Shey Gompua was founded in 1655 and it's very famous for giant Copper with glided gold made seated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha. Visitors can get very stunning panoramic view of surrounding places of Ladakh. A must visiting place in Ladakh. The place is really a beautiful one .

If you have visited the leh palace and other famous monasteries then you can skip this place or get a glimpse of it from the base because you have to ascend a sloppy terrain to reach the structure.

During our vacation in Ladakh, we had visited this ancient palace cum monastery located on the Leh Manali highway. The palace is nothing much to talk about but we liked the royal temple which has a giant idol of Lord Buddha in sitting posture. The idol is such huge that we seeked the Lord's blessings first from the temple at a lower level and again from the main temple at a higher level. We came across a room where hundreds of small & large oil lamps were burning creating a divine sight. As expected we enjoyed clicking pics of the beautiful mountain landscape from the top. Also this place requires lots of climbing on steep stairs.

This happened to be the last point we touched on the last day of our four day stay in Ladakh and by the time we reached there, we were dead tired. Therefore, we recommend that this place should be visited in the first half of the day so that you reach the top and enjoy the scenic beauty of the surroundings. Monastery is part of this magnificent Palace structure. The fields in front of this place present a breathtaking view, it also has a large pond of fish, which are never fished out and are considered pious by locals.
Will surely visit this place again during my next visit to Ladakh in 2016!!!

This place is close to Leh City.
We visited it enroute to Hemis monastery.
The king, Shey, used to stay here.
You can see a big statue of Buddha and people offer anything from fruits to chocolates to juice.
Here once can see the Indus river and valley as well.

The Shey monastery has seen better days and could do with some better upkeep considering that it was one of the Royal families' Gompa. the climb uphill from the road - to be undertaken on foot - is quite steep. However, the views are worth it ! Astounding views of the mountains around Leh and the Indus valley unfold on both sides of the Shey palace. Do visit for the views alone enroute the Thiksey Monastery from Leh and also a few km before the "Rancho's school" of "3 Idiots" fame.
