Of my week’s stay in Nanjing this was the most spectacular place I visited. Staggering views and scenery in both the main pagoda temple (the other was closed) and the adjacent building which contains two massive underground halls which were breathtaking. Clearly a very modern creation but the artistry is incredible.

We visited the area primarily to see the pagoda. First we thought to book a tour but the hotel told us we would be better to go by taxi and get our own tickets at the gate and make our way around. Great advice as the tour was a few hundred dollars but when finding our own way there plus entry and bus ride to the mountain was $50 each. The area is great to walk around but the big surprise was the temple built under the mountain 5 levels down. This was incredible. We were also lucky to see the show inside the ground level temple. I so advise a few hours to walk around.

Niushoushan 牛首山 - so named as the 2 peaks in the mountains here resembles the head of a bull with the horns. Pricy entry fee of RMB160, which must be purchased via Alipay or Wechat, the most expensive entrance ticket this trip. The visitor centre where you arrive at is at the bottom of the hill. Nicely done up and everything looks very new still. They offer umbrella rental in event of rain (which was the case the day we were there) but only limited numbers available. After clearing security checks, we opted for the Shuttle Bus (RMB10) which sent us to 佛顶圣境,where 佛顶塔 & 佛顶宫 is. The journey to the top was by foot and escalators (heng ah) though there were still some flights of stairs in between.

佛顶塔 is a 唐代风 8 storey pagoda, unfortunately they don't have lifts in there, so given the narrow stairway and my aching legs, we only made it up to Level 3 for some panoramic views and photos and went back down to enter 佛顶宫. The exterior is a famous OOTD spot, where the reflection in the water feature outside creates a lovely photo. Unfortunately it was raining that day so we didn't get a photo of that. We headed into the main hall first, where a huge Resting Buddha 卧佛 lays in the middle on a super slow rotating platform. Beside it are 2 amazing 3D printed trees of significance to Buddhism - 无忧树 & 菩提树. 佛祖释迦牟尼诞生在无忧树下 and later, 在菩提树下悟道。The walls here are also decorated with more statues of Buddha, encased in 'holes' cut into the walls, to resemble caves in the mountains. This place is famous for hosting the 佛顶骨舍利子, which is placed in B6 but not open to public except on special holidays which I can imagine the crazy crowds then. So the furthest one can go is B5 which boasts an impressive architecture. As you work your way up (by escalators), each level hosts more statues of different Buddhas and Deities, made of different materials (from pottery to ceramics to bronze and crystal), hence known as 千佛殿,万佛廊. The audio guide is free here, but you have to pay a deposit of RMB200 first to get it, then when you return it, it's refunded thru Wechat, all self automated.

Overall, worth visiting if you have interest in Buddhism or photography. Otherwise, the entry fee and cab fares to and fro, might not be worthwhile. This place is so huge, it took us almost 4 hours here, it was almost 2pm when we left, taking the shuttle bus again, this time to the West Gate which is slightly nearer to our next destination.

There aren't many food options here, the restaurants are mostly vegetarian ones only.

“The Niushou Mountain testifies to half the history of Nanjing.” The Niushou Mountain is the foremost of the four major scenic spots in Nanjing. The paramount element of the scenic area is the Foding Palace, which not only enshrines the parietal relic of Shakyamuni Buddha but is also a sublime must-see location. Experience the pure Buddhist light in the Grand Zen View, overlook the scenery from the top of Foding Pagoda, and touch the sky in the Thousand Buddha Hall. Every view is guaranteed to be awe-inspiring.

Very large and super beautiful forest and lake area with an amazing buddistic temple on the top of the mountain. Definitely worth the little bit higher entrance fee.

It is said that a piece of the real skull of Buddha was found inside an old pagoda in Nanjing in 2010. A spectacular shrine was built in an area where many Buddhist temples used to be, Niushoushan (Cow's head mountain). Completed in 2015, this is a new tourist attraction in Nanjing. The structure is stunning. The ‘palace’ comprises three stories above the ground and 6 stories underground. The main attractions are underground, the lowest floor holding the holy relic. The skull itself is not displayed. There are many statues and artworks throughout the building, which are absolutely spectacular. I was told that they spent close to 1 billion dollars for the construction of the building and the surrounding area. If you visit Nanjing, this is a must-see place.

Highly recommended - we went during Qingming Festival - which was on the one hand a challenge due to busy roads ahead of the Park (lots of graveyards on the way) but on the other hand we enjoyed the entire stay on site with a lot of sightseeing and hiking - the entire site is really well organized and perfect for families to stroll for a couple of hours - for all Buddhists it is definitely a must even if there is principally no history but it is just overwhelming and stunning ...

Bellissimo parco.

What a magnificent feat by mankind, everything from the hall on top to the underground rooms engulfed in golden figurines and just the grandiose display is extraordinary.
