We found ourselves with a free day and decided to check out this "zoo". First, make sure you can arrange a ride both to and from - once you leave the main road, it is a difficult and long road to get from the pay station up to the entrance. It would not be walkable for most (2 or 3 miles maybe?). You pay at the gate station, then continue down an increasingly deteriorating dirt road and at the end is the zoo entry. The taxi that took us went all the way in without complaint, but getting someone to come pick us up at the end was challenging. Their website indicated an option to take you to the front, but they did not have a vehicle for this when we visited.
Once there, you'll be assigned a guide to walk you through the forested paths and among the cages. Some are very sad, with cages much too small for the animal. Some had a pack animal living a solitary life in a small cage. A few other animals did have large enclosures. The guide was knowledgable. Make sure to use mosquito spray - they are plentious. It took maybe 30 minutes to go through everything. At the end, you can rest under the shade structure and purchase snacks and cold sodas or water.
As an American where zoos are almost all focused on conservation and quality treatment of animals, this one was hard to experience. I hope they can improve conditions and education in years to come.

Our tour guide was friendly and enthusiastic and we enjoyed meeting two other families in our tour group. The enclosures were very basic and for some creatures clearly too small to sustain a happy and enriched life in captivity (e.g. the Gabon viper). The water in some enclosures did not appear to be in a good condition for the health of the animals (e.g. the crocodiles). The setting in the forest was great though and I hope that with some investment and expert input, it could become a wonderful place to visit, but it's not there yet. That said, as international visitors, we enjoyed the experience for what it was rather than comparing it to other (much better-funded) zoos.

Accra Zoo
Went there with my wife and would not recommend it. The animals are all looking poorly and miserable. There is no decent water stations or fountains for anyone. There is no access for people with disabilities. To crown that bad experience, on the way to the entrance via a 1.5 Km pothole filled road, I was rudely asked by horn blowing to make way for a forestry commission truck full of their staff. That’s how they treat their guests. Do not go there and waste your time and money.

The Accra Zoo is an interesting place. It has the potential to become one of Ghana top most tourist destinations.
From the entrance to the main zoo, the road is very dusty. Constructing the road and telling a story along the path to the gate will improve the experience.
The tour guides know their stuff and it increases the enjoyment and the interest.
Some few suggestions.
1. The Authorites should use social media to hype some activities like feeding the Loins 🦁 . Many people may be interested in seeing something like that.
2. They have to make some nicely designed tricycles for hiring. Maybe they can partner Kantanka and Knust to get some specialised Ghanain golf cart or tricycle to be used by children, the elderly and the physically challenged
3. A canopy walk across the Zoo wouldn't be a bad addition. They should partner some private investors to improve the experience.
All the same a good place for a family trip

Not a bad place at all.. it was a good opportunity for me to teach my nephew and nieces something new. If nothing at all, they've got few species that are not commonly seen outside. I just hope they get new species of animals to make the place look more interesting and also, educative. Please, a humble request, try and add some local names of the animals there

This zoo is very interactive, and you are able to get up close and personal with the animals. The guides are very knowledgeable and helpful. The lion exhibit is especially amazing. You are very close to the lions, and they are active and interested in people.

This zoo is in the Achimota forest. The forest has been taken over by smaller church groups. The area needs serious attention. The only good thing about the Achimota forest is the fact that the girl guides has their meeting building there. The zoo is a "0" in my book. They need a lot of attention to bring this zoo up to a '5' in my opinion. Don't waste your time there. The zoo should be skipped until they get it to an acceptable international standard. Period.
