Entrance fee CNY50 per person and we paid another CNY200 in total for an onsite guide to bring 3 of us around and tell us more about the temple.
先有潭柘寺，后有北京城。This temple was built 1,700 years ago, making it older than Beijing itself. It's well hidden by the mountains surrounding it, so it can't be seen from the highways below, adding a mystical holy vibe to it. The temple boasts 2 千年银杏树 (Ginko trees), one is 1,300 years old and the other 1,000. What's unique is that while both trees are side by side just a few meters apart, 1 turns yellow (and wilts) before the other because the sunlight shines from one side. There's a saying the 1,300 year old one on the right side is the 帝皇树，because interestingly, a new trunk grows whenever a new Emperor takes over, and a branch breaks when an Emperor passes. Hence the other is known as 配皇树, symbolising the Empress.
We got to see the huge deep pots used by the monks to cook food and many other interesting facts (like the Dragon and Tiger pavilion where the Emperor played poetic games with the Officials, the holy fish that people were queuing to touch at 龙王殿, the 百事如意 stone etc). We also checked out the 西观音洞to view and pay respects to the 肉身 (mummified body) of one of the monks that lived here once.

来京出差，参加贷后管理相关会议与课程，正好赶上北京的晚秋，也许是最后一个能看秋景的周末，于是约上在京好友前往西郊的潭柘寺。寺中古树繁多，大雄宝殿后的挺远中有两颗一千四百年的银杏，其余处还有动辄千年的七叶树、杉柏等，还有結着果实挂枝头的柿子树，心中无尽的感动。它们一动不动，却苍劲有力，它们叶落枝空，却散发无限生机，它们屹立千年，却仿佛要再活万年。

This temple in the western suburbs of Beijing is not just another temple. It is indeed quite beautiful. But its originality is that it is built on the side of a mountain. When you walk up from one part of the temple to another, you progressively discover a spectacular landscape with the temple buildings and the mountains. Superb !

Considering the travel time needed on the subway to get to Pingguoyuan Station and from there a very long bus ride of 1.5hrs where the local bus stopped at so many stops just to get here, I didnt think the attraction warranted a visit unless you are close by. It had some colourful spots but I would not purposely make a trip here if I had known it would take up so much travel time. It is just a temple and unless you are very interested in temples and their history, they all look the same after a while.

Every corner was a photo op.
However, even the locals were surprised at the ticket price.

It's a lovely temple and it's much more peaceful and authentic than some of the others I've been to in Beijing. It's not easy to get to, but if you have time then I'd recommend.

As we continue to explore the outskirts of Beijing we spent one afternoon here by the Hill top temple. It is the perfect place to get some exercise as there are more than a few steps to get to the top, you will however be rewarded by an amazing view.
This Buddhist temple park is located in a mountainous area west in the Mentougou district that belongs to Beijing One of the main halls inside the temple is said to be built 1700 years ago.
If you want a day trip or half a day trip to see something different, I totally recommend this place. Specially attracted to the surrounding mountains and the views around.
We did not rush to go there as we started the day having a lunch downtown Beijing before we hired a DiDi to take us there. It was just a little more than one hour to get there and the place was not crowded as you can expect if you go to Beijing hotspots more close to the city.
As we are approaching the Temple Fair time of the year in Beijing with the Chinese New Year approaching, I would say this will be the perfect place to go. Expect the park to be crowded but probably less crowded than city center locations.
How to get there:
Hire a DiDi/taxi as we did. We were in 4 persons and each paid around 40 rmb to get back and forth.
