Beyond doubt Zuweila Gate is the most impressive of the three remaining gates of the old Fatimid era city of Cairo. Ever since the Fatimids conquered Egypt and founded Cairo in 969 AD they paid special attention to defence. The two towers (minarets of the adjacent mosque) served as watch towers to check on possible hostile intrudors.
If you walk the 1.5 km from Bab Zuweila (originally part of the southern wall) to the northern gates (Bab al Futuh and Bab al Nasr) in the now partly restored northern wall, you get an idea of the size of the old city.

One of the eight gates of the city of Cairo, and one of the three remaining in its original state
When it was founded, the city of Cairo was surrounded by 8 gates on each of its four sides
Two to the north
Bab al-Futuh and Bab al-Nasr
And two to the east
The bridge and the qaratin, or what is known as the burned door
And from the south
Bab Zuwila and Bab Saada
And from the west
The door of relief and the iron door
And when it was first created before
Jawhar Al-Saqlabi The city was smaller than its current area
But after about 100 years
On the origin of ancient gates
And with the expansion of the city
The building's gates and walls were replaced, some of them made of mud brick and stone
Larger gates and stronger and higher stone walls, almost at the same serpentine level, but on a larger area, at the hands of the first great Fatimid ministers.
Prince of the armies, Badr al-Din al-Jamali
It is the only gate that bears the responsibility of carrying the two minarets of a mosque
The Mamluk King Al-Mu'ayyad Sheikh Abu Al-Nasr Al-Mahmoudi
And that's after replacing
Shamail's treasury was imprisoned in his beautiful mosque, and after the mosque's minaret fell before that during its construction

We have climbed to the top of the Bab Zuweila! Both towers were open so 4 of us split into 2 groups, each climbed one and took pictures of the other on the top. Despite of the awesome height, there were only 150 or so steps to reach the top. The last segment of the stairs, however, were bare metal bars of a hanging ladder in the air, not for the fainthearted. Once on the top, you’d have the best view of the authentic Old Cairo. You can see many towers among the endless buildings, 360 degrees at your foot.

The area is filthy and packed with people, cars and motor bikes. I felt uneasy and unsafe. I can only feel awful for the beautiful monuments and cultural artifacts that are surrounded by slums.

Preciosa puerta que da acceso al barrio islámico. No perderse la calle por la que se llega. El Cairo auténtico, genial, imperdible

Out of the three Fatimid gates that remained standing nowadays, Bab Zuwayla is the most dramatic, with its crowning fifteen-century minarets. It leads the visitors to a bazaar quarter that is as full of life today as it was in the Middle Age.
In the early Mameluke period, the sultans use to sit on the platform between the two towers to watch the procession of the Mahmal, the ceremonial palanquin that accompanied the annual pilgrimage caravan to Mecca. However, this gate was also a place for public executions, and the heads of criminals were displayed above the gates on spikes. Even Tumanbay, the last Mameluke sultan of Egypt was hanged here in 1517, after the country's conquest by the Ottomans. Tumanbay’s rope broke on the first two attempts before his luck ran out. His body remained suspended from the gate for three days, and then was buried
The views from towers are spectacular, although part of the neighborhood is sadly neglected.

Место очень аутентичное: крепостная стена, ворота, упирающаяся в стену главная улица средневекового города. Можно хорошо прочувствовать атмосферу Каира.

Bab Zuweila (or Zuwayla) dates to the days of Fatimid Cairo and was completed in 1092 AD. Located in the Islamic district of Al-Darb al-Ahmar, this historic landmark is one of three remaining medieval gates in the old city walls of Cairo. Historic Cairo was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979 so you don’t want to miss this area! Two minarets flank the gate and are open to visitors for a nominal fee. Although it’s a tight climb up a spiral staircase, the view at the top is worth the effort.

Is it possible to go up the steps alone? Or do we need a guide/tour? Also can we go up at any time or is there opening hours? If so how can we find them and will they differ during Ramadan?
Many thanks!

Hi, it is certainly possible to go up to Bab Zuweila by yourself (even if I have not gone up).
If I remember correctly, the opening hours are 9 am-3pm. I don't know if they vary in Ramadan.

Omg I would love to do this but a bit worried about the amount of steps to climb 😳

Hi Pamela, it all depends on your physical condition, its doable for sure at least to the second level where you will have a great view and see the paradox of Cairo.
Above that level, the steps are more like a thin bar and you can hold to the middle vertical center bar and get a little rush of adrenaline....
Enjoy !
