This section of the wall is well worth the trip, and I strongly recommend this place in addition to Mutianyu Great Wall. Picking one over the other is nigh on impossible, as the experience differ greatly. Some of the views here are mesmerizing, and some sections of the wall are not maintained, which provides you with a slightly different experience than the more commercialized sections.

I paid 43 RMB in entrance fee. I met some other tourists who had not paid an entrance fee because they entered the wall from a different place. The guards here, however, ask for your ticket multiple times to ensure you've actually paid, so keep that in mind. Also note that there's a lot of steep stair climbing involved.

The guards and the people at the ticket office did not speak any English. It's easy to find your way around, and it's not necessary to travel with a guide or a group. There's also very few people on this section.

隠れた場所にあり、注目度もあまり高いとは言えません。しかしながらそのような場所にこそ名所はあるのです。春から夏にかけての訪問をおすすめします。

We have already been to the usual touristy places and wanted something more special and less crowded. This private day tour is exactly what we expected. We had the guide, Storm Li all to ourselves and he made the tour interesting with his stories and experiences. It was a very enjoyable scenic journey and the best part was the entire Great wall was empty, only us. We did not have to fight with hordes of tourists to take a nice picture. Afterwards we stopped at a Granny Farmer's place for dinner and the food was amazingly fresh and yummy. Much better than what you would get at the restaurants in Beijing city.It was definitely worth it. Storm was very accommodating and allowed us to customize the journey to suit our travel needs.

This was a most uncomfortable trip! The guide put his arm around me, told me that I was sexy when we were on a remote part of the wall and tried to bring the conversation around to sexual subjects in the car on the way back. I was totally reliant on him to get me back to the airport so there wasn't much that I could do about it except hope that he wouldn't try to take it further.
His driving was dangerous, he drove far too fast and weaved in and out of the traffic. We narrowly missed one crash and came close on a couple of other occasions; it was scary.
We didn't visit all the places that were included in the tour and, because of his sleazy behaviour, I didn't follow up on these even though I'd been really looking forward to them.
We didn't stop for water and snacks as mentioned in the itinerary, instead we went to the guide's aunt's place where I was offered tea (which I don't like), juice (which I don't normally drink) and roasted chestnuts. The guide ate and drank much more than me and family members came round and stared at me while all conversing in Chinese. We went back there for lunch, it was delicious but I wasn't hungry and I had to pay 80 yuan for a meal I didn't want and once again the guide did most of the eating.
On the way back I was taken to a factory and shop. This wasn't my choice, I've seen this sort of factory before and wasn't prepared to buy. The guide also tried to sell me an extra tour, and at the start he wasn't waiting where he said he'd be so I waited around for 15-20 minutes before he found me.
The sections of the wall we visited were great, but the village was a waste of time as I just sat in the rather shabby garden while the guide talked to his family in Chinese.
The tour was booked with Storm as the guide, but he didn't actually confirm that was his name. However I recommend caution for women booking this tour alone, and all concerned with road safety.

i was v v worried about climbing the Great Wall Of China, but my Thomas Cook guide assured me that it is not so bad n that we can back off when ever we felt like.so a few of us climbed to its base found a seat under a shade n saw the others venture to greater highs.U have to have strong legs to climb the ancient stone uneven steps but the scenery is spell-bounding.A visit to china is incomplete without a visit to the great wall

We have never had such a tour. STORM LI was just incredible. He took good care of us and explained everything to us. Picked up punctually at the hotel, safely brought by train, shown a really beautiful section of the wall, the way up was already indescribably beautiful. There were no tourists and everything was so original. Very interesting was also his home, where we were really lovingly and proudly led around and got a great lunch. And the tea was delicious. One really forgot that one is a tourist on this day. We will never forget that feeling. Also the temple and the explanations about its religion really explained and showed us STORM LI. On the way we were even shown a factory, where everything is still made by hand. On the way back we stopped in a tea house. It was so interesting. Many thanks to the incredible STORM LI

We hiked this portion of The Great Wall with our guide, Dewit. Dewit was knowledgeable and encouraging, which was especially nice due to the challenging route.

This portion of the wall is not very long (1000 meters), but it is steep and only two small sections have handrails. This section of the wall is partially restored, but not to the extent of the more popular/touristy/busy locations, which we specifically sought to avoid. However, you get the benefit of being able to see both restored wall and "wild" wall. Your uphill hike ends at the second watchtower; from there, the wall is untraversable and unrestored.

Hiking up from the dam at Moshikou Pass and back down took us about two hours. After, Dewit took us to the park area of man-made ponds and gardens, which led to a dirt/gravel trail uphill to another portion of wild wall. (Restoration was in the beginning stages, however.)

After such a challenging hike already, after a while I opted out of the second hike and I waited for my husband and Dewit to return (I made it 3/4 of the way - so close!). My husband took a few photos, but said that while the view was nice, the Xiangshuihu (Moshikou) section was more enjoyable and worthwhile, as you could see this part of the wall from there.

When I state that the Xiangshuihu section was challenging, please note that we are fairly fit individuals. We may not be teenagers or athletes, but we are of a healthy size and weight and we exercise regularly with a trainer, and we both thought this hike was challenging. This is not a route for those with mobility, joint, or balance issues. Getting to the first watchtower is easy for most, but getting to the second required climbing high, uneven steps -- some so high I needed to "step" using my knees (I'm 5' 2") -- and scrambling using hands and feet to climb. I brought a messenger bag for my water, camera and spare lens, and this was a mistake. The added weight was a nuisance and the bag, worn crossbody, got in the way during the climb and descent. I highly recommend a small, lightweight backpack!

I also recommend this part of The Great Wall if you wish to avoid crowds. It is not very touristy. We encountered only three art students from the nearby school hanging out at the wall, and an elderly Chinese couple. There were a few more who stopped by only the first watchtower, and a few families were strolling in the park area. It was very pleasant on a warm, sunny day.
