Tanzania and Zambia and spent a couple of days with them chatting over beer and enjoying the scenery as it passed. The train does move slowly, and for us it was 14 hours delayed, so if you are tight on time or not a fan of slow travel, then this probably isn't the right choice for you...but if you're looking for a great chance to take in the scenery, have meaningful interactions with local people, and generally have a nice time then I would *highly* recommend the Tazara Express!

We booked the ordinary train from Dar Es Salaam on Tuesday 11 December.
For the booking the best and safe way is to go to the Tazara station in Dar Es Salaam.
If you call the numbers mentioned on their website they will put your name on a waiting list and your booking will be confirmed only when you will come to pay your ticket. Be aware that you can be removed from the list if someone else come to book and pay a ticket.
Don't trust some tour agents around the ferry who will charge you $60 US to book the express train. They also say you can get the express train on Tuesday what is absolutely false.
The express train is every Friday and leaves from Dar Es Salaam at 15:50 and the first class ticket cost 104 000 shillings.
The ordinary train leaves Dar Es Salaam every Tuesday at 13:50 and first class ticket cost 86 500 shillings.
From the center of Dar Es Salaam to reach the Tazara station a taxi will probably ask you 20 000 shillings, you can use an Uber for 4 000 to 10 000 shillings, or you can go by bus around 400 shillings.
