Beautiful temple in the heart of old Bangalore. A visit will actually remind you of the essence of old traditional Bangalore. Place can get really crowded during festivals. However during other times it is relatively calm and quiet. This is a must visit for people who are interested in witnessing traditional side of this city.

People say it is 7000 years old. Official poster says it is 400 years old. The temple was found in 1997 only. Till then it was submerged under the soil and only upper part of Nandi was visible.While digging n the Idols of Nandi, Lord Shiva, Water tank with Turtles and fishes were found. Nandi is above Shiva. When the mouth of Bull was cleaned water started pouring uninterruptedly on Shiva. The source of water is still unknown. Both the nandi and shiva are facing south. Hence the temple is called Sri Dakshinamukhi Nandi Gurthu Kalyani Kshetra. Now people are believing that the water is having medicinal properties also.

Recently renovated this temple is oldest in the area and a good attraction. Shops are less in the vicinity.

One of the oldest temples in the country. The temple has some unique features like water continuously falling from Nandis mouth on the head of Lord Shiva. It is still a mystery as to the source of water. The temple's architecture is beautiful.

I visited this temple yesterday. For the locals in Malleshwaram this is just another temple. But for people who come beyond that neighborhood this is a surprise. Water keeps falls from the mouth of nandi onto a shiva lingam. From lingam to a pond in front of the lingam which has nice big fishes and turtles. There is no roof top above the pond so it's an open sky temple. You can just sit there for hours together if you are one of those spiritual guru's like me who go to temple mainly to introspect, elevate and detach yourself. If you are normal human trapped in the world of pooja, mangala aarthi, breaking coconut on your head, you can still go there and be satisfied. :-)
Water that is flowing out of Nadhi is most likely ground water. First of all, the location and placement of this temple is important. Malleshwaram is a small hill you will notice it when walking from sampige theatre to 17th cross - it goes up hill. This temple is in a pit. You have to go down a few steps at the main entrance - may be 8-9 steps. And the nandi if futher below, may be 1 feet from there. So overall nandi is placed ~7feet below ground level and I already told you the road is up hill. So it appears like the water is some natural spring water finding it's way through the ground and coming out of Nandi. Whoever made this temple had a great idea, vision and have done a great job.
Worth going there once.

A unique temple, one of its kind, unlike other temples. You sit around the small pond filled with fishes and turtles and experience the worship of the lingam. The Nandi is at a higher level and it bathes the lingam continuously. Pleasant ambience and open to the sky.

To know the rich cultural heritage of Bangalore you have to visit the older quarters of this historic city. In Malleswaram located in northwestern part of the city you will find a cluster of temples in the middle of the busy market selling many varieties of vegetables, flowers, banana leaves, fruits and whatnot. A complete change from the dusty, crowded multi-storied buildings of I.T. hub. Small houses with tiny windows in the narrow lanes will make you remember the olden times. It is the locality where many Tamil Brahmin families settled. So we feel a clear resemblance to that of a small colony in a town.
We saw a small entrance with the idol of a big Nandi on the top of the western entrance. As we entered we saw a small pond in the center within an enclosure. Nobody is allowed to wash their limbs there. We saw many black turtles and white fish in the crystal-clear water. A corridor with many pillars is seen at an elevated level around the pond. A stream of water flows from the mouth of a stone idol of south-facing Nandi perched on a higher level. Just below a Shiva Linga is seen over which water falls from a brass vessel hung over the idol. The stream of water from Nandi’s mouth flowing through a pipe and falling into the vessel over the Shiva Linga collects into the water tank (called Kalyani in Kannada).
The water from Kalyani is evacuated into the open well outside the temple. This water is considered very pure with herbal properties and is taken as holy teertham by devotees. Nobody knows the origin of this water flow. It might be a natural spring behind from where water is flowing through Nandi’s mouth. On the left side of Shiva Linga the shrine of Ganesh is seen and a Navagraha platform is found on the right side. Just behind Nandi’s idol the figures of Lord Shiva with Parvati, Ganesha and Subrahmanya are engraved on gold-coated brass panels. In many temples Nandi is seen at a lower level facing Shiva Linga. But here Nandi is seen above the Shiva Linga.
This temple is considered to be a part of the nearby Kadu Malleswara temple. According to Archeological Survey of India, this Nandi Teertha Kalyani temple was built in 17th century in Maratha style without any decorative designs. The Maratha king, Venkoji, stepbrother of Shivaji built this temple. The temple is below ground level and has no gopuram or tower. For many years it was buried under mud. In 1990’s when construction work was started, it was discovered by chance. No changes or additions were made to this temple except the western entrance with a huge idol of Nandi on the top of the arch. A beautiful garden with many shady trees adds charm to this historic temple. The temple timings are from 7.30 a.m. to 12.00 p.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 8.30 p.m. Many special poojas are held during Maha Shiva Rathri and during Kartik month.

This is a small temple located in the vicinity of Kadu Malleshwara temple in well-known Malleswaram area of Bangalore. Temple deity is Shiva in the form of Shiva Linga and a statue of Nandi kept above which are facing Dakshina meaning South direction. There is always water coming from Nandi’s mouth which is made to fall on Shiva Linga. No body knows the secret of this perennial water coming from Nandi.
There is also a water Pond (Kalyani in Kannada) in front of the deity and it’s inhabited by fishes and tortoises. There's calm and serenity at this place and was well maintained.

This is a small Shiva Temple in Malleshwaram, Bangalore. The temple has a Shiva Linga and a statue of Nandi, There is a water pool in the temple inhabited by fishes and tortoise. The temple was dug out from earth during an archeological excavation. Well maintained temple. Visited on Monday morning. Moderately crowded.

This temple is located in the Temple Layout of Malleshwaram. This temple was revealed during an archaeological excavation. One strange thing in this temple is that Shiva Linga is washed all the time with water flowing from Nandi's mouth. The temple has a small pool of water which is considered holy and is home to several fishes and tortoise.
