The Blue House is a first-class historical building in Hong Kong. It is called the Blue House because the exterior wall is painted blue. There are Orange House and Yellow House next to it to form a small building complex. They are located at Nos. 72 and 74, Shek Nui Channel Street, Wan Chai, Hong Kong. There are tourists checking in here every day, but it is not crowded. There is a famous Thai noodle shop next to it that has a long queue. If you want to try it, it's best to arrive early before it opens.
Nearby is Wedding Invitation Street. It takes less than five minutes to get to Blue House from Wedding Invitation Street. There is also an old-style Wan Chai post office along the road where you can take pictures.

Built in the 1870's one of the few "Tong Lau" of balcony style tenement blocks.
Painted cobalt blue by the government with surplus paint thus earning the name " Blue House"
It currently serves as a residence for local Hong Kong.
This eye catching street with clusters of brightly coloured buildings have been given a new lease of life.
This is a living time capsule show casing the grass roots community of Hong Kong.
Worth a visit.

This is a cluster of old style residential buildings (tong lau) preserved for historical reasons. The dominant one facing Stone Nullah Lane is the Blue House. Next to it and behind it are also the Yellow House and the Orange House. Note that at the time the buildings were built, they didn't use flashy colors for painting houses. So it is a jarring cultural inconsisteny to see an old house painted in in-your-face blue. Also people are still living in the upstair units and no trespassing is allowed beyond the ground floor.

Whilst you might not go out of your way to see this house on its own, it is one of the more interesting sights on the Wan Chai Heritage Walking Trail and is one of a cluster of colourful houses in the same block. It is a classic Chinese tong lau or tenement house built in 1922 and belongs to a period when Wan Chai was crowded, seedy and squalid.
Alongside it you will also see a tangerine orange house, a mint green house and a canary yellow house.
Tenements like this were built up until the 1950s. They were always mixed purpose, with shops at street level and tenants on the above floors. The Luen Hing liquor store and a grocery shop were originally on the ground level of the Blue House (where the free House of Stories museum is now).
The Blue House is the oldest of this group and still has the typical wooden ceilings, original wooden stairs and wooden and wrought iron balconies that helped with air-flow and cooling in the crowded rooms. Facilities were limited and (in the absence of strong planning standards) builders only built the bare minimum which extended to electricity and water, but not to town gas. At this time, residents would buy firewood for cooking or kerosene and petroleum gas for fuel which would have made the blocks smoky and pungent places, but also risky.
One thing that is not typical, is the colour. The bright blue is the happy result of someone thrifty, deciding to re-paint the building in the 1990s, and using leftover blue paint from the Water Board.
Perhaps the most impressive thing about the Blue House is that a key part of the preservation plans was to have the original residents remain. Alongside the refurbishment, were plans to retain and revive the original sense of community. I found this a remarkable and inspiring piece of living conservation.
NOTE – Continue a few more minutes to the top of the street to also see the large Pak Tai temple, built in 1862.

The Blue House is actually part of a small cluster of refurbished and repurposed tenement buildings which includes fellow member of the Wanchai Heritage Trail, the Yellow House and the less known Orange House, all of which are adjacent to each other through the open courtyard just behind the Blue House.

The Orange House is a uniquely shaped 4-story tenement building that was originally constructed in 1957. It is a simple yet modern concrete structure with a fin like shape and exterior that is now painted orange colour. The Orange House was in a rather dilapidated state but restored around 2017. While not formally part of the Wanchai Heritage Trail, it can be visited as part of tours arranged through the Hong Kong Houses of Stories which is located on the ground floor of the Blue House on Stone Nullah Street.

Interesting concept - a living museum. Unfortunately during the pandemic not all facilities are open all the time, and it is fairly small area so other than the explanatory bulletin boards and posters really not all that much to see. But while the building itself is not exactly really special, the streets around is an interesting area to roam around. Tourist-oriented bars and eateries mingle with old buildings and even a small temple. All minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Wanchai commercial district. Worth a quick visit if you can spare the time

On the Wan Chai Heritage Trail. The Blue house one of the remaining Tong Lau type of buildings that used to frequent Hong Kong in years past.

The Blue House is a historic tenement style complex located along Stone Nullah Street just north of Queen's Road East. This is a Grade I historical building in Hong Kong and Stop 4 on the self-guided Wan Chai Heritage Walk. The property was constructed in the 1920s. It has a history of being used as a hospital as well as a cluster of traditional Chinese shophouses. The complex was painted deep blue in 1997 and has since become informally known as the Blue House.

The Blue House exterior is interesting to view. There are 4 storeys of blue shuttered units with ironed terraces. On the ground floor, you will also find the interesting Stories of Hong Kong Museum where you can view a permanent exhibition of household items typically found in old Hong Kong houses in decades past. This is an interesting way to spend 5-10 minutes if you plan to stop by and see this historic building on the Wan Chai Heritage Trail.
