Sham Trek is also called baby trek and is a nice short itinerary to try your fitness and an ideal walk to get adapted to the altitude. This trek goes through the Ladakh mountains and follow the villages that populate this area. This trek is open all year around and offer nice views of the near Zanskar mountains. Unlike other treks on the Zanskar side, this trek offers a different landscape because this area is drier and it has lower altitude. So expect desert like mountains and green oasis valleys dotted with houses and farms. This is a perfect trek for newbies because the trek walking hours oscillate between 4-6, and there is a wide range of accommodations from basic local houses to more fancy Homestays. This area is full of vegetables and apricot tree orchards, they practice organic farming so the food taste superb. There is no need of guides, the path is easy to follow and there are nice android apps who show clearly the tracks like Maps.me and Osmand, but if you are not an experienced trekker you can get one. I spend four days in the Sham Valley and it was a nice experience is not so wild like others treks but culturally and architecturally was far better because this is a rich agricultural area so houses, monasteries and countryside stone walls are being restored and beautified. Just to get an idea these are the main stretches of the trek:

- Day 1: Likir to Yangthang village.
Do not forget to visit the Likir Monastery, then walk to the Pobe La Pass (3630 m) and then go downwards to Yangthang, ask around for a Homestay and enjoy the views.

- Day 2: Yangthang to Hemis Shukpachan village
This is a short trek and you will need to cross the Sarmanchan La Pass (3750 m) to Hemis Shukpachan village.

- Day 3: Hemis Shukpachan to Temisgam village
This day has the steeper trails of the trek. You will need to cross the Mebtak La pass (3750m). Then downhill walk pass Ang village and end the day in the nice village of Temisgam.

- Day 4 (Optional): Temisgam to Skindiyang village
Most of the trekkers ends the walk in Temisgam but there are different ending choices: some people walk down to Khalsi, others pick a car and return to Leh and the boldest go to the beautiful village of Skindiyang (also known as Skining), look for this route in wikiloc if you are interested. This trek is a little bit more demanding than the last days because there is a 4.060m pass but the scenery is the best of all Sham Valley.

One thing worth mentioning is the fact that this area used to be drier with sparse vegetation, but in recent years the reforestation programs led by the Indian Department of Forestry have changed dramatically the landscape. The green valleys stand out over the blue sky and the yellowish arid mountains. So for the travellers the view has an unmistakable sense of mystical feeling. The sights of the harmonious green valleys gently guarded by a Lamasery remind us of a Shangri-La Himalayan utopia. But not everybody is happy with the reforestation efforts, some locals claims that the expansion in the forested area has increased the annual rainfall in recent years, so the local monasteries and houses made of mud have started to fall apart. Because of that the locals who have enough resources have resorted to concrete to build their houses.
