This historic clock tower was constructed in 1886 and named after Sir William L. Merewether, Commissioner of Sindh (1867 to 1877). It has a height of 102 ft. and was designed in neo-Gothic style.

Now simply referred to as "Tower", it is located in the business hub at the junction of I.I. Chundrigar and Bunder roads, amid the melee of crowded pedestrians, buses and vehicular traffic.

The best time to see this architectural masterpiece is on Sunday when there is minimal traffic - although impressive, it is disconcerting to see how poorly the tower is being maintained.

Built on the junction of Bunder (Port) Road and Chundrigar Road, is a major landmark of Karachi. This used to be the last point in the city from where all traffic turned back. The Bunder Road is a one way traffic road and all public transport except for a few turn around this Tower. It was built as a clock tower facing all sides for the convenience of market goers, port operators, and general public. It is named after Mr. Merewether, the then Commissioner of Karachi. It is one of the many clock towers that were constructed in Karachi during the British era. It is a small structure built with local sandstone that has a unique and good architecture. it has a small park with few seats. It is a walk around place where memorable photos can be taken. Merewether Tower is a major reference point for many bazaars and wholesale markets of Karachi. Most importers have their main offices and godowns in this area. The Pakistan Railways goods godown is also located opposite the Tower and all goods transported upcountry have their origin here. Different lanes specialise in specific goods thereby making wholesale competitive merchandise available to retailers. There is no parking in the area due to heavy rush. Best time to visit is early morning before 10 AM to find parking and then one can roam around the markets that usually open after this hour.

Can view from outside, in a crowded area, with parking issues. Would love to see it thoroughly and in details one day.

Constructed in the memory of Sir William L. Merewether, who served as Commissioner of Sindh from 1867 to 1877, it was raised with public money by the Governor of Bombay, Sir James Fergusson who laid the foundation stone in 1884. It was constructed in 1886 and is located at the intersection of M.A. Jinnah Road and I.I. Chundrigar Road, near Kharadar. It was formally opened to the public in 1892 by the Commissioner of Sindh, Sir Evan James. The tower was designed by James Strachan, the Municipal Engineer,
The Tower stands on a base of 44 feet square and rises to a height of 102 feet. Strachan designed the tower in the Gothic Revival style popular in Victorian England, to evoke the architecture of Medieval England (11th to 15th century A.D.). The structure is built in buff-colored Gizri stone and shows a heightened sensitivity to detailing and emphasis on carving and decoration. The architecture takes the form of an Eleanor cross. Eleanor crosses were a series of 12 monuments erected in England by King Edward I between 1291 and 1294, in memory of his wife, Eleanor of Castile. Three of the original Eleanor Crosses still exist in England. The Star of David is also visible on its exterior. Many similar neo-Gothic style structures were built in Victorian England, and impressive clock towers are found all over Pakistan.
It is now maintained by sponsorships that presently rests with Standard Chartered Bank.

This is a very old landmark of Karachi. It is at the fork of I.I Chundrigar road and M.A. Jinnah road, top of the financial district. It is one if the few landmarks with the heritage status. Recently it has been adopted by Standard Chartered so place has been done up clean, lighted and grass neatly cut and maintained. Good to visit and take a few pictures.

Visited with my friends, an excellent place for those who love history. It is very easy to visit Merewether tower, just ask a bus conductor if it is going to tower and ride then ride off at tower stop. Or just ask taxi or rikshah to drop you at tower. The power and cable TV wires crossing around the clock tower is making its appears ugly, government should interfere and remove those wires from the face of the tower. The park around the tower should be maintained and open for the visitors with a charge of fee so that it did not become safe heaven for drug addicts.

It is an excellent place for the visitors and specially for the first time visitors. There are many restaurants in the surrounding where one can have tea, coffee, snacks or even lunch or dinner. Remember to bring your camera with you.
