This is basically a small island that may have seen better times.
We were hassled when we got there by youths claiming to be from a Ministry, and demanding money to show us around.
The Island itself is nothing exciting - it is a patch of land with some large trees and buildings under renovation, surrounded by water filled with plastic waste. There is a dirt area that serves as a makeshift football pitch in the middle, and some rough-looking locals wandering up and down talking to themselves and hassling any visitors.
Save your time and visit somewhere worth visiting, like CeCe beach.

🖒The Providence Island........what to say about it......it's just so nice and very historical......some settlers landed on this island when coming to Liberia. I encourage people to go there and discover new experience.👍

Absolutely worth a visit, but you need a guide and to book in advance because the island is looked by security.

i grew up in Liberia and every holliday or every time i got a chance my freinds and i would hop on the bus and go to providence island. it has always been one of my favorite sites to visit in liberia. the entrance to the island is an iron gate about 3 to 4 feet tall. there's also a spiral walk way almost like a stairs that will take you to the lower level of the island. on the ground, you are surrounded by green carpet grass, blue water and big and beautiful trees. i loved it. it is great site. i would definately reccommend one to visit it.

There is not much to see in Monrovia and this is not a destination I would crave to visit.
Providence island is polluted by noise and dark smoke from the bridge

situated in the middle of Monrovia on the monstredo county lies the remains of the old buildings that housed the first set of free slaves from america. this site reminds and tells great story of the slave trade, however, it is a relieving site. a nice tourist attraction.

Went to Providence Island on a Saturday morning and all the staircases giving access to the island were locked! We were told that it is open on holidays and special occasions only...which is a bit odd. It seems like just keeping the access open, cleaning up the place could be an excellent income generation activity for a few people in Monrovia. Even better if there were oral historians around to tell the story of this very unique history on the continent. For those of us who come from so far to see, learn and experience lessons that make up our heritage, it is a big let down not to have the chance to make these small connections. Come on city of Monrovia--you are so resilient-- lets see getting this monument up and running!

This is for History Buffs
Its not much of a site to experience but the history of this island is an arc in the history of Liberia.
After being populated for a mere few thousand years, Liberia struck American abolitionists as an ideal place to resettle freed slaves. In 1822, the first group stepped off the boat at Providence Island, Monrovia. They saw themselves as part of a mission to bring civilisation and Christianity to Africa, but their numbers were soon depleted by tropical diseases and hostile indigenous residents, who resented being dominated by the new arrivals. The surviving settlers, known as Americo-Liberians, declared an independent republic in 1847. Yet, fatally for the new republic’s future, citizenship excluded indigenous peoples, and every president until 1980 was of American freed-slave ancestry. For nearly a century, Liberia foundered economically and politically while the indigenous population suffered under a form of forced labour that would have been called slavery anywhere else. During William Tubman’s presidency (1944–71) the tides began to change. Thanks to the image of stability that Tubman was able to project, foreign investment flowed into the country, and for several decades Liberia sustained sub-Saharan Africa’s highest growth rate. Firestone and other American companies made major investments, and Tubman earned praise as the ‘maker of modern Liberia’.

That is the much i learnt and it was enough for me,
You can plan your own visit for your own experience .

Providence Island is so closely connected to the history of Liberia, the tripadvisor reports encouraged us and so we planned to visit this iconic place yesterday. To our utter disappointment we found the access gate locked with a chain. The care taker came to the gate, informed us that we must first get permission from the Ministry of Tourism. When we told him, that we do not have enough time, the friendly gentleman started to give us interesting information through the thick bars of the wrought iron gate. What a weird and undignified situation!
On the way back we noticed the litter on the pathway along the Gabriel Tucker Bridge and also on the shores of this World Heritage Site.
Hopefully the Tourism Ministry will take note and present in the future the treasures of Monrovia and Liberia to visiting foreign nationals without undue, time consuming formalities!
